KFSHRC Pioneering Clinical Trials and Gene Therapy Across the Region - Middle East Business News and Information
As part of Saudi Arabia's broader biotechnology transformation under Vision 2030, King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSHRC) solidified its role as the Kingdom's leading Clinical Trials hub in 2024 — conducting 52.4% of all active Clinical Trials nationwide, according to the Saudi National Institute of Health.
This milestone reflects the sustained success of KFSHRC's Clinical Trials Transformation Initiative, launched in 2021 to build an integrated, patient-centered research ecosystem. By the end of 2024, the hospital had recorded 701 active research proposals, representing an 8% increase over the previous year. In Riyadh alone, research approvals rose by 20%, demonstrating growing alignment between scientific discovery and clinical care delivery.
KFSHRC's research growth was matched by key innovation milestones. In 2024, it became the first in Saudi Arabia to locally produce CAR-T cells — a major step toward national self-sufficiency in advanced therapies. It also delivered a breakthrough in hemophilia care, using one-time gene therapy to restore clotting function in eight patients, eliminating preventive treatment and significantly improving quality of life.
These advancements align closely with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 and National Biotechnology Strategy, which designate biotechnology as a national priority sector — aiming to localize therapeutic development, accelerate innovation, and establish global leadership by 2040.
Complementing its scientific leadership, KFSHRC has also invested in public engagement, launching awareness campaigns in high-traffic public venues to promote Clinical Trials literacy and reduce misconceptions around participation.
It is noteworthy that KFSHRC has been ranked first in the Middle East and Africa and 15th globally among the world's top 250 Academic Medical Centres for the third consecutive year, and recognised as the most valuable healthcare brand in the Kingdom and the Middle East, according to the 2025 Brand Finance rankings. Additionally, it was included in the World's Best Smart Hospitals list for 2025 by Newsweek magazine.

Ahmed Emam Egypt has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening research cooperation and partnerships within the BRICS group, participating actively in the 17th BRICS Academic Forum (FABRICS) held in Brasília, Brazil, on the sidelines of preparations for the upcoming Rio de Janeiro Summit. Representing Egypt at the event, the Cabinet's Information and Decision Support Center (IDSC) joined two days of discussions spanning six key themes: health cooperation among BRICS nations, AI governance, trade, investment and finance, climate change, multilateral peace and security, and institutional development. The forum concluded with an official session summarizing outcomes and future recommendations. In his opening address, Dr. Osama El-Gohary, Assistant to the Prime Minister and Head of IDSC, underscored Egypt's determination to deepen research collaboration and support South-South partnerships. He emphasized the importance of knowledge exchange and academic dialogue in priority areas for BRICS countries. El-Gohary also outlined Egypt's efforts and initiatives across the forum's key discussion areas, highlighting how the country aims to leverage BRICS cooperation to further its national development goals. A key highlight was Egypt's establishment of a dedicated 'BRICS Unit' under the Cabinet, designed to coordinate strategies across government ministries, relevant agencies, and the private sector, accelerating Egypt's integration into BRICS frameworks. Egypt presented strategic directions aimed at enhancing its role in trade, investment, and finance, aligning with the targets of Egypt's Vision 2030. Discussions also tackled the opportunities and challenges of using local currencies in intra-BRICS trade, as well as innovative digital and financial tools to support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Participants spotlighted prospects for cooperation in sustainable supply chains and sustainable trade, stressing the importance of aligning trade policies with climate commitments without compromising developmental priorities in the Global South. On the sidelines of the forum, IDSC engaged in a special session with the BRICS Think Tank Network for Finance (BTTNF), focusing on two joint research studies planned for this year. The first study will examine 'Credit Ratings and Development Finance among BRICS Countries: International Context and Egypt's Case Study,' while the second will explore 'Innovative Climate Finance Instruments.' During the closing session, El-Gohary emphasized the need to translate the forum's outcomes into practical policies that benefit Global South nations. The forum concluded with the launch of a preliminary report on cooperation mechanisms within BRICS, identifying over 180 cooperation frameworks among member states. The report reflects the commitment of BRICS nations—including Egypt—to promoting transparency and facilitating data exchange among national institutions. Notably, Egypt is participating in multiple cooperation initiatives across ten critical sectors, including agriculture, energy, education, economy, science, culture, labor, security, and social development, signaling the country's growing integration into BRICS institutional structures. Egyptian Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly has instructed the technical secretariat of the BRICS Unit to translate the report into Arabic and coordinate with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other relevant agencies to ensure Egypt maximizes the benefits of BRICS cooperation mechanisms. It is worth mentioning that IDSC recently joined the BRICS Think Tank Council (BTTC) and became an official member of the BRICS Think Tank Network for Finance (BTTNF) in 2024. Investment Minister urges petrochemical companies to bolster partnerships with Egypt
'Egypt is working on developing several major petrochemical projects that will contribute to securing the needs of the local market and exporting the surplus,' Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Hassan Al-Khatib said. Khatib was speaking during a roundtable event focused on the mining and petrochemical industries, held in Shanghai with the participation of representatives of major companies and investors to discuss partnership opportunities and increase investment flows between Egypt and China. Highlighting the strategic importance of the petrochemical sector for Egyptian industry, given its pivotal role in supporting a series of supplementary industries, Khatib said, noting that Egypt is working on an ambitious program to expand this sector and increase local production, which would contribute to cutting the import bill and increasing exports. As for the mining sector, the minister shed light on the government's reforms to create an investment-friendly environment. According to Egypt's Vision 2030, this sector is one of the main pillars of economic diversification and long-term growth, the minister said, noting that the government seeks to create more jobs, promote technology transfer, and optimize the use of mineral resources. Khatib said that the Egyptian government is moving forward with structural reforms in the petrochemical and mining industries, in support of the state's efforts towards a more resilient, diversified and sustainable economy. He called on international companies to build stronger partnerships with Egypt and contribute to the implementation of major projects under-construction in Egypt, to achieve mutual interests and promote sustainable growth.
