"Another opportunity for China to take advantage": Former US NSA on Asim Munir promoted to Field Marshal
Speaking to ANI on Wednesday, Bolton highlighted the potential implications of the move, noting the continued hostility in the region that had hindered Pakistan's development.
He asserted for the US government's involvement in the matter, else it could exacerbate internal dissent in the country.
'I think it's potentially a disturbing sign. Obviously, internal dissent in Pakistan is repressed. Imran Khan remains in prison. I ultimately don't think this is in Pakistan's own interest. This is something the US government should press on them. The continued level of hostility here is just going to impede Pakistan's development, as it has for many years already,' Bolton said.
'But it worries me that it is another opportunity for the Chinese to take advantage of these developments that gives them additional leverage inside Pakistan,' he added.
Earlier, in a move widely viewed as an attempt to mask recent military and strategic failures, the Pakistani federal cabinet on Tuesday approved the promotion of Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir to Field Marshal.
The government cited his leadership during Operation Bunyanum Marsoos and the confrontation with India, labelled Marka-i-Haq, as grounds for the honour, Dawn reported.
Despite the military setbacks, Pakistan's government is projecting the outcome as a 'historic victory', praising General Munir's leadership during the conflict.
General Asim Munir became only the second army officer in Pakistan's history to be elevated to Field Marshal.
Ayub Khan, Pakistan's president from 1958 to 1969, holds the distinction of being the country's first Field Marshal.
Notably, his promotion to this highest military rank was self-appointed, following his coup and assuming the presidency in 1958.
A year later, in 1959, Khan awarded himself the Field Marshal rank, citing 'persistent requests' from Pakistani civil society members, just before his scheduled retirement from the army.
Munir's elevation also signals who truly calls the shots in Pakistan. The government approved a promotion that further cements the army chief's dominance over the country's civilian leadership.
Notably, even General Pervez Musharraf, despite holding absolute power for years, never assumed the title. The position of field marshal is symbolic but permanent, with no retirement, and held until death.
The promotion comes just weeks after India launched Operation Sindoor, a high-impact counter-terror operation in response to the deadly April 22 Pahalgam attack.
The operation exposed Pakistan's inability to shield its territory and airspace from precise Indian strikes, which destroyed critical infrastructure and eliminated dozens of terrorists. Despite this, Pakistan's top civilian and military leadership now projects the outcome as a 'historic victory.'
General Munir's promotion is seen as an attempt to bolster his position and mask Pakistan's recent military setbacks. (ANI)

'Despite the University of Michigan's history of downplaying its vulnerabilities to malign foreign influence, recent reports reveal that UM's research laboratories remain vulnerable to sabotage,' said Paul Moore, chief investigative counsel of the department. It singles out Ann Chih Lin, director of the university's Center for Chinese Studies, who has publicly said the threat of technology theft from China is overstated. 'Lin's apparent indifference to the national security concerns of the largest single source of funding for UM's annual research expenditures — the American taxpayer — is particularly unsettling,' Education Department officials wrote. Federal law requires universities to report all gifts and contracts from foreign sources totaling $250,000 or more. The law went mostly unenforced until Trump's first term, when the Education Department opened a dozen inquiries into universities accused of underreporting foreign money. The Biden administration closed most of those cases, but the effort has recently been renewed. Supreme Court (ANI) NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on Tuesday sought Uttar Pradesh government's response to a bunch of petitions challenging the state's directive to all eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route to display QR code, which on scanning would reveal their food licence or registration numbers, owners' names and menu. A bench of Justices M M Sundresh and N Kotiswar Singh needed no persuasion from a team of advocates representing petitioners - Apoorvanand Jha, Aakar Patel, NGO Association for Protection of Civil Liberties, Mahua Moitra and Mohammad Ahamad - to issue notice to the UP government and asked it to file its response by July 22, the next date of hearing. The UP govt's directive to eateries to paste QR code stickers, linked to Food Safety Connect App, is officially claimed to enable nearly four crore Kanwariyas to make an informed choice about the quality of food and hygiene. However, it was termed by petitioners as a revised version of the controversial 'nameplate diktat' issued last year by the state during the Kanwar yatra to discriminate against eateries owned by Muslims, which they said is per se unconstitutional. The petitioner said the SC had stayed the order mandating display of owners' names at eateries last year and pleaded that the apex court should stay this year's QR code directive as such vague orders give a handle to vigilante groups to unleash violence against eateries run by people belonging to the minority community.

This is the third day in a row that educational institutes in the national capital have received bomb threats. On Monday, three schools in Delhi, including Navy School in Chanakyapuri, CRPF School in Dwarka, and another in Rohini, received bomb threat via email. Delhi's St. Thomas School in Dwarka and St. Stephen's College of Delhi University received bomb threat emails on Tuesday as well. According to officials, a bomb threat received via email at St. Thomas School and Vasant Valley School in Delhi's Dwarka. The investigation is underway. Nothing suspicious has been found yet.
