Photos: Egypt inaugurates Qaitbay Citadel Visitor Center
The center was set up within one of the halls of the main tower of the Qaitbay Citadel, in cooperation with the French Center for Alexandrian Studies, under the direction of the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Sherif Fathy.
The Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Mohamed Ismail Khaled, explained that this comes as part of the ministry's strategy to improve services at archaeological sites and enhance cultural communication with visitors.
It also aims to shed light on the rich history of the archaeological area surrounding Qaitbay Citadel, including prominent historical sites, such as the ancient lighthouse and the eastern port, which was a pivotal part of the royal district of ancient Alexandria.
The Director General of the General Administration of Tourist, Archaeological Sites, and Museums Services, Bassem Ibrahim, said that the center provides information on unique archaeological structures, such as the Royal Port, the Timonium Building, Antrodos Island, the marine docks, and the shipyards.
The visitor center also explores the development of Alexandria's defensive fortifications, focusing on the historical role of Qaitbay Citadel, along with the fortifications constructed during the reign of Muhammad Ali Pasha along the northern coast.
He added that the center's display features nine bilingual information panels in Arabic and English, supported by maps and illustrative diagrams that facilitate understanding of the historical and architectural sequence of the area.
A screen also displays a film about the ancient lighthouse site, along with seating for visitors to rest.

Egypt Operates Second Special Train for Sudanese Voluntary Return
According to the United Nations, over 1.3 million Sudanese have returned to their areas of origin since the start of the conflict in Sudan. Jul 28, 2025 National Railways Authority has announced the operation of a second special train to facilitate the voluntary return of Sudanese citizens currently residing in Egypt, following the completed operations of their first special train earlier this month. The move comes in response to the ongoing conflict in Sudan, which has displaced millions since April 2023. Train number 1940 departed from Cairo Station on Monday, July 28th, and then arrived at High Dam Station in Aswan on the same day. From there, returnees are expected to continue their journey into Sudan via river or overland routes. The special service includes an additional baggage carriage and will run a return trip from Aswan to Cairo as train number 1945, scheduled to depart at 8:30 PM on Tuesday, July 29th. Egyptian authorities have waived travel penalties and are providing logistical support for Sudanese nationals in coordination with the voluntary return committee. Egypt currently hosts more than 5.5 million Sudanese nationals, and is the largest host country for Sudanese refugees. According to the United Nations, over 1.3 million Sudanese have returned to their areas of origin since the start of the conflict, including approximately 320,000 returning from Egypt and South Sudan. However, many parts of Sudan remain insecure, and returns continue to be undertaken on a voluntary basis.

Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Launches Egypt's First Online Training Platform in Tourism and Antiquities: EGTAP.com
Ali abo deshish Mr. Sherif Fathy, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, officially launched Egypt's first online training platform dedicated to the fields of tourism and antiquities, under the name The platform aims to offer accredited and diverse training programs to upskill and qualify human resources within the Ministry and across the tourism and antiquities sectors, in alignment with Egypt's national strategy to invest in human capital and advance digital transformation. In his opening remarks, Minister Fathy emphasized that this initiative is part of the Ministry's broader plan to build capable human resources who can adapt to rapid global changes by leveraging the latest technologies and digital tools to enhance governmental performance. He noted that the development of human capital is a cornerstone in improving service quality and enhancing Egypt's competitiveness as a leading global tourism destination. The Minister explained that the platform offers professional training content tailored to the needs of both public and private sector workers in tourism and antiquities, as well as researchers and students in the field. It provides a variety of training courses, workshops, and programs led by top academics and industry experts, with continuous performance evaluations for both trainers and trainees to ensure effective learning and maximum impact. He added that the platform introduces a flexible and advanced e-learning model that allows users to study from anywhere, at any time, and earn official digital certificates upon successful completion. In the future, the platform is also expected to connect outstanding trainees with job opportunities in the private tourism sector, further enhancing workforce quality. Moreover, the Minister noted that the platform's content will be continuously updated with new programs that reflect sector demands, including areas like sustainable tourism, food safety, marketing, management, hospitality, and more. Minister Fathy also expressed his gratitude to Dr. Amr Talaat, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, and his team, as well as the executing company, for their support in completing the platform's technical infrastructure—highlighting the fruitful cooperation between the two ministries. It ensures equal training opportunities and represents a qualitative leap in the training of Ministry employees and affiliated bodies, with specialized courses in archaeological sites and museums, human development, scientific research, arts and architecture, history and civilization, excavation sciences, and entrepreneurship.
