This is going to be Michael 2.0 – Van Gerwen ‘excited' to return in New York
The Dutchman, who will wear a new shirt at the Madison Square Garden event, has taken time away from the game to deal with his divorce from wife Daphne.
A post shared by Michael van Gerwen (@mvg180)
But he is ready to get back into action in an event he has won twice before.
'This is going to be a new Michael. Michael 2.0,' he said. 'I am really excited, everyone knows I have had very tough times, still going on, but I am dealing with it, living by the moment.
'I still love what I do. I play darts. We all need to understand one thing, there is only one thing I love more and that is my kids.
'I wouldn't be here if I wasn't here to win, I want to come here and put my head on something else, that is something that is really important.
'I also need to be realistic, I have never been in this situation, never had so many weeks of not playing competitive darts. My head says something else, my head says I have to smash it.'
Van Gerwen will be in a strong field that also includes Luke Littler, Luke Humphries and Gerwyn Price.
Humphries is yet to win this event but is desperate to add it to his collection.
'It's great to be back, it's such an iconic venue, I always look forward to this one most on the World Series,' the world number one said.
'This is the one all the players want to win, it is really special.

'For me to put my name on that trophy would mean a lot to me, so it's something I'm desperate to do.
'Hopefully I can tick another thing off the CV that I have always wanted to win.'
Nathan Aspinall is also playing and hinted he has a better chance of winning without his wife and the distraction of the bright lights of New York.
'It's great to come to America, normally my wife has been with me, but I'm on my own so it's a bit different to previous years,' Aspinall said.
'I think I'm going to be a bit more focused on the tournament itself than previous years, which hopefully means I can go and win it.'

Joe Rothwell excited to team up with Russell Martin again
The 30-year-old, who still had a year to run on his Cherries deal, has moved to Ibrox for an undisclosed fee and signed a three-year contract. Rothwell spent six months on loan under recently-appointed Gers manager Martin at Southampton in the 2023-24 campaign as they won promotion from the Championship via the play-offs. 💙 We are today delighted to announce the signing of Joe Rothwell from @afcbournemouth on a three-year deal. 👉 — Rangers Football Club (@RangersFC) July 2, 2025 'I am delighted to have the deal done and be here,' Rothwell told Gers' website. 'It is brilliant. The size of the club speaks for itself and as soon as the interest was there it was an immediate 'yes' from me. 'With Russell coming in too it made that decision a little bit easier because working with him in the past and I know what type of guy he is and how he wants to do things. That was an even bigger pull for me, but the club speaks for itself.' Rothwell did not get the chance to play in the Premier League under Martin as he instead joined Leeds on loan from Bournemouth last season, but he enjoyed more glory at the Elland Road club – whose chairman Paraag Marathe is also now Rangers' vice-chairman – by playing 39 matches in the Whites' surge to the Championship title. Martin believes the fact his latest signing arrives at Ibrox on the back of fruitful loan stints bodes well for his time in Scotland. 'He is a player who we thoroughly enjoyed working with during my time at Southampton,' said the manager. 'His leadership, professionalism and quality were a huge asset. He is joining on the back of two promotions so helps bring a real winning mentality to the group. We are excited for Joe to join up the squad, get to know his teammates, and help make the group stronger.' Rothwell, who played up to Under-20 level with England, came through the ranks at Manchester United before moving to Oxford in 2016. Russell Martin and Joe Rothwell worked together at Southampton (Victoria Jones/PA) He then spent four years with Blackburn from 2018 to 2022 before signing for Bournemouth, which preceded his back-to-back promotion-winning stints at Southampton and Leeds. Gers sporting director Kevin Thelwell added: 'We are thrilled to secure Joe's services as we continue to strengthen the squad this summer. 'He has a wealth of experience in the game having performed strongly over a number of years at various levels in England. Emmanuel Fernandez (right) has completed a move to Rangers (Bradley Collyer/PA) 'We believe he has the right temperament and quality as a player to be a strong addition to the squad and look forward to seeing his impact.' Rothwell became Rangers' third new addition this summer following the arrival of midfielder Lyall Cameron from Dundee and right-back Max Aarons on loan from Bournemouth. The trio were later joined by Peterborough defender Emmanuel Fernandez. The 23-year-old, who was a regular for the Posh in League One last term, agreed a four-year deal at Ibrox. 👊 Welcome to Rangers, Emmanuel Fernandez! — Rangers Football Club (@RangersFC) July 2, 2025 He said on the club's website: 'I am honoured, it is a huge club with a great fanbase and I think I can kickstart my career and have a good journey here. 'I was shocked when I heard about Rangers because it is such a big club but it was the place I wanted to be. 'I haven't played at this level, there will be a lot of life changes for me, but it is something I want to be part of and I can't wait to get started.'

Nani makes Viktor Gyokeres prediction amid Man Utd and Arsenal transfer talks
Nani has dismissed rumours that Viktor Gyokeres could go on strike at Sporting and expects the 'professional' forward to turn up for pre-season training if he is still on the club's books. Gyokeres' future has been the subject of intense speculation on the back of a magnificent second season with Sporting, in which he scored 54 goals in 52 games to help steer the the side to a domestic double. It's understood Arsenal and Manchester United have both held talks with Gyokeres' camp with a view to bringing the 27-year-old to the Premier League, though neither club has managed to strike a deal with Sporting at this stage. Gyokeres is thought to favour a switch to the Emirates and Arsenal's sporting director, Andrea Berta, met with Gyokeres' agent, Hasan Cetinkaya, to discuss a move for the prolific Swede last month. But the Gunners failed with an opening offer of £46.8m – plus £8.5m in add-ons – for Gyokeres and Sporting's president, Frederico Varandas, has accused Cetinkaya of 'making the situation worse' with his behaviour. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. While Gyokeres has a €100m (£85.1m) release clause in his contract in Lisbon, the attacker had been under the impression he could leave Sporting should the club receive an offer in the region of £59m. However, Varandas has flat-out denied the existence of a supposed gentleman's agreement with the striker's camp and this has left Gyokeres 'furious', according to some reports in Portugal. There have even been some suggestions that the former Coventry man could refuse to show up for pre-season training in order to force through a transfer to England. Asked if whether expects Gyokeres to turn up to training, ex-United and Sporting winger Nani said: 'I believe so, he is a professional. I believe he will show up. 'If he doesn't show up it's because he's going to another club.' Nani – who swapped Sporting for Old Trafford in 2007 – believes Gyokeres will continue to receive 'the right support', whether or not he moves on from the Portuguese champions this summer. 'He is a fantastic player, who has done a lot for Sporting and has several clubs interested in him,' the four-time Premier League winner added. 'He knows that there is a lot of interest and it is natural that there is some anxiety until he has his life sorted out. 'It starts to create that anxiety, but I am sure that, whether he stays or leaves, he will have the right support and will be satisfied.' Nani is confident Sporting will bring in sufficient cover for Gyokeres should the Sweden international up sticks and leave. He continued: 'If Gyokeres leaves, it was already planned and Sporting's management certainly have everything ready to replace him. 'Sporting had a very strong team with Gyokeres, but they also have other good players and will quickly bring in someone to compensate. 'I believe it will be another positive year for Sporting, in which they will play good football and win again.' While Nani remains hopeful that Gyokeres could continue his stay with Sporting, he insists he has no inside information on what is happening behind the scenes. 'If you ask me if I want him to stay, of course I do,' he explained. '€80 million is a lot of money, but I'm not the president of Sporting, I'm not the one who invested in Gyokeres and I don't know what's going on behind the scenes or what the plans were. 'Now, he's a great player and he's always worth whatever they give him. If they give him a little more, that's fair too.' For more stories like this, check our sport page.
