Another Sixty60 driver dies in horrific head-on collision

A Checkers Sixty60 driver has tragically died after a head-on collision with a police van in Cape Town.
The accident marks the third recorded fatality this year from the delivery service, known for operating in any and all circumstances, within a one-hour timeframe.
According to the supermarket chain, drivers are outsourced to independent contractors who purchase their own motorcycles and uniforms.
In videos circulating on social media, a police van reportedly collided with a Checkers Sixty60 motorcycle, where a driver was fatally injured.
In the clip, the delivery driver was seen wedged under the front tyres of the double-cab vehicle.
The accident occurred on Voortrekker Road in Bellville on Monday 23, June.
Police have confirmed that the incident is under investigation. No other details of the incident have been made public.
This week's accident marks the third fatality of a Checkers Sixty60 driver this year.
In January, a driver died in a head-on collision with two vehicles in Camps Bay, Cape Town.
In May, another was tragically killed by a drunken driver in Bela Bela.
Later that month, two Sixty60 drivers collided, as seen in CCTV footage at an unknown location.
Earlier this month, a Sixty60 driver was captured on CCTV footage colliding with a car after speeding through an intersection in Durba.
A few days later, another driver was found unconscious at an accident scene in Heiderand, Mossel Bay.
This week another viral video revealed another Sixty60 motorcycle crash, which occured during rainy weather conditions, reportedly in the Western Cape.
According to the Shoprite Group, Checkers Sixty60 has a service guarantee in place to deliver 'no matter the weather.'
The group's Chief Strategy Officer, Neil Schreuder, said in a statement: ' In South Africa, this can be tricky at times given load shedding-related traffic congestion, rainy weather, and other challenges faced by drivers on the roads.'
According to BusinessTech , Checkers Sixty60 drivers are independent contractors who own motorbikes and purchase their uniforms.
The drivers are expected to deliver their orders within 60 minutes, failing which could result in alleged deductions.
Additionally, customers will receive free delivery if an order arrives more than 30 minutes after the estimated time of arrival and if the order contains less than 80% of a customer's first-choice products.

Trade Minister Parks Tau highlights the rise of 90 illegal online gambling in South Africa

The National Gambling Board has two personnel dealing with the challenges posed by the illegal gambling websites and R596 000 is allocated for the identification of illegal gambling websites. Image: Supplied Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau has disclosed that the National Gambling Board (NGB) has recorded at least 90 online gambling websites currently operating illegally in South Africa, all of which are registered and licensed overseas. 'The National Gambling Board did not engage with the operators of the illegal gambling websites, and operators did not block their illegal sites as the National Gambling Board did not engage with them,' he said. Tau revealed this when he was responding to parliamentary questions from Rise Mzansi MP Songezo Zibi, who enquired about the approaches used by the NGB to identify illegal gambling websites and the engagements undertaken by the board with South African network operators to block illegal online gambling websites in the past five financial years, among other things. In his written reply, Tau said the NGB has two personnel who dealt with the challenges posed by the illegal gambling websites. 'The National Gambling Board has allocated financial resources to the extent of R596 000 for the identification of illegal gambling websites. This includes travel costs and legal enforcement forum meetings to be held in the 2025/26 financial year period.' Tau also said the illegal gambling sites were identified by reliance on third-party information. 'When unlawful winnings are confiscated by third parties, the websites through which the illegal online gambling activity has occurred are mentioned in a prescribed National Gambling Board form. 'Other instances of identification of illegal online gambling websites include complaints received from the public via a dedicated NGB email address or the NGB fraud hotline.' Tau explained that the NGB engaged with various stakeholders who are responsible for the provision of the platform for the website to operate in South Africa when blocking illegal gambling websites. He stated that the NGB forwarded 10 websites to Google Africa for removal from the search engine in the financial year ending 2024/25. 'To date, none of the websites have been removed from the search engine, and (c) Yes, the NGB has engaged with Google SA,' Tau said. Meanwhile, Tau confirmed that the National Gambling Board was still without a board of directors. 'The process of selecting members to serve on the National Gambling Board is under way and has not yet been concluded,' he said in response to DA MP Toby Chance's inquiry. Eskom has GOOD news for South Africans scared of the dark

As the power system is operating reliably with reduced unplanned outages, Eskom says an additional 3 330 megawatts (MW) capacity is expected to return by Monday. According to Eskom, the power system is showing ongoing resilience in meeting the winter electricity demand. 'This sustained performance is largely due to ongoing structural improvements in the generation fleet. Since 15 May 2025, there has been no load shedding, with only 26 hours recorded between 1 April and 17 July 2025. 'With 44 days of Eskom's winter outlook period still remaining, the system remains well-positioned to maintain stability and meet demand effectively. 'When occasional system constraints arise, they are effectively managed through the strategic deployment of emergency reserves during morning and evening peak periods,' Eskom said. Remains within the budget From 1 April to 17 July 2025, diesel consumption was at 48.4% lower compared to the same period in the 2024 financial year and remains within the budget allocated for 1 April to 31 July 2025, helping maintain operational efficiency when needed. As of Friday, unplanned outages reduced to 10 846MW, while available generation capacity was at 31 818MW. 'During the week of 11 to 17 July 2025, planned maintenance averaged 4 467MW. Over the same period, the Energy Availability Factor (EAF) ranged between 60% and 65%, with the month-to-date average further increasing to 62.31%. 'To further strengthen grid stability, Eskom is planning to return a total of 3 330MW of generation capacity to service ahead of the evening peak on Monday, 21 July 2025, and throughout the coming week,' the power utility said. Between 1 April and 17 July 2025, the Unplanned Capability Loss Factor (UCLF), which indicates the percentage of generation capacity lost due to unexpected outages, stood at 29.53%. This is about 2.6% higher than the 26.95% recorded during the same period last year. As of Friday, the UCLF was at 23.35% reflecting improved performance. 'The open-cycle gas turbine (OCGT) load factor decreased this week, reaching 8.60%, down from the 11.92% recorded during the previous week (4 to 10 July 2025). This indicates less reliance on OCGTs. 'The Winter Outlook, published on 5 May 2025, covering the period ending 31 August 2025, remains valid. 'It indicates that load shedding will not be necessary if unplanned outages stay below 13 000MW. 'If outages rise to 15 000MW, load shedding would be limited to a maximum of 21 days out of 153 days and restricted to Stage 2,' the power utility explained. Cybersecurity firm warns of ‘costly epidemic' as ransomware cripples SA firms

Bloemfontein-based cybersecurity firm Tanosec has issued a warning to South African businesses amid a 'dramatic surge' in ransomware demands and payments. The firm says this underscores a growing national security crisis. Bloemfontein Courant reports that, according to the Sophos State of Ransomware in South Africa Report 2025, the median ransom demanded in South Africa has increased significantly – from R2.9m in 2024 to R17m in 2025 – while median payments have also tripled, reaching R8m. The Sophos report also indicates that 60% of ransomware attacks in South Africa result in data encryption, a number that surpasses the global average. 'The numbers are alarming and serve as a stark wake-up call for every business operating in South Africa,' says Lawrence Lackey of Tanosec. 'Ransomware is no longer a distant threat; it's a present and costly epidemic that can cripple operations, tarnish reputations and impose immense financial and emotional strain on organisations and their employees.' The firm adds that compromised credentials, exploited vulnerabilities and malicious emails are the primary entry points for these sophisticated attacks. Beyond the ransom fee, the cost of an attack can be drastic, with an average recovery bill of R23m, alongside significant operational disruptions and reputational damage. Tanosec explains that only half of South African companies manage to recover within a week of a ransomware attack, indicating widespread unpreparedness. 'While the ransomware landscape is challenging, businesses can significantly reduce their risk with the right strategies and a trusted cybersecurity partner,' adds Lackey. As businesses grapple with the rising tide of sophisticated cyber threats like ransomware, individual consumers are also increasingly vulnerable to highly organised fraudsters. Investigative journalist Irma Green recently shared her own startling experience of being duped by a banking scam, highlighting how convincing these criminals can be – even to a seasoned professional.
