R Ashwin applies reverse psychology for Kuldeep Yadav to get picked for Lord's Test: 'I am saying he won't play'

Hindustan Times13 hours ago
Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin applied reverse psychology while discussing Kuldeep Yadav's chances of making the XI for the third Test. Kuldeep hasn't had a chance to showcase his skills on English soil so far in the series. Despite support from various critics, team decisions led by Gautam Gambhir and Shubman Gill have favoured other spin options in the playing XI. The Indian management went ahead with Washington Sundar for the Edgbaston Test to partner with Ravindra Jadeja and strengthen the lower batting order, which failed miserably in Leeds. Sundar justified his selection with a crucial knock with the bat in India's mammoth first innings total of 587. He scored a valuable 42 runs and stitched a crucial 144-run seventh-wicket partnership with captain Shubman Gill, who went on to score a double century.
Ashwin, who had earlier advocated for Kuldeep's inclusion in the first two Tests, now appears to be using reverse psychology in a subtle bid to boost the spinner's chances of being selected for the Lord's Test.
'Kuldeep Yadav won't play. We have been saying this from the last two Tests that he should play. So, this time I am hitting reverse, which is why I am saying he won't play,' Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.
Kuldeep made his Test debut in 2017, but since then, he has played only 13 Tests for India despite an impressive record of claiming 56 wickets at a strike rate of 37.3.
'Don't think Kuldeep finds a place in the XI'
However, Ashwin suggested it would be extremely tough for Kuldeep to find a place as India won't look to tinker with the winning combination.
"I don't think Kuldeep finds a place in the XI at this point in time. Sometimes, it's very unfortunate. We won the Test, so it is very difficult to change the winning combination. I think they will go with the same combination," he added.
India will probably hold off on deciding whether to play Kuldeep Yadav in the Lord's Test. Team management is considering both conditions and team balance. The left-arm wrist-spinner has been close to selection this series, even with calls for him to play. However, Jasprit Bumrah's return, rested from the last match, significantly strengthens India's bowling before the key third Test.

Spinners lead the way as India women clinch historic series win over England in 4th T20I

India chased down a target of 127 with six wickets and 18 deliveries to spare at Manchester's Old Trafford, seal a maiden T20I series victory of England with an unassailable 3-1 lead in the process. read more The Indian players celebrate England opener Sophia Dunkley's dismissal during the fourth T20I in Manchester on Wednesday, 9 July. Reuters India scripted a landmark victory, clinching their first-ever Women's T20I series win against England with a dominant six-wicket triumph in the fourth match, led by a stellar performance from their spinners. With this win, India took an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series, with the final game scheduled to be played in Birmingham on Saturday. India had beaten England in a lone T20I match played in Derby in 2006. Since then, the 'Women in Blue' have fallen short in every women's T20I series against England, both at home and away. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Spin played a starring role in India's dominant win on Wednesday as Radha Yadav (2/15), 20-year-old Shree Charani (2/30), and Deepti Sharma (1/29) combined to claim five wickets, restricting the hosts to a modest 126 for 7. Openers Shafali Verma (32) and Smriti Mandhana (31) then chased with flair, putting on a 56-run stand that laid the foundation for the win. The visitors overhauled the target with 18 balls to spare, capping off a memorable evening. The victory comes as a timely boost for India, helping them acclimatise to English conditions ahead of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup scheduled to be held here next year. Delight in the air 🥳#TeamIndia's joyous moments after completing a 6 wicket win over England and sealing the #ENGvIND T20I series 🤝 — BCCI Women (@BCCIWomen) July 10, 2025 'We are really grateful that we were able to do this (series win). I'm really proud of my team the way we played this series. It was really important to get that momentum and I'm really happy the way we all contributed,' India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur said at the post-match presentation. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'We had very good camps back home before coming here. We worked on all our plans, accordingly we have executed everything here. Everybody knew their role and accordingly we all played,' she added. Kaur and Co. have been in red-hot form, having handed England a record-shattering 97-run defeat in the series-opener before sealing a 24-run win in Bristol, England women's first-ever T20I loss at the venue. They lost the third T20I by five runs. Electing to bat first, England found themselves under early pressure as Indian spinners Radha and Deepti struck within the powerplay, removing both the openers. Stand-in captain Tammy Beaumont, leading in the absence of the injured Nat Sciver-Brunt, briefly counterattacked with a 16-ball 20 that included three boundaries. But her stay was cut short by Radha, and five balls later, Charani trapped Alice Capsey leg-before, leaving England wobbling at 93 for 5. India's bowlers were backed by a sharp fielding effort that squeezed England during the middle overs, keeping the hosts to a sub-par total. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD With the bat, Shafali came out swinging, taking on the short-ball ploy with confidence and cracking six boundaries. Mandhana too joined the charge, striking five fours of her own. Though both openers fell in quick succession, the platform was well set. Jemimah Rodrigues (24 not out) and Harmanpreet Kaur (26) steered India home through a boundary-less phase between overs 8 to 14 to eventually take India to the win.

"Don't Take It Out Of Context": R Ashwin's 'Coaching' Revelation On Shubman Gill's Press Conferences

Shubman Gill 's press conferences have been quite entertaining. The newly-appointed India captain didn't hesitate to troll an English reporter who had questioned his team's ability to beat England at Edgbaston. After Gill's side did the unthinkable at the venue where they had never won before, Gill's funny avatar was witnessed in the press conference by everyone. Even former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has enjoyed Gill's press conference, which aren't 'coached' like they are to many other players across the globe. "Shubman has a natural flair. I was watching his press conference, and I immediately found that he is not putting on a show. He is talking like who he is. He is leading the team according to his natural self and skills," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel. Ashwin also pointed out how overseas media tries to get under the opponent captain's skin by targeting them in press conferences. But, the manner in which Gill has handled media and himself, has impressed Ashwin. "In overseas tours, the media tries to target the captain because if you bring the captain down, it becomes easy to bring the team down. You can get them to fall like nine pins if you go after the captain," he added. "Don't take it out of context, but a lot of players are coached about what to say and what to do. That doesn't seem to be the case with Shubman Gill. He looks like a man who is doing what he believes in." In the Edgbaston Test, Gill smashed 269 and 161 in the game -- becoming only the second player in history to score more than 150 in both innings of a Test -- as India thrashed England by 336 runs to level the five-match series 1-1. This was also his first win as Test captain. The 24-year-old, who was ranked 23rd before the series, then jumped 15 places to a career-best No.6 in the world, as per the latest ICC Test batters' rankings released on Wednesday. His match haul of 430 runs took his tally in the series to 585 with three Tests still to play. Gill's previous career-best rank was 14th, which he had achieved in September 2023.
