'Stars align' for A-League Men's Melbourne finale

Yahoo24-05-2025
A first derby grand final between Melbourne City and Melbourne Victory can be a shot in the arm for both the A-League Men and football in Australia.
That's what City coach Aurelio Vidmar and his players believe after setting up one of the most tantalising finales in recent years.
City will host their arch-rivals at AAMI Park, both clubs' home ground, next Saturday night.
Incredibly, it will be the only major men's sporting event in town that evening, with no AFL or NRL games scheduled in Melbourne.
It means the hottest tickets in town should deliver a sell-out grand final, and give a struggling competition a big publicity and financial boost.
"The stars have aligned for football fans for next week," Vidmar said.
"It feels like it's already building up straight away.
"I think it's what everyone is talking about straight after the game. So it's worked out well."
Striker Max Caputo, a Melbourne local, is pinching himself at the prospect of a packed, raucous AAMI Park.
"This is the best outcome for the A-League in general, in Australian football, to have a Melbourne derby in a grand final like this, it sure brings bums on seats," he said.
"So not much bigger stakes than this."
Vidmar has urged his charges to embrace every moment of grand final week.

"It's going to be a super week. We just have to enjoy it," Vidmar said.
"Whatever comes our way - I'm sure there's going to be lots of interviews and lots of things happening, but we'll just try to keep as calm as we possibly can and enjoy it, because you can't shy away from it.
"Some will probably handle it better than others, I'd imagine.
"But the message from me would be just to keep calm, to enjoy it, not to put too much stress on yourself, and then come out and try to be at your very, very best on the very final day of the season."
City progressed to their fourth grand final in five seasons after drawing 1-1 with Western United on Saturday night, going through 4-1 on aggregate.
But before their game, they watched as Victory stunned Auckland FC 2-0 away to win their semi-final 2-1 on aggregate.

Caputo, a City academy product, couldn't be happier with how things have played out.
"These are moments you dream of," he said.
"We were watching the game before the our game, and we saw Victory won, and that kind of geed the boys up even more.
"So now we're going into a grand final, derby final. So doesn't get much bigger than this, does it?"

Real Madrid reject €75 million offer for key midfield star

The one position Real Madrid see to be in need of reinforcement but have not strengthened this summer is the defensive midfield, a department where they have been linked with Angelo Stiller, Rodri, Martin Zubimendi and others. Manager Xabi Alonso sees the pivot position to be one where the squad lacks a natural ball player and a controlling presence. As it stands, Aurelien Tchouameni is the only natural profile in the position and is thus expected to have a big role in the new season. Real Madrid's tactics in the FIFA Club World Cup spoke volumes about the importance of the defensive midfield position in Alonso's plans as Tchouameni served as the focal point in the buildup and effectively a third centre-back. Not for sale As relayed in a recent report by Fichajes, Alonso and Real Madrid see Tchouameni to be untransferable for any price in the current transfer market and will not sanction his departure at any cost. Tchouameni will not be sold. (Photo by) The manager sees the player to be a vital part of his plans and thus does not contemplate a sale in any capacity despite interest arriving from the Premier League – possibly from Arsenal. The report further reports that the offer from England reportedly included a transfer fee of €75 million – a sum that is significant in the current market dynamics. Even that sum, however, was not enough to make the club consider a sale as Real Madrid do not wish to part ways with him this summer. Tchouameni, for his part, is happy at the club and is eager to continue his relationship with Real Madrid for the years to come. He wishes to compete only at the highest level, something he believes he can only do at the best club in the world.

Bev Priestman named head coach of Ninja A-League side Wellington Phoenix

'Today's a good day.' Those were the words of Bev Priestman as she was unveiled as the new head coach of Wellington Phoenix. She has signed a two-year deal with the Ninja A-League outfit. Durham-born Priestman is no stranger to New Zealand. Sixteen years ago, she headed up coach development in Wellington. She then went on to become New Zealand Football's director of football development. 'Coming back to New Zealand and seeing the Phoenix week in week out as the only professional women's team has been amazing,' she said following her announcement. Priestman spent stints with the Canadian U17s and U20s, before she was appointed as England assistant manager in 2018. She was part of Phil Neville's coaching staff that reached the 2019 World Cup semi-finals in France. Bev Priestman returns to coaching In 2020, Priestman returned to Canada — this time as head coach of the senior national team. She led them to Olympic gold in Tokyo before a disappointing group stage exit at the 2023 World Cup. Her time in charge of the Canadians ended in a shroud of controversy last summer. Priestman, assistant manager Jasmine Mander and analyst Joseph Lombardi were all dismissed in the wake of the 'spying' scandal when members of the backroom staff were caught flying a drone over — ironically — a New Zealand training session before their match in the Paris Olympics. Priestman was subsequently handed a one-year ban from all football related activities. Embed from Getty Images Phoenix chair, Rob Morrison was bullish on the appointment of their new manager and broader investment into the 'Nix women's side: 'This is a step up in an exciting era for the Phoenix women's team. Along with our significant ongoing investment in the women's academy programme, we have doubled our investment in the women's first team and this has resulted in us being able to recruit some great international players.' The international players Morrison is referring to include Teseel Middag and Lucía León, as well as bringing Football Ferns Victoria Esson and CJ Bott back to New Zealand from stints in Scotland and England respectively. The upcoming A-League season may just be the most intriguing one yet for the side from across The Tasman. 🎣 Is this a football pitch or a lake, only fishing helps here

Is this still a soccer field or already a lake? This question seems to have been asked by a groundskeeper in Switzerland, who promptly pulled out his fishing rod. Don't believe it? Here's the proof. The game in the second Swiss soccer league – the Challenge League – between FC Aarau and Bellinzona had to be interrupted last weekend with a score of 3:1 due to heavy rain. Even the fans, who tried to drain the lawn with cloths and shovels, couldn't prevent the game from being cancelled. At least there was a group photo with the players as compensation. A day later, the home stadium of FC Aarau didn't look any better, quite the opposite. The field was so flooded that it was hardly distinguishable from a lake. Aarau groundskeeper Gil Hemmi didn't let it bother him that his workplace was underwater for the time being and would certainly involve a lot of work in the next few days. Instead, he recorded a video in which he strolled calmly with a vest and fishing rod on the tribune and cast his line into the river-like area between the seats and the sideline. Whether he found anything there beyond maybe a fallen bratwurst or a beer mug, remained unsolved. This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence.
