Greece heatwave closes the Acropolis temporarily

BBC News08-07-2025
The Acropolis closed temporarily on Tuesday as soaring temperatures continue to grip Greece. The popular site in the capital city of Athens was shutting from 13:00-17:00 local time (10:00-14:00 GMT), the country's culture ministry said.Highs of 42C (107F) are forecast for parts of the European country on Tuesday and a category four wildfire warning, signalling a very high risk, is in place in several regions. It comes as wildfires were reported in other parts of the continent, including France and Spain's Catalonia region, weeks after they were hit by a deadly early summer heatwave.
Changes to the Acropolis' opening hours were announced on Monday after extreme heat returned to Greece on Sunday. Its closure on Tuesday - with highs of 38C expected in the city - is not the first time extreme heat has shut the popular attraction - having done so in June and last July.Authorities said the closure was for the "the safety of workers and visitors" at the site, which is visited by tens of thousands of people every day, totalling 4.5m in 2024.The country's labour ministry has also imposed a mandatory five-hour work stoppage for manual, outdoor workers between 12:00-17:00 on Tuesday in the areas set to see the worst heat. The current heatwave is due to continue into Wednesday, with forecasts of 40-42C for southern parts of the country, before starting to break on Thursday.Meanwhile, 41 wildfires broke out across Greece on Monday, according to the country's fire service. Of those, 34 were contained early while seven remained active into Monday evening.A Category 4 wildfire warning was issued late on Monday for five regions: Attica, the Peloponnese, central Greece, Thessaly and western Greece. The public was urged to remain vigilant and emergency services were on high alert, the country's civil protection said.Elsewhere, more than 1,000 fire fighters were tackling a wildfire in southwestern France early on Tuesday. Residents near the town of Narbonne evacuated their homes, and a motorway linking France and Spain was shut.In Catalonia, more than 2,000 people were under lockdown early on Tuesday as a wildfire that broke out on Sunday continued to rage in the eastern province of Tarragona, according to local media.Much of western and southern Europe was hit by a scorching early summer heatwave, which saw thousands evacuated, and homes and business destroyed.Heatwaves are becoming more common due to human-caused climate change, according to the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. It has said hot weather will happen more often - and become even more intense - as the planet continues to warm.

Molly-Mae Hague complains about £86k motorhome holiday that left her 'having a breakdown' - after her sister Zoe's Bali trip fiasco

Molly-Mae Hague has shared her candid complaints about a recent £86,000 motorhome holiday her family went on - after Tommy Fury said their daughter Bambi shouldn't be spoilt with five star trips. The influencer and businesswoman, 26, recently went on a family trip with Tommy and their two-year-old the Isle of Man. But in her latest YouTube vlog Molly-Mae opened up about some of the more difficult parts of the holiday including navigating travel delays with a toddler. It comes after Molly-Mae's sister Zoe was recently mocked by fans for leaving Bali after just 48 hours because it didn't live up to her expectations. Molly-Mae's trip comes after last month Tommy, also 26, insisted that Bambi shouldn't be 'spoilt' with 'five star hotels and business class flights' when they go away on family holidays - and so decided to buy a motorhome for more wholesome trips. The boxer ended up purchasing a swanky Elddis Avalon 255 which retails at £86,995. But Molly-Mae documented the trip in her video as she explained: 'Tommy has bought a motorhome and we spent our first weekend in the motorhome this weekend. 'Obviously, being us, we went in feet first and decided to go to the Isle of Man. 'Tommy's family were spending the weekend in the Isle of Man. I was feeling spontaneous so we literally booked the ferry to the Isle of Man an hour before we needed to leave. 'We'd never used the motorhome before, we needed to pack it up, sort Bambi, I just had this wave of 'you only live once, have a bit of fun'. 'Bambi doesn't need to be so perfectly routine every day, she's not a newborn anymore. 'I've got so stuck in my ways with the fact that her routine is her routine and I don't really steer away from it. 'I'm not gonna feel bad for that because that is what works for me and that is what works for Bambi and Tommy, so that's fine.' She then added of when things started to go wrong: 'So anyway, booked the ferry, packed the motorhome up and nearly didn't make the ferry but that's another story and then there was a two hour delay. 'This ferry, which was already gonna get us in at 11:30pm, which was already severely triggering me because Bambi goes to bed at 7pm, was not fine. It was giving me a prime example as to why the routine works for us. 'It was one of those moments where strangers come up to you and are like 'can I help? Is there anything I can do?' 'She was screaming that much for four hours straight. 'The boat basically had a malfunction and it wouldn't move for like two hours so we had a huge delay. 'She was so, so, so overtired and overstimulated - Bambi is so routine, she is the opposite of flexible.' And when they arrived things continued to go downhill, as she said: 'We managed to get to the Isle of Man at 1:30am in the morning. 'We didn't know where we were, what we were doing, we were going to a different campsite to Tommy's family. It was just a lot. 'We had to make our bed out of this sofa, I was like 'I'm really out of my depth, I'm struggling'. 'The next day, Bambi was so tired, she was just screaming, literally screaming, so, so unhappy. 'Me and Tommy were looking at each other like 'what were we thinking?. I was having a breakdown.' She went on in the vlog: 'Bear in mind this motorhome of Tommy's is his pride and joy, he's obsessed with it…I kid you not, the next day he was like 'I'm selling it, the minute we get home I'm putting it up for sale, I hate this motorhome.' 'It wasn't even the motorhome's fault. For our first time, stupid move.' They even considered getting an early ferry home but once they met up with Tyson Fury and his wife Paris, things improved. She said: 'We were actually going to get on a ferry that day to come home because we were so out of our depth, we couldn't do it. 'But then, when we met up with them, we were like 'no, we're gonna stick it out, we can do this.' Last month Tommy reflected on some of their lavish trips away saying he recently bought the campervan so they can have more 'normal' holidays. Speaking to Eddie Hall on his podcast, The Good, The Bad & The Beast, Tommy said: 'Having a daughter, Bambi, is everything in my life. She's what I work for. She's what I fight for. 'I don't even buy anything for myself anymore. It's all going away. Today's world is tough because you don't wanna spoil your children, but then it's hard to not, in a way. 'I've just bought – and it's coming in two weeks – a massive RV type thing. I just said to myself, 'She can't take business class flights every time, that ain't the real world.' 'I didn't go on a plane until I was 17! It was a Flybe flight and the propeller nearly broke. But Bambi's got more air miles than me now, and she's two and a half.' He added: 'I want her to know the meaning of normal, which is, you know, a nice camping holiday, driving to the lake. 'Not staying in five star hotels, not going business class flights, not doing that sometimes - and that's okay. 'Yeah, so I think she's getting to an age now where she's understanding more, and that as a father I introduce them sort of holidays, it's very important.' Molly-Mae's latest vlog also comes after her sister Zoe came under fire for complaining about a recent trip too. Molly-Mae's influencer sister was recently mocked by fans for leaving Bali after just 48 hours because it didn't live up to her expectations. Instead she and her husband Danny made a last minute decision to fly to Dubai instead after Zoe, 28, took to social media to admit 'something wasn't quite right'. The fitness influencer had planned the trip to Indonesia with her husband Danny to celebrate their first wedding anniversary. And despite staying in a huge sea view room at the Radisson Blu, a five-star hotel, they decided to leave early and jet to Dubai instead. Zoe explained that Bali looks better on social media than in real life, as influencers make it look luxurious, despite it being a developing country. In a YouTube video, Zoe told the camera: 'Since landing in Bali, something for us wasn't quite right. The fitness influencer had planned the trip to Indonesia with her husband Danny to celebrate their first wedding anniversary 'We came here with high expectations because we had seen on social media that everyone was having such a lovely time. Lovely places to eat and beaches, and lovely gyms and coffee shops. 'But I don't think the reality of Bali is shown much at all, and I do think it is down to a lot of influencers posting the more luxury side of things.' She added: 'Before joining the army, I spent five months travelling South East Asia. I did Thailand, Vietnam, China, Hong Kong, I did a lot and spent time in these countries. But there is something very different about Bali. 'We got told Uluwatu where we are now is one of the best places to go, so if this is one of the better places, I'm not sure where the other places are like. 'I wasn't going to sit down and say anything, but people want to know.' Danny then joined the video and said: 'You either go on holiday to travel and experience culture or you want to go away and relax.' Zoe continued: 'Yeah, and we could have got a flight tomorrow as today is our anniversary, but time is precious and we just want to get out, and why delay it. 'We missed the mark, maybe we didn't do our own research, maybe it is our own fault. I did a lot of research though. 'I think it is just personal preference, and our preference was that this isn't for us, and we are making the executive decision to go enjoy our anniversary somewhere we know that we love and can relax and can drink the water.' Fans were divided in the comment section, with many claiming they loved Bali and asking for specific reasons why she didn't like it. 'I find this really surprising seeing as you travelled this part of the world. Everywhere there is like this - the 5* resorts are social media worthy but ultimately it's a developing area of the world and lots of the people there live in poverty.'; 'That is such a shame you didn't have a good experience:( Bali is a truly magical place with incredible people! But it is a poor country and I think people forget that and expect it to be like Dubai when that isn't the reality. Hope you have a good time in Dubai.'; 'I'm interested to know what exactly you didn't like about it? You didn't really go into specifics? I travelled there last year and loved it!'; Others agreed with Zoe, adding: I'm just home from backpacking Australia, Bali, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore and I can hands down agree with the insta vs reality with Bali!! We tried to enjoy it as much as we could but it is 100% portrayed sooo differently by influencers,' And despite staying in a huge sea view room at the Radisson Blu, a five-star hotel, they decided to leave early and jet to Dubai instead 'Why is everyone hating? Bali isn't for everyone, they arrived and didn't like it? Why would they waste time & money somewhere they're not enjoying?' In 2019, Zoe's sister Molly-Mae shared with fans that she 'fell in love with Bali' as she shared a series of stunning snaps to Instagram. Zoe later shared a photo dump on Instagram, showcasing her lavish Dubai trip after leaving Bali. The couple stayed at Atlantis The Royal, with rooms starting from around £290 per night during July, which is considered low season. In peak season, rooms can cost £1,570 a night. Zoe shared on Instagram: 'Danny surprised me with a stat at @atlantistheroyal which I couldn't believe!!!
