Mint06-06-2025
MINI India has introduced the all-electric Countryman E John Cooper Works (JCW) Pack, priced at ₹ 62 lakh (ex-showroom). Positioned at the top of the variant lineup, the new JCW Pack brings a sportier twist to the quirky EV, both inside and out. In a move to enhance exclusivity, MINI has limited the JCW Pack to just 20 units, which will be available exclusively online. Interested buyers can book the model by paying a token amount of ₹ 1.5 lakh, with deliveries set to commence from 10 June 2025.
Priced approximately ₹ 2 lakh above the top-spec 'Favoured' variant, the JCW Pack adds notable cosmetic enhancements. Buyers can choose between two distinctive paint finishes, Midnight Black and Legend Grey, the latter complemented by black racing stripes. A chequered pattern adorns the charging port and front bumper, nodding to MINI's motorsport heritage.
Additional design elements include blacked-out trim, pronounced side skirts, and striking 19-inch JCW alloy wheels in black. The iconic chequered flag motif also appears on the C-pillar, reinforcing the car's sporty persona.
Inside the cabin, the JCW Pack introduces John Cooper Works sport seats, a leather-wrapped JCW steering wheel, and red-accented dashboard details, all wrapped in a dynamic black and red colour scheme. The pack also includes a 'Boost Mode' for enhanced responsiveness. To match its aggressive looks, MINI has equipped the SUV with upgraded JCW Sport brakes, although no mechanical changes have been made under the hood.
The electric Countryman JCW Pack retains the same powertrain as the standard Countryman E. It houses a 66.45 kWh battery, powering a single electric motor that delivers 210 bhp and 250 Nm of torque. The SUV can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.6 seconds, with a top speed of 170 km/h. On a full charge, the vehicle offers a WLTP-certified range of 462 km, making it suitable for both city commutes and weekend getaways.
In terms of tech and comfort, the new variant comes packed with features such as a 9.4-inch OLED touchscreen, head-up display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Harman Kardon premium audio system, panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, wireless charging, and electrically adjustable front seats. The SUV also offers Level 2 ADAS and multiple airbags for added safety.

Microsoft launches a new AI model, Phi-4-mini-flash-reasoning, with 10 times faster responses

Microsoft has unveiled its newest AI model in the Phi family, Phi-mini-flash-reasoning. The Phi-4-mini-flash-reasoning is an open, small language model (SLM) designed to retain high reasoning efficiency for edge devices, mobile applications, and other resource-constrained environments. The SLM is a compact AI model engineered for fast, on-device logical reasoning. 'This new model follows Phi-4-mini but is built on a new hybrid architecture that achieves up to 10 times higher throughput and a 2 to 3 times average reduction in latency, enabling significantly faster inference without sacrificing reasoning performance. Ready to power real-world solutions that demand efficiency and flexibility,' said Microsoft. The new model is inspired by its family member Phi-4-mini but is made for better performance. Phi-4-mini-flash-reasoning is built on a new hybrid architecture that provides a throughput 10 times faster than its predecessor. It also reduced the average latency by two or three times, which enables a significantly faster inference without sacrificing the reasoning. The model is available on the NVIDIA API Catalog, Azure AI Foundry, and Hugging Face today. For organised, mathematically oriented reasoning tasks, the 3.8 billion parameter open model is optimised on high-quality synthetic data while maintaining support for a 64k token context length. In contrast to previous Phi models, Phi-4-mini-flash-reasoning presents a new 'decoder-hybrid-decoder' architecture called SambaY, which combines a revolutionary Gated Memory Unit (GMU), sliding window attention, and state-space models (Mamba) to improve long-context performance and decrease decoding complexity. Microsoft claims that this configuration enables the model to add costly attention layers with lightweight GMUs while maintaining linear prefill calculation time. As a result, inference efficiency is much increased, which makes it suitable for usage on a single GPU or in latency-sensitive applications like adaptive learning apps and real-time teaching tools. Microsoft shared that the SLM Phi-4-mini-flash-reasoning outperforms a model twice its size in tasks such as AIME24/25 and Math500 by providing a faster response time on the VLLM inference framework. With safety features including supervised fine-tuning (SFT), direct preference optimization (DPO), and reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF), the release is in line with Microsoft's larger campaign for ethical AI. The business points out that all Phi models adhere to its fundamental values of openness, confidentiality, and inclusivity.

BMW posts modest Q2 sales increase on growing demand in Europe, US resilience

German carmaker BMW reported a modest increase in second-quarter deliveries on Thursday, as growing demand in Europe offset a slump in China, with the U.S. market showing resilience. In the April-to-June period, deliveries of BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce vehicles increased by 0.4% year on year to 621,271 units, the company said. BMW & MINI sales rose by 10.1% in Europe and by 1.4% in the United States, while sales in China fell by 13.7% compared to the same quarter last year, the carmaker said. The U.S. market growth in the quarter is a signal of resilience, given the ongoing tariff pressures and economic uncertainties in the region, Pal Skirta, an analyst from Metzler Equities said. In contrast, peer Mercedes earlier reported a 14% sales drop for its cars unit in North America in the second quarter. German carmakers are pushing for a deal with President Donald Trump to replace a hefty 25% tariff on car and car part imports, from which BMW and Mercedes-Benz would benefit most as both companies operate large factories in the United States. The analyst also pointed to "the strong performance of the MINI brand, which recorded growth across all regions" and should help alleviate market concerns surrounding the agency sales model recently introduced in some markets.>
