Lucknow: On the face of it,
Samajwadi Party
's new office in
Azamgarh
that was inaugurated by
Akhilesh Yadav
amid much fanfare on Thursday, is described as one in the series of offices that the party is setting up across the state and beyond.
But going by the plans that the party leadership has, the premises are sure to assume the dimensions of SP's Purvanchal headquarters by the time the 2027 assembly elections approaches.
To begin with, the idea to have a party office-cum-residence for SP chief in Azamgarh, has been in the offing for quite some time now.
The party chief had mooted the idea well before the 2022 state polls. No wonder, the first chunk of 38 biswa and 16 kadi land (approx 2.46 acre) was purchased from 11 farmers on Jan 22, 2021.
The land was purchased in the name of the party for around Rs 6.5 crore. While Rs 45.90 lakh were paid for the stamp papers, another Rs 6.5 lakh were paid as additional registration charges.
The need for a full-fledged party office in the region was felt soon after Akhilesh took over the reins of the party in 2017. This was because the SP chief was then handling Central UP affairs from Lucknow itself, while his Saifai residence served as the party's nucleus for West UP areas.

The Purvanchal belt which consists of 28 districts comprising 164 assembly seats had to be handled from Lucknow and the leadership was keen to keep its ears to the ground in the region.
The fact that Purvanchal played the 'make or break' link belt for the SP in terms of putting the numbers on board to form the government in 2017 (14 seats) and 2022 (53) only expedited the process of setting up a party office in the region.
The campus of the new SP office is located barely 3 km from the Azamgarh district headquarters and 7 km from the Manduri airstrip, thus making it easy for senior leaders to visit it at regular intervals.
If sources are to be believed, the SP chief will monitor party's 2027 election campaign in 168 assembly seats of Purvanchal area from the Azamgarh party office itself.
The structure of the party office when completed, promises to offer more than mere ornamental value. Apart from SP chief's office and cabins for his staff including personal assistant and likes, the office a visitor's room, waiting gallery, meeting hall and ante rooms for second rung leaders.
When complete, the facility will have a 2000-capacity auditorium as well where party workers will meet the top leaders. The infrastructure promises to be at par with the party headquarters in Lucknow if not better than that.
"SP office at Azamgarh also makes a political statement as well because it falls between two important power centres of the main political rival – the BJP. While Gorakhpur – the home district of chief minister Yogi Aditynath is situated in the North of Azamgarh, prime minister's parliamentary constituency of Varanasi falls in the South," said a senior SP leader.
The SP strategists are confident that the renewed focus on Azamgarh will help the party push its PDA pitch across the Purvanchal demography which includes Yadavs, Dalits and Other Backward Classes (OBCs) like Kurmis, Rajbhars and Kushwahas, coupled with Muslims. Brahmins and Thakurs are also present in large numbers in Purvanchal and not all of them have got their share of the pie in the BJP government and will vote for the SP in 2027 polls," said a senior party functionary.
It is no surprise then that Akhilesh had named the new party office in Azamgarh as 'PDA Bhawan'. In the 2024 Lok Sabha polls the PDA – comprising Pichhade (Backward classes), Dalit and Alpsankhyak (Minorities) – has sided with the SP in UP significantly contributing to put up as tally of 37 seats – party's best ever score in Parliament polls.
Choosing Azamgarh had an emotional element to it as well. In 2015, SP founder Mulayam Singh Yadav had said: "Agar Mainpuri mera dil hai to Azamgarh meri dharkan hai (If Mainpuri is my heart, Azamgarh is my heartbeat)."
Mulayam's emotions for Azamgarh were not unfounded. The district has been SP's stronghold in elections. In 2012 assembly polls SP bagged all 10 assembly seats in the district. In 2017 the party won 9 and in 2022 it again won all 10 again. The Azamgarh Lok Sabha constituency has so far sent 5 SP MPs to the Parliament including Mulayam Singh (2014), Akhilesh Yadav (2019) and sitting MP Dharmendra Yadav.

Bellad seeks electric buses under PM's e-Drive scheme to North Karnataka cities
Deputy leader of Opposition in the assembly Arvind Bellad (BJP) has written to Union Heavy Industries Minister HD Kumaraswamy urging him to allocate electric buses under the PM's e-Drive scheme to North Karnataka cities like Hubballi-Dharwad , Belagavi, Kalaburagi, Ballari and Vijayapura. While Bengaluru has rightly received 4,500 e-buses, other regions also deserve attention. These cities have growing transport needs, existing KSRTC infrastructure, and in some cases BRT systems—making them ready for an efficient e-bus rollout, Bellad, who represents Hubballi-Dharwad West in the assembly, has said in his letter. Such a move will reduce regional disparities, curb emissions, create local jobs, and boost the EV ecosystem in underserved areas. A more balanced approach to green mobility will ensure true inclusive development across Karnataka, the BJP leader has said. Kumaraswamy had, in May, announced that Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Surat cities will get 10,900 brand new electric buses under the PM's e-Drive Scheme over the next two years. The PM e-Drive initiative aims to deploy 14,028 electric buses with a total financial outlay of Rs 10,900 crore over a two-year period from April 2024 to March 2026. The scheme represents one of the world's largest national efforts to electrify public transport at scale.

Millet push, kiwi boost, dragon fruit drive: Uttarakhand's Dhami government reflects on 4 years of farm and horticulture gains
The Uttarakhand government has expanded focus on both traditional agriculture and high-value horticulture, introducing a series of initiatives aimed at increasing farmers' incomes and diversifying crop production across the state, under chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami's four year tenure. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Efforts to promote traditional crops have included the procurement of mandua (finger millet) under the National Food Security Mission since 2022. The state has integrated millets into the public distribution system, mid-day meals, and Anganwadi nutrition programs to boost both demand and nutritional access. In 2023, the State Millet Mission was launched to raise awareness, increase production, and improve procurement and storage infrastructure. The state government has significantly raised the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for mandua — from Rs 2,500 per quintal in 2021–22 to Rs 4,200 per quintal in 2024–25- marking a 68 per cent increase. In parallel, marketing initiatives such as open-market promotion and the House of Himalayas platform have been rolled out. The number of mandua collection centers has expanded from 23 in 2020–21 to 270 in 2024–25, with support from Multi-Purpose Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies and Farmer Producer Organizations. Further institutional support is being introduced through the Uttarakhand State Millets Policy 2025–26. The policy is structured in two phases: the first, running from 2025–26 to 2027–28, will cover 30,000 hectares across 24 development blocks; the second, from 2028–29 to 2030–31, will expand coverage to 40,000 hectares across 44 blocks. The policy applies to 11 districts, excluding Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar, and supports crops such as mandua, jhangora (barnyard millet), ramdana (amaranth), kauni, and china (foxtail millet). Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In the horticulture sector, the Uttarakhand Kiwi Policy was launched in April 2025 and will remain in effect until 2030–31. It offers 70 per cent state assistance for setting up kiwi orchards at a cost of Rs 12 lakh per acre, with beneficiaries covering the remaining 30 per cent. The policy is applicable in 11 districts and has a total project outlay of Rs 894 crore. A separate scheme for dragon fruit cultivation was also launched in April 2025 under the Chief Minister's State Agriculture Development Program. The initiative, running through 2027–28, targets seven districts-Udham Singh Nagar, Haridwar, Nainital, Bageshwar, Pauri, Dehradun, and Tehri. It offers 80 per cent state support on an estimated cost of Rs 8 lakh per acre, with the remaining cost borne by farmers. The scheme focuses on promoting cultivation through modern and scientific methods. 'Our government is committed to boosting traditional agriculture as well as horticulture to increase farmers' incomes. We are providing everything from modern seeds to advanced technologies. A prosperous Uttarakhand requires prosperous farmers,' said CM Dhami.

Punjab: Mann govt to pass law against sacrilege in assembly session
Chandigarh (Punjab) [India], July 5 (ANI): The Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government on Saturday decided to introduce and pass a law against sacrilege during a special session of the state legislative assembly scheduled for July 10 and 11. This move marks a major step toward fulfilling a long-standing demand of the people of Punjab for stricter laws to address sacrilege cases in the state. The announcement came from the state government, describing the upcoming assembly session as 'historic for Punjab.' Officials confirmed that the government will present a new legislation aimed at curbing acts of sacrilege and ensuring strict punishment for those involved in hurting religious sentiments. The official added that the Mann government will fulfil the demand of the people of Punjab. Meanwhile, Bhagwant Mann, along with Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal, on Tuesday announced the launch of the 'Fast Track Punjab Portal'. The portal aims to simplify the process of starting new businesses, setting up projects, and expanding industries in the state. Addressing a gathering in Mohali, Kejriwal said the initiative is unprecedented in India and reflects his government's distinct policy approach, which is different from the prevailing national politics. 'When Bhagwant Mann and I visited Punjab, we met traders and received their proposals. After listening and understanding their concerns, we made this decision. We want traders who left Punjab to return and work here. Our intent is clear, and that's why we are making this announcement. Our government's policy is entirely different from the current politics of the country,' Kejriwal said. He stressed the need for a business-friendly environment in which industrialists can focus 90 per cent of their time on business growth rather than running around government offices. Describing the portal as a historic step, Kejriwal said, 'No government in any state has made such announcements until today. Starting a new business, setting up a project, or expanding an industry in Punjab has now become extremely easy. Just apply on the Invest Punjab Portal, and all approvals will be granted within 45 days. For projects up to Rs. 125 crore, approvals will be given in just three days. No running around, no delays, no corruption. Punjab is ready for your industry's new journey.' (ANI)
