In the first match of this series, India U-19 were truly dominant, chasing down a small score with 26 of their 50 overs to spare. While Vaibhav Suryavanshi took the headlines as he tore apart the English bowling to score 48 off just 19 deliveries, it was a victory built on the bowling effort. India managed to restrict the young England U-19 team to just 174 all-out, with only opener Isaac Mohammed and Andrew Flintoff's son Rocky Flintoff managing any scores of note. The younger Flintoff impressed with a patient 50, but had no partners sticking around at the other end: three Indian bowlers took two wickets each, while spinner Kanish Chouhan took three wickets to sweep through the England batting.
Suryavanshi has shown his devastating power and incredible bat swing at the senior level in the IPL already, and headlines this young Indian team, so it was no surprise to see him whack five sixes in the innings to get India going. The team's captain Ayush Mhatre somewhat missed out, having to play a quieter role than he did in the IPL as his opening partner went all-guns-blazing down at the other end: both batters will want to chance to bat longer in the second ODI, and show off what they really have up their sleeves. They are two of the most promising talents in Indian cricket, and even Indian fans will want to see more from them.
But beyond these relatively established names, it is a chance for young players on both sides to start earning a name for themselves and to show that they are truly the best of their age bracket when it comes to their respective countries: Thomas Rew captains his team, just as his older brother James captained the England Lions against India A, and will be seeking a bounce-back victory for him and his boys. But will India just have too much batting firepower? In a 50-over game, consistent cricket will be the key.

India's playing XI, particularly the pace attack, is set to experience changes for the second Test against England at Edgbaston. The major reason for this is that pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is all but out of contention for a spot in the XI, with the management seemingly deciding that this will be one of the Tests where he will be rested as part of workload management. However, a surprise candidate has reportedly emerged to replace Bumrah in India's playing XI for the second Test. As per multiple journalists present at Edgbaston, 28-year-old right-arm seamer Akash Deep is set to take Bumrah's spot in the playing XI. As per reports, Akash Deep featured heavily during India's training session on Monday, just two days ahead of the second Test, which starts on Wednesday, July 2. Alongside Akash Deep, pacers Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna, both of whom featured in the first Test, were also heavily involved in the practice. Left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh featured less, and is likely to miss out on the playing XI according to reports. Jasprit Bumrah was also taken aside for a long chat by head coach Gautam Gambhir, as per reports. Bumrah featured in the first Test at Headingley, taking the first five-wicket haul of the series. However, despite India's defeat, coach Gambhir has remained adamant about sticking to the workload management plan and playing Bumrah in no more than three Tests. However, adding some confusion to what the playing XI could be, journalists present at Edgbaston also revealed that Bumrah also marked his run-up and got some practice in. Akash Deep has played for India in seven Tests previously, last featuring in the Boxing Day Test between India and Australia in December 2024. He has taken 15 wickets in his Test career so far. On the other hand, Arshdeep is yet to make his Test debut. At the age of 26, Arshdeep is already India's leading wicket-taker in T20I cricket. However, he may have to wait for his chance in whites. Question marks were raised regarding India's bowling attack after the first Test, where India failed to take 10 wickets in the second innings, leading to England completing the second-highest successful run chase on English soil in Test cricket. Ben Duckett slammed 149 in the second innings as India faced the agony of becoming the first-ever team to lose a Test match despite having five centurions in the team.

As the vice-captain prepares to take on India in the second Test in Birmingham from Wednesday, TOI caught up with the 26-year-old who shared his thoughts on the victory, future plans and how watching AB de Villiers bat has made a difference to his approach. Excerpts: You guys have made 350-plus chases look like a habit. What is the thought process in the dressing room when such targets are given to you? In the Headingley Test, we were all very calm. We knew we were going to go out there and try and chase whatever they set us anyway. Getting six Indian wickets for 40 runs in the third innings probably calmed us down a little bit more, because there was a time when we were staring at a 500-run chase… We knew exactly what we were going to do. The way Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley started the innings was phenomenal. So is this calmness part and parcel of your mindset for such difficult chases. And do you guys believe even 450 plus can be chased — a sense of nothing is impossible? Everybody knows that we're going to try and chase whatever total they set us, So yes, who knows? 450 is a big total, but one thing is for sure, we'll give it a good crack. You survived trying an attacking shot at 0 in the first innings (off a no-ball). Tried a big shot again at 99 and got out. Even in the second innings, you were looking to be attacking in the first ball and got out. So, is it a habit of yours to hit on vulnerable moments, or such moments don't exist in your playbook? Well, I've had a little bit of reflection on it last week, I should have got a pair in that game. Obviously, I got out to Bumrah off a no-ball, so I'm pretty happy walking away with 99 and playing a critical role in that game. So yes, I just try and play the way I do. On 99, if you get a short ball, you're probably more likely to take it on than if you're on 0. I saw it as a scoring opportunity, and unfortunately, I top edged it straight to the man. India's XI Puzzle Ahead of 2nd Test | Jaiswal Shifted, Kuldeep or Bumrah? There is a lot of talk about you guys playing a refined version of Bazball . So, has there been a change in your approach in recent times? I don't think so too much, to be honest. I think we're just trying to play the way that we do. Obviously, you go about chasing slightly differently in different settings — maybe take a bit more time with the realization that you've got a lot longer time than you think. Having said that, we're still trying to play the way that we want to, just be more dominant and win more Test matches. The Fab Four of the last decade (Kohli, Root, Williamson, Smith) is on its way out, if not retired. You and Shubman Gill are the next two big things of international cricket across formats. So, is this kind of a Sinner-Alcaraz situation for cricket and how do you see this rivalry shaping? (Smiles) Oh, God, no, I hadn't even thought about that. He's obviously a very good player and hopefully I can play enough cricket for England to be playing against him plenty of times. Watching him last week, he's very good, plays the ball late and plays fast bowling very well. So hopefully we don't see too much of that for the rest of this series. But yes, I'm sure hopefully we'll play a lot of cricket against each other. There's a lot of talk about Jasprit Bumrah in this series. Is he the best that you have faced in your career? And do you think if he doesn't play, it will be a massive advantage for you? He's obviously a great bowler — releases it from a slightly awkward angle and has an amazing amount of skill as well. You just try and respect his good balls and attack his bad balls, really, like any other bowler. I think we had a good win with him playing last week. We're going to try and look to put all the bowlers under pressure; it doesn't matter who's bowling at us. But yes, if the team's missing the No. 1 Test bowler in the world, it could hopefully make a difference. Gautam Gambhir Smiles & Waves! | A Rare Moment Caught at Edgbaston Do you have a target for yourself going forward in the series? And do you have an idol, on whom you have modelled your game? Yes, I try to set little targets, But I don't like telling anybody about them. I like to try and keep them to myself. I've watched a lot of players growing up, try and put little parts of their game into mine. As a kid, I used to love AB de Villiers bat, watch him for hours and try and figure out what he's doing compared to other batters, which is making him so great. And obviously, there's Joe Root in the side. I have spent a lot of time with him, talking to him about the game, and just learning on the job, really. You'll take over from Root as England's No. 1 batter. If you can just explain your chemistry with him? Root and I play at the same domestic club, so we've spent a lot of time together. We're from the same county (Yorkshire) as well, so I played a decent amount with him before he even played for England. So, yes, we've got a good friendship, we speak a fair bit when we're around each other and spend a lot of time, whether that's in the nets or off the pitch or on the golf course. She said she has put her 'heart and soul' into SRH and is 'personally attached' to its results on the pitch, which the broadcasters' cameramen make sure to hound and capture. Kavya is the daughter of Sun Group chairman Kalanithi Maran. She became an internet sensation overnight in 2023 by leading SRH's charge in the IPL auction. Since then, she's been present at the ground for almost all of SRH's matches, and her reactions to moments on the field rapidly go viral on social media. 'Those are my raw emotions that you're seeing because my job has brought me to the point that I have to put myself out there," Kavya said in an interview with Fortune India. 'In Hyderabad, I can't do anything; I have to sit there. That's the only place I can sit. But even when I go to Ahmedabad or Chennai, and I'm sitting many feet away, somewhere in the box, the cameraman manages to find me. So, I understand how it becomes memes." 'When it comes to Sunrisers, I genuinely wear my heart on my sleeve. I think when you put your heart and soul into something, you naturally tend to get very personally attached to its successes and failures," she added. SRH have one IPL title to their name — 2016. They have had quite a roller coaster journey under Kavya's tutelage. In 2023, they finished last in the points table, despite building a solid team. In 2024, they went in the opposite direction, qualifying in second and reaching the final. This year, they ended mid-table, winning six of their 14 matches and being out of the playoff race quite early.
