DFI Retail Group posts 38.9% rise in H1 underlying profit
This comes even as half-year revenue inched down to US$4.39 billion from US$4.4 billion in the previous corresponding period.
DFI on Tuesday (Jul 22) attributed the profit growth to lower financing costs and an improved showing in its associates, as well as its healthy and beauty, and food segments.
After accounting for the divestment of Chinese supermarket operator Yonghui Superstores, which was completed in February, underlying profit of the group's associates was US$30 million, up from US$3 million in the year-ago period.
The increase was also due to higher contributions from both Maxim's and Robinsons Retail. The group's share of Maxim's and Robinson Retail's underlying profits grew to US$14 million and US$18 million, respectively.
Sales in DFI's health and beauty segment grew 4 per cent on the year to US$1.3 billion and profit grew 8 per cent to US$109 million on a like-for-like basis.

The bottom line of the group's food division grew 14 per cent on the year to US$24 million on a like-for-like basis. This was despite a marginal drop in its revenue to US$1.5 billion, excluding the impact of the divestment of the Hero Supermarket business in Indonesia last year.
Underlying earnings per share stood at US$0.0779 for the period, up from US$0.0562 a year ago.
'Our ongoing portfolio evolution enables us to prioritise capital on high-margin businesses and growth initiatives, while providing strategic flexibility for inorganic opportunities,' said the group.
In the first quarter, the group completed the divestment of its minority stakes in Yonghui Superstores and Robinsons Retail, generating total gross proceeds of about US$900 million.
The group is also selling its Singapore food business to Malaysian retail and investment conglomerate Macrovalue for about US$93 million.
As a result, the group has declared a special dividend of US$0.443 per share. This is on top of an interim dividend of US$0.035 per share, unchanged from the previous year. Both will be paid on Oct 15.
However, after including non-trading items, the group would have made a loss of US$37.6 million in H1 FY2025, as opposed to a profit of US$95.1 million in the year-ago period.
Loss per share would then be US$0.0279 in the recorded period, reversing from an earnings per share of US$0.0707.
DFI noted that it expects underlying profit to be between US$250 million and US$270 million in 2025.
'Despite a more cautious revenue outlook, the group expects to deliver stronger profitability through enhanced operational efficiency and disciplined cost management,' said DFI.
It also expects 0.5 to 1 per cent growth in revenue for the full year, reflecting broader economic uncertainty and a sharper-than-expected decline in cigarette sales.
Shares of DFI ended Tuesday 1 per cent or US$0.03 higher at US$3.16.

One of the Russian companies listed as receiving the compound - known as HMX or octogen - is the explosives manufacturer Promsintez, which an official at Ukraine's SBU security service said has ties to the country's military. The official said that Ukraine launched a drone attack in April against a Promsintez-owned factory. According to the Pentagon's Defence Technical Information Centre and related defence research programmes, HMX is widely used in missile and torpedo warheads, rocket motors, exploding projectiles and plastic-bonded explosives for advanced military systems. The US government has identified HMX as 'critical for Russia's war effort' and has warned financial institutions against facilitating any sales of the substance to Moscow. The HMX sale to Russian firms has not been previously reported. BEIJING - EU chief Ursula von der Leyen warned on July 24 that China's ties with Russia were now the 'determining' factor in its relations with the European Union, as she wrapped up a tense summit in Beijing that also saw China agree to speed up exports of rare earth minerals to the bloc. China's leadership has sought to draw the European Union closer as it positions itself as a more reliable partner than the United States and a bedrock of stability in a troubled world. But while nominally intended to celebrate 50 years of diplomatic ties, the EU has made clear there are deep divisions over trade, fears that cheap, subsidised Chinese goods could overwhelm European markets and Beijing's tacit support for Russia's war against Ukraine. Brussels says China's deepening political and economic relations with Moscow since the 2022 invasion have helped Russia's economy weather sweeping Western sanctions. Beijing denies that claim. Wrapping up that summit, Dr von der Leyen told a news conference in Beijing that the bloc had made clear that the issue was now the 'determining' factor in its relations with China. She and European Council President Antonio Costa expressed 'our expectations that China would follow up on our concerns and the expectation that it would use its influence to bring Russia to accept a ceasefire, to come to the negotiation table, enter peace talks and put an end to the bloodshed', Dr von der Leyen said. Climate agreement In rare agreement, China and the EU vowed to 'step up' efforts to address climate change. The warming planet is historically an area of convergence between Brussels and Beijing, with both willing to cooperate on combating climate change. Chinese and European leaders agreed on enhancing bilateral cooperation in energy transition and committed to accelerating global renewable energy deployment, a joint statement said. The EU also flagged its yawning trade deficit with China that stood at around US$360 billion (S$460 million) in 2024 and which Dr von der Leyen described as 'unsustainable'. Beijing dismissed those concerns, insisting that Brussels must 'rebalance its mentality', not its economic ties with China. Nvidia AI chips worth US$1 billion entered China despite US curbs: FT
[LONDON] Nvidia's advanced artificial intelligence chips worth at least US$1 billion were smuggled to China in the three months after Washington tightened chip export controls, the Financial Times reported on Thursday (Jul 24). The AI chip designer's high-end B200 processors, banned for sale in China, is widely available on a thriving Chinese black market for US chips, the report said, citing sales contracts, company filings and multiple people with direct knowledge of the deals. Nvidia told Reuters that building data centres with smuggled products is inefficient both technically and financially, as the company only offers service and support for authorised products. The US Department of Commerce, White House and Thai government did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Reuters could not independently verify the FT report. In May, multiple Chinese distributors started selling B200s to suppliers of data centres that serve Chinese AI groups, according to the report. The US and China are battling for global dominance in AI and other cutting-edge technologies, triggering a tightrope walk for companies such as Nvidia between the world's two largest economies.
