Is Damian Lillard leaving the NBA? Portland Trail Blazers star switches role amid injury setback
The
Portland Trail Blazers
announced on Saturday night that
NBA
icon Damian Lillard is going back to school. He will go back to Weber State, his alma mater, to become a general manager. After being released by the Milwaukee Bucks, he signed a three-year, $42 million deal with his native NBA club, the Portland Trail Blazers.
But now he will miss the entire 2025-2026 season after suffering an Achilles injury.
Hence, it is safe to say that it is just temporary and he is not leaving the NBA.
Damian Lillard returns to Weber State as General Manager while recovering from Achilles injury
While hosting the Weber State Basketball Alumni Classic in Ogden, Utah, on Saturday night,
Damian Lillard
made the announcement. Days after deciding to sign a three-year contract to rejoin his old team, the 13-year NBA veteran is now all set for his new job.
According to Brett Hein of the Standard-Examiner, he stated during a visit to the school's campus:
'My relationship with coach (Eric) Duft and this program means a lot to me, and seeing the success of the program means a lot to me… I feel like I can do a lot to help the program be successful, to help the players even individually continue to grow their careers past college, that's something that I'm passionate about.'
Before being chosen by Portland, he spent four years at Weber State in Utah. As a general manager, he will work hand-in-hand with the coaching staff and the administration to provide guidance, mentoring, and advice. He will also apply his experience to enhance the program.

Since 2016, the Weber State Wildcats have failed to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. Last season, they had a 12-22 record. Addressing the same, Damian Lillard said in a statement:
'I believe in what this program represents and the culture that continues to grow at Weber State.'
The announcement was made almost four months after he tore his Achilles tendon in a playoff game in April. In May, he had surgery to fix the damage, and he is still recovering from the same. He will probably miss a large amount of the 2025-2026 season due to the injury. Even though
NBA
players with Achilles tears typically take ten months to recover, there is some chance that he could return near the end of the season and be prepared for the playoffs.

Salaries of Bengaluru players, including Sunil Chhetri, suspended indefinitely; club issues statement amid ISL uncertainty
Sunil Chhetri (PTI Photo) In a dramatic and worrying development for Indian football, Indian Super League (ISL) side Bengaluru FC have announced the indefinite suspension of salaries for its first-team players and staff, including iconic striker and former national team captain Sunil Chhetri . The decision comes amid escalating uncertainty around the future of the ISL, which remains suspended following an unresolved standoff between Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) and the All India Football Federation (AIFF). Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Bengaluru FC took to social media on Monday to deliver the difficult news to fans and stakeholders, stating, 'In view of the uncertainty surrounding the future of the Indian Super League season, Bengaluru Football Club has taken what is a very difficult decision of indefinitely suspending the salaries of players and staff belonging to the First Team. Running and sustaining a football club in India has always been an uphill climb, one that we have put everything aside and made, season after season. ' The club emphasised the emotional toll the situation is taking on the team and their families, adding, 'However, the lack of clarity on the League's future leaves us with no choice but to take this step. The future and well-being of our players, staff, and their families is of utmost importance to us, and we are in touch with them as we wait for a resolution.' We urge the AIFF and FSDL to end this impasse swiftly. The uncertainty benefits no one, and a prompt resolution is vital for the future of Indian football. ' This move comes just two weeks after Sunil Chhetri himself raised concerns about the bleak outlook for Indian football. On July 16, he wrote on X: 'It began with worrying about how I am on borrowed time with what I have left in the tank. But speaking with players from across clubs, I've realised that my selfish problem isn't as important. 'Everybody in the Indian football ecosystem is worried, hurt, scared about the uncertainty we are faced with.' The AIFF is expected to meet with club CEOs soon in an attempt to find common ground and salvage what remains of the season. ‘It had to be Mohammed Siraj' – Ex-England skipper on India's fightback in Oval classic
Mohammed Siraj of India greets the crowd after being announced as the player of the match on day five of the 5th Rothesay Test Match at The Kia Oval on August 04, 2025 in London, England. (Photo by) Former England captain Nasser Hussain said it would have been a travesty if England had won the Test series 3-1 and added that Mohammed Siraj taking the final wicket was a fitting end to an exhilarating series. 'The final scoreline was well and truly deserved by India, and it was very fitting for Siraj to get the final wicket,' Hussain told Sky Cricket. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'It would have been a travesty had England won the series 3-1. India deserved to make it 2-2 for the amount of good cricket they've played in this series.' The tireless Mohammed Siraj's warrior spirit steered India to a series-levelling six-run victory over England in the fifth and final Test on Monday, bringing a fitting end to one of the most intensely fought and drama-filled contests in recent memory. With four wickets in hand and just 35 runs to get, England held the edge at the start of the final day. But the gladiator in Siraj made life miserable for the opposition batters from the very first ball. Shubman Gill and Mohammed Siraj press conference: India stars answer all questions In the end, his fiery effort—well supported by Prasidh Krishna at the other end—left England short by the narrowest of margins and allowed India to sign off with a 2-2 draw in the high-pressure five-match series. The decision to call off play early on Day 4, following a brief spell of rain, drew criticism from the likes of Stuart Broad and Michael Vaughan. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Quote Undo However, it seemed fitting that the decider extended into the final day, with both teams battling tooth and nail until the very end. With all five Tests going into the final day, Hussain also highlighted why the 'Big Three' — India, Australia, and England — must safeguard the future of Test cricket. But I'm afraid other countries don't have the luxuries that England, India, and Australia enjoy,' Hussain said. 'The crowds throughout the whole series were incredible — pretty much sold out every day. Even today, there was a sell-out crowd for just 40 minutes of play. 'Not every country has that privilege, so England, India, and Australia must keep an eye on the future of Test match cricket. If we let this go, we're doing the game a disservice. The passionate scenes reflected the relief and pride after what had been a rollercoaster Test series. Taking to social media after the win, Gambhir wrote on X: 'We'll win some, we'll lose some… but we'll NEVER surrender! Well done boys!' Poll Do you think Gautam Gambhir can lead India to more Test victories in the future? Definitely Maybe Unlikely It was a significant moment for the former opener, who had faced mounting pressure since taking over as head coach. After a rocky start to his red-ball coaching tenure, marked by a whitewash at home to New Zealand and a series defeat in Australia, this series marked a turning point. Leading a relatively inexperienced side under new captain Shubman Gill, Gambhir's team showed incredible resilience. After a loss at Headingley, they bounced back with a dominant win in Birmingham, fought hard in narrow defeats, and pulled off a gutsy draw in Manchester. But it was The Oval that brought it all together. England were cruising at 339/6, chasing 374, before India turned the match on its head. Siraj (5/104) and Prasidh Krishna (4/126) ripped through the final four wickets on the last morning.
