What Is E85 Gas, And Is Fuel Economy The Only Downside?
Flex fuel has been available to greater or lesser degrees since the 90s, and during that time it's been fodder for countless arguments, studies, and forums flame wars. Questions about E85's effectiveness, efficiency, and whether or not it's just a handout for corn farmers have been hashed out over and over again. It's largely settled science at this point, however. E85, like anything else, has its pros and cons, and whether the cons outweigh the pros is entirely up to the end user.

E85's pros and cons are pretty well-trodden ground these days.
On the plus side, E85 is renewable, sustainable, and burns cleaner than straight gasoline which reduces a vehicle's greenhouse gas emissions. It also typically costs less per gallon than regular unleaded, but that can vary by availability. In addition, an engine running E85 is pretty resistant to spark knock as flex fuel typically has an octane rating over 100. Also, the amount of sheer energy flex fuel packs shouldn't be overlooked, and flex fuel vehicles tend to produce more torque and horsepower when running E85 than they do on regular unleaded.
Now, of course, there are some downsides to mixing all this corn into your gasoline. For starters while flex fuel produces more power and torque, it's less efficient than gasoline and running it reduces a vehicle's fuel economy — you'll always go fewer miles on E85 than you would on an equivalent amount of gasoline. High concentrations of ethanol in fuel can also make a car hard to start, especially in cold weather. In fact, the amount of ethanol in E85 is often reduced in winter months to help deal with this issue. Finally, there are some places E85 just isn't available. Sure, you can run regular fuel in a flex fuel vehicle, but you paid all that money for flex fuel capabilities so why would you?
To run E85, a vehicle either needs to be built to run it or it must have undergone a conversion to use it. The golden age of American flex fuel vehicles ran from around the mid-aughts to the late teens, when it seemed like every brand had at least one or two models that ran E85. Currently, however, there are six MY2025 flex fuel vehicles sold in North America and they're all GM products — the Buick Encore GX, Buick Envista, the 4x4 Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra twins, Chevy Trailblazer, and the Chevy Trax. If you add leftover MY2024 models to that list it bumps the number all the way up to 11 with the addition of the 2024 Silverado/Sierra RWD trucks and one lone Ford, the 2024 Explorer FFV AWD.
You can usually tell a flex fuel vehicle because it will feature obvious exterior badging stating proudly that the vehicle can, in fact, use E85. In addition, many flex fuel capable vehicles have a yellow fuel cap to match the yellow rubber sheathes on E85 pumps (like diesel cars and trucks have green gas caps). If your vehicle has neither badges nor a yellow fuel cap, your owner's manual should be able to tell you if you can safely run E85. Finally, if all else fails, you should be able to find the information on your vehicle's preferred fuel on any number of internet forums, on Reddit, or at the manufacturer's website.
If you have a non-E85 vehicle and you're still intent on running corn juice in your car, you'll have to make some changes under the hood. If your car was built after 1995 and is fuel injected, you can usually get away with a couple of simple control modules and a fuel sensor to make it flex fuel capable. Depending on your vehicle, you may need to install new injectors as well. Companies like eFlexFuel sell full kits that make converting your car to run E85 relatively simple if you have at least some basic mechanical skills.
If your car is older and/or has a carburetor, you're going to need to do more work to convert it. Depending on your vehicle, you may have to switch out the fuel pump, tank, injectors, and any steel or rubber fuel lines due to the corrosive nature of ethanol. If your car is particularly cool and still runs a carburetor, you'll likely need to remove the stock unit and replace it with a carburetor capable of using E85 without all the little rubber seals and diaphragms and gaskets inside melting away. Converting an older car to E85 is, as you can see, more involved and potentially more expensive. Whether it's worth it is up to you.

The latest car news, reviews, and features. Automakers continue to go all-in on advanced driver assistance systems. The question is: Do people actually want them? A recent study from research firm AutoPacific confirms that, yup, features like hands-off highway driving aids are the most desired among surveyed folks who intend to buy a new vehicle soon. Those systems, which include GM's Super Cruise and Ford's BlueCruise, are on the 'want' list for 43% of people who plan to buy a vehicle in the next three years. In 2024, automated driving features ranked far lower, with just over 20% of those surveyed seeking out hands-free driving. And just to be clear, these people specifically want systems where driver attention is still required; totally autonomous cars are further down the list, with a still-impressive 38% of people wanting a car with no steering wheel. AutoPacific This jump in popularity correlates with an increase in trust of automated driving features. Sixty percent of people said they would feel comfortable with their cars handling certain driving tasks, like staying in their lane or parallel parking, while 56% trust their cars' safety systems to prevent accidents on their own. Notably, 48% say they want their vehicle to drive itself so they can do something else, like read, or watch movies, or knit, or scroll some more. Now, this is where I interject to say that AutoPacific is not just surveying enthusiasts. People who actually enjoy driving are a lot less likely to say they'd rather trawl Pinterest than handle the steering wheel. But this seems to be reflective of the greater general population. It made the drive between Louisville, Kentucky, and Columbus, Indiana, a breeze as it handled nearly everything on its own. Lane changes were hands-free, it didn't wander around in its lane, and aside from yelling at me to pay attention to the road when I was locked in on the highway ahead, it was largely glitch-free. I can understand why people want it, for sure. It makes the mundane daily drive a lot less repetitive. I just don't trust people to use it responsibly, as drivers have been trying to game these systems—and, in some cases, succeeding—since they first hit the road. While Chevrolet Corvette hybrids are now a thing, it could still be a while before an all-electric Corvette enters production. But General Motors is tasking its designers to imagine what a future Corvette EV could look like. Unveiled this week, the California Corvette concept is the second of three 'Vette design studies debuting this year, each from a GM studio in a different region. The first, revealed in March, came from the automaker's U.K. studio while this one, as the name implies, is the product of GM's Advanced Design studios in Pasadena, California. Recommended Videos Borrowing the internal codename of another concept car that eventually morphed into 1992's Corvette Stingray III concept, the California Corvette of 2025 leverages the packaging flexibility of electric powertrains to improve performance. Its carbon-fiber tub chassis incorporates a T-shaped battery pack with prismatic cells (the same form factor used in current GM EVs), which leaves room for large underbody tunnels that channel air more efficiently around the vehicle. Tunnels like these have been used in race cars — mostly notably the AAR/Toyota Eagle Mk III — to generate downforce that presses the car into the track surface for better grip without generating the aerodynamic drag associated with more conventional downforce-generating like spoilers that sit on the surface of the bodywork. Minimizing drag is crucial to maximizing EV range, so a design like this could offer the best of both worlds for a future electric sports car. The California Corvette is just a design exercise, but GM did say in 2022 that an all-electric Corvette, based on the current-generation C8 model, was in development. When we'll finally see it — and whether it will look anything like the California Corvette or the other two concepts GM is trotting out — remains to be seen. Faraday Future's new face Few EV startups have been embroiled in as much drama as Faraday Future, which spent nearly a decade trying to get its FF91 electric SUV into a production, a process that saw it abandon a planned Nevada factory project for a repurposed tire plant in California while suffering a constant stream of financial calamities. Having finally launched low-volume production of the FF91, Faraday Future this week unveiled a bizarre follow-up. It's called the Faraday FX Super One, and it's an electric minivan pitched as a rival to the Cadillac Escalade, with high-tech AI features. In actuality, it's a Chinese-market Great Wall Motors Wey Gaoshan with a screen attached to the front. Faraday Future calls that 'Super EAI F.A.C.E. (Front AI Communication Ecosystem) System,' and claims it will allow the vehicle to 'communicate' with the world as a representative of its driver. How that will work, and what benefit it might have, is unclear. On the more practical side, Faraday Future said the FX Super One will be available in six-, seven-, or more luxurious four-seat configurations. The latter will feature suspended zero-gravity seats with heating, ventilation, and 10-way massage. Faraday isn't the only automaker thinking along these lines; earlier this year Mercedes-Benz unveiled its Vision V concept, previewing a luxurious van expected to debut within the next year or so. Solid-state batteries still in the news Two announcements this week indicated incremental progress in bringing solid-state batteries to production EVs. Solid-state batteries get their name from their solid electrolyte, which a host of startups and automakers have said will result greater range without increasing battery-pack size. But commercialization has proceeded slowly. Volkswagen has been collaborating with solid-state battery developer QuantumScape since 2012, and last year its PowerCo battery division inked a deal with QuantumScape for enough batteries to power up to one million EVs annually. This week the two corporate entities announced an expansion of that agreement that will see PowerCo become actively involved in pilot production of solid-state batteries earlier. QuantumScape says this will help it scale manufacturing more quickly. Meanwhile, fellow German automaker Mercedes-Benz expects to bring an EV powered by solid-state batteries to production 'before the end of the decade,' Markus Schafer, the automaker's head of development, said in an interview with Automobilwoche. Mercedes has also partnered with a startup — Factorial — but has also begun public testing of an EQS sedan with prototype solid-state batteries.
