Jindal Steel bags 50-year mining lease for Roida-I block in Odisha

Jindal Steel on Friday said it has bagged a 50-year mining lease for the Roida-I iron ore and Manganese block located in Keonjhar district of Odisha.
The company has secured a letter of intent (LoI) from the Odisha government for the grant of the said mining lease, Jindal Steel said in a statement.
Spread across 104.84 hectares, this mineral resource significantly enhances Jindal Steel's raw material security and underscores the company's commitment to integrated and sustainable steel production in India's mineral-rich eastern corridor, the statement added.
"This mining lease is a critical enabler for our long-term vision of self-reliant steel production. With the Roida-I block, we are significantly bolstering our iron ore and manganese supply base, which will ensure operational stability, cost efficiency, and support our growth plans," Pankaj Malhan, Executive Director, Jindal Steel, said.
The Roida-I Iron Ore and Manganese Block comes with an environmental clearance capacity of 3 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MnTPA) and a mineral deposit of 126.05 Million Tonnes.
The LoI from the Odisha government follows Jindal Steel's successful participation in the e-auction held on June 6, 2025, where the company emerged as the Preferred Bidder, in line with the provisions of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957, and the Mineral (Auction) Rules, 2015.
The issuance of the LoI is a significant step toward securing long-term iron ore and manganese supplies, critical to Jindal Steel's integrated operations.
Jindal Steel, erstwhile Jindal Steel and Power, is one of India's leading business houses, with a significant presence in steel, mining, power and infrastructure.

Over 84,000 Indian gaming accounts leaked in 2024, says Kaspersky

Over 84,000 online gaming account user details were leaked in India in 2024, the global cybersecurity and digital privacy company Kaspersky on Tuesday said. Press Trust of India Vietnam Over 84,000 online gaming account user details were leaked in India in 2024, the global cybersecurity and digital privacy company Kaspersky on Tuesday said. The maximum number of leaks of gaming account user details was witnessed in Thailand, the minimum such instances were in Singapore in the Asia-Pacific (APAC)Region, it said. The APAC region has emerged as the global epicentre of gaming, with more than half of the world's gamers based here. Markets such as China, India, Japan, South Korea, and the rapidly growing economies of Southeast Asia contribute significantly to this dominance. According to Kaspersky, Thailand recorded 1,62,892 leaked cases, followed by the Philippines with 99,273, Vietnam 87,969, India 84,262, Indonesia 69,909, Malaysia 37,718, South Korea 37,097, China 18,786, Sri Lanka 10,877, and Singapore 4,262 leaked cases, the company said. The company further said that 11 million gaming account credentials were leaked last year. The region's rapid digital adoption, widespread mobile penetration, and youth-driven demand have fueled exponential growth across both casual and competitive gaming segments, it added. With nearly 1.8 billion players and growing, the gaming ecosystem in APAC is not only the largest by volume but also among the most influential in shaping global gaming trends and behaviours, the company said. "Thus, it does not come as a surprise that the region is fast-becoming a breeding ground for data-stealing cyber threats, the company said. Addressing an event here, Adrian Hia, the company's Managing Director for Asia Pacific, said that virus threats have gone up significantly over the last two decades from one new virus threat every hour to 4,67, 000 new virus threats every day in the year 2004. The company's global non-audited revenue was at USD 822 million in 2024. Kaspersky registered 11 per cent sales growth last year. Kisan credit card accounts in government banks decline marginally in FY25

The number of Kisan Credit Card (KCC) accounts in public sector banks declined marginally by 1.8 per cent year-on-year to 22.5 million in fiscal 2025, while the outstanding loan amount grew by a marginal 2.2 per cent growth to ₹ 41,300 crore during the period, a senior government official said on the condition of anonymity, reported Business Standard. The decline in active KCC accounts reflects multiple structural shifts in rural lending, the official said. 'Farmers' incomes have improved over the years, with many moving out of farming, while in some states they increasingly prefer co-operative banks, NBFCs, or input-linked credit cards like fertilizer cards, reducing drawdowns from PSBs.' 'Many KCCs from the aggressive drives of the 2000s remained dormant or underutilised, prompting us to rationalise non-operative accounts to clean up portfolios and cut compliance overheads as advised by RBI and the finance ministry,' the official said. Another senior official at a public-sector bank said that KCC saturation mapping, geo-tagging, and Aadhaar seeding have improved scrutiny, leading to the weeding out of duplicate and ineligible accounts. Some farmers have moved to PM-KISAN or the Agri Infrastructure Fund, while technology integration delays at branches, such as incomplete digital documents or portal mismatches, have slowed renewals. At the same time, several small-ticket NPAs, including those impacted by debt waivers, have been settled through one-time compromises, leading to the closure of several accounts. 'Yes, the number of new KCC accounts has declined. This is primarily due to saturation in many areas. Over the past few years, there was a significant push from the government, and banks actively worked towards ensuring maximum coverage. As a result, most eligible farmers already have access to KCC facilities now. However, KCC remains a key instrument for crop loans, and for many farmers, it continues to be the natural and preferred choice for meeting agricultural credit needs,' Ashok Chandra, MD & CEO of Punjab National Bank, wrote Business Standard. The KCC scheme, which was introduced in 1998, offers short-term crop loans to farmers engaged in agriculture and allied activities at a benchmark rate of 9 per cent. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in the Budget for FY26, increased the loan limit for farmers holding KCC to ₹ 5 lakh from ₹ 3 lakh. While making the announcement, the minister said KCCs facilitate short-term loans for 77 million farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers. 'To promote timely repayment of outstanding amounts in operative accounts of KCC, the farmers are provided 3 per cent prompt repayment incentives,' Pankaj Chaudhary, minister of state for finance, had said. Insurance claims not restricted to third party in motor accidents: SC

Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads The Supreme Court held that motor vehicle insurance policy holders can claim compensation and referred the issue of claims against injury or death to the policyholder themselves in a road accident to a larger bench, saying that such cases have contradict judgements in the SC, while hearing the compensation plea of a minor girl, who lost both her parents in a car accident while her father was driving, a bench of Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and K Vinod Chandran said section 163A of the Motor Vehicles Act could be invoked for such a claim, adding that it is a special provision which overrides not only all the provisions of the Act but also any other law in force for the time minor was provided with the compensation by the insurance company for the death of her mother but not for her father as he was himself the insured bench said: "... a claim under section 163A, as per the words employed in the provision, according to us covers every claim and is not restricted to a third party claim; without any requirement of establishing the negligence, if death or permanent disability is caused by reason of the motor accident. This would also take in the liability with respect to the death of an owner or a driver who stepped into the shoes of the owner, if the claim is made under section 163A dehors the statutory liability under section 147 or the contractual liability as reduced to writing in an insurance policy".The insurance company, however, had held that the petitioner, having succeeded to the estate of the owner of the vehicle who died in the accident cannot at the same time be the person who has the liability and is the recipient of the compensation."It would override the provisions under sections 147 & 149 along with the other provisions of the Act and the law regulating insurance as also the terms of the policy confining the claim with respect to an owner-driver to a fixed sum. This according to us is the intention of incorporating the non-obstante clause under Section 163A providing for no-fault liability claims , the compensation for which is restricted to the structured formula under the IInd Schedule. It is a beneficial piece of legislation brought in, keeping in mind the enhanced chances of an accident, resulting from the prevalence of vehicles in the overcrowded roads of today. It was a social security scheme, brought about considering the need for a more comprehensive scheme of 'no-fault' liability for reasons of the ever-increasing instances of motor vehicle accidents and the difficulty in proving rash and negligent driving," the bench said.(With TOI inputs)
