Josh Moffett elated to edge sibling rivalry after clinching Cavan Stages Rally victory

Tyre choice proved to be something of a lottery for the duration of the closed-road event due to a handful of special stages being bone dry in parts and biblically wet in others.
However, Moffett – in his older-generation but much-preferred Hyundai Motorsport i20 R5 – got the rub of the green for the Third Round of the competition when it came to strategy.
That allowed him to carve out an early lead on the opening speed test alongside stand-in co-driver Andy Hayes before he steadily added to that to finish at the head of the leaderboard.
His older brother Sam – another former National champion – made it a Moffett one-two courtesy of a scratch time on the Power Stage. He went all out for the extra bonus point and, in doing so, leapfrogged Kevin Eves to take second in his Hyundai i20 N Rally2.
'It was a good day and we really enjoyed it,' said Josh, whose winning margin after almost 70 competitive miles was 18.2 seconds.
'With the Citroen breaking down on the last event in Kerry, it was important that we came here and got the win for the Championship.
'Getting a one-two is also pretty cool as well because it has been a while since that has happened,' he continued. 'But the most important thing is that I am on the top step!'
Having been hampered in the opening exchanges by too hard a set-up, Sam's pursuit of a podium place was boosted on stage three when Round Two winner Eddie Doherty spun his Skoda Fabia RS Rally2 and Garry Jennings did the same in his M-Sport Ford Fiesta Rally2.
His run to second was anything but plain sailing, however, as he got caught out under braking and ended up down a slip road on SS5 before reporting a pop-off valve issue on the next test.
Set-up issues played into the hands of Eves on the penultimate stage before Sam regrouped to move back into the silver medal position with Shane Buckley right at the death.
Robert Barrable produced a strong recovery drive to climb from seventh to fourth, helped in part by Jennings' earlier spin and Doherty's Czech supermini breaking a half shaft and a rear anti-roll bar.
However, fifth was still good enough for Round Two winner Doherty to bank some all-important points.
While he remains very much in the title hunt, Desi Henry's hopes were dealt another blow in Cavan.
Targeting at least a top-three result, the best he could manage in a hired Ford Fiesta Rally2 was sixth, meaning the signs suggest he is set to pull out of the Championship.

Ryan Reynolds and Wrexham a Celtic and Rangers transfer 'issue' as ex Premier League star delivers brutal verdict

The Welsh side are backed by Hollywood stars and are shopping in a similar market Big-spending Wrexham are a problem for the Old Firm, according to a former Premier League star. Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have invested millions since buying the Welsh side in February 2021. ‌ And after winning promotion to the Championship for next season, they are pushing the boat out to fulfil their Premier League dream. ‌ The Dragons have been linked with Jamie Vardy who has also been touted for a move to both Celtic and Rangers since leaving Leicester City. And former Blackburn Rovers striker Matt Jansen reckons that is an issue for the Glasgow giants - as he floated Ashley Young as a possible Parkhead target. Asked if Wrexham are a problem for Celtic and Rangers as they want to sign similar players, he told Genting Casino: 'Yes. I think there will be a host of teams that could attract the same players. Birmingham are spending a lot of money as well. 'I'd probably put Rangers and Celtic as attractive as a top half Championship side, I think, especially for English-based players but maybe not so for the Scottish-based players. 'Wrexham now are another team that can compete with Rangers Celtic certainly for the same types of players.' On Ashley Young he said: 'Celtic are a massive team, they've got Champions League football. He's been playing at Everton recently so Wrexham's just round the corner, so he'd probably choose Wrexham at 39-years-old. ‌ 'Or does he want another crack at Champions League football? It's a difficult one, but would he uproot and go all the way to Scotland when he's been based in Merseyside, based in and around the area and not far from Wrexham? 'So that might suit him better, but Celtic's a massive team with Champions League football, so who knows, it would definitely be a toss of the coin.' ‌ Jansen reckons Old Firm-linked Vardy would be a good signing for Wrexham as a replacement for hitman Paul Mullin. He said: 'Paul Mullin did it in League Two. He was in and out of League One, although he had injuries. 'Vardy scored nine in the Premier League last season, 10 altogether and he's still relatively fit and sharp. ‌ 'It's really tough, the Championship, game after game, so would he be used sparingly? I don't think Vardy would be. I'm sure he'd chip in with a lot of goals and good experience. It would be a good addition. It might cost a few quid, but it'd be a good addition.' Aaron Ramsey breaks silence on Cardiff City exit in statement to fans

Aaron Ramsey breaks silence on Cardiff City exit in statement to fans The midfielder has left the club and is set to link up with Mexican side Pumas UNAM Aaron Ramsey has issued a statement to Cardiff fans (Image: Huw Evans Picture Agency Ltd ) Aaron Ramsey has finally spoken out about his exit from Cardiff City and issued a statement to supporters in which he described his two-year stay as "challenging". The 34-year-old is set to sign a one-year deal with Mexican club PUMAS UNAM following his release from Cardiff. Ramsey's contract expires next week, with the player having decided not to exercise a one-year trigger to his playing deal — a decision that came after protracted and advanced discussions about him potentially becoming the club's new permanent manager. ‌ Ramsey took charge of Cardiff's final three games of the 2024/25 Championship campaign in an interim role following the sacking of Omer Riza. Join the Cardiff City breaking news and top stories WhatsApp community ‌ Despite discussions over being handed the job permanently, that never materialised. Then a bombshell report emerged that he would quit the Welsh capital in favour of a move to the Mexican city, a story which really took supporters by surprise. Cardiff, subsequently, then moved to appoint former Manchester City EDS and Rochdale boss Brian Barry-Murphy as their new head coach. Article continues below A return to boyhood club Cardiff had been seen as a sentimental final chapter in his playing career, but after an injury-ravaged two years, Ramsey's latest spell in the Welsh capital saw so much excitement left unfulfilled. The midfielder managed just 23 games in all competitions across two seasons as fitness struggles really took their toll. And that, as well as relegation, has seen Ramsey feel "a lot of different emotions". ‌ In a statement to supporters, he said: "I leave Cardiff City with a lot of different emotions. "Although it has been personally challenging at times I made sure to give my all on and off the pitch for this wonderful club that is so close to my heart. "For now I am on a new adventure but I will be keeping a close eye on the club as always and it will forever have my support. Article continues below "Good luck to the staff and all the players for the upcoming season and a big thank you to the amazing fans! Until next time." Ramsey appears determined to continue playing at a high level in a bid to lead Wales to the World Cup in North America next summer, despite not having played for his country since last September. With Mexico one of the host nations for the 2026 tournament — alongside the USA and Canada — a move to Pumas signals the midfielder's intent to be visible and gain match sharpness ahead of what is likely to be his final major international tournament, should Wales qualify.
