Alabama to face prominent ACC program in 2025-26 preseason exhibition

USA Today09-07-2025
Following an official announcement Tuesday afternoon, the Alabama Crimson Tide and Florida State Seminoles will not only meet on the gridiron this upcoming fall, but also on the hardwood as well.
Yes, only weeks after the Crimson Tide and Seminoles meet in Tallahassee to open the college football season, both of Alabama and Florida State will reportedly play in men's and women's basketball prior to the start of the 2025-26 campaign. Both games will be played from Boutwell Auditorium in Birmingham, Alabama on Thursday, Oct. 16.
Alabama men's basketball also played a preseason exhibition game a year ago in Boutwell Auditorium in which the Crimson Tide defeated Wake Forest by a final score of 98-77.
A team that should provide a test for the Crimson Tide, Florida State's men's team is coming off a season in which the Seminoles missed the NCAA Tournament at 17-15 overall, as well as 8-12 in ACC play. The former team for new Alabama transfer addition Taylor Bol Bowen, Florida State will also begin a new era in 2025-26 as Luke Loucks takes over for former head coach Leonard Hamilton.
Florida State's women's team finished last season at 24-9 overall, as well as 13-5 in ACC play, to make the NCAA Tournament as a six-seed.

Kansas coach Bill Self underwent heart procedure after experiencing ‘concerning symptoms'

Kansas men's basketball coach Bill Self was hospitalized after he experienced 'some concerning symptoms,' the school said in a statement Thursday. Self, who underwent a heart procedure, is expected to make a full recovery and is set to be released from Lawrence Memorial Hospital 'soon.' 'Kansas men's basketball coach Bill Self felt unwell and experienced some concerning symptoms Thursday,' Kansas said in a statement. 'He was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where he had two stents inserted. Jayhawks head coach Bill Self is seen on the sidelines during the second half of Kansas' 98-94 win over UCF in the Big 12 Conference tournament on March 12, 2025. AP 'The procedure went very well, and he is expected to make a full recovery. He is in good spirits and expects to be released from the hospital soon.' Self was also hospitalized midway through the 2023 season because of a blockage in his arteries, where the 62-year-old had a standard heart catheterization and two stents placed. The longtime Jayhawks coach responded well to that procedure, according to the University of Kansas Health System. Self's most recent hospitalization comes amid a busy offseason for Kansas after a disappointing season in which the Jayhawks got bounced in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Kansas head coach Bill Self yells during the Jayhawks' 81-65 win over Villanova in the Final Four on April 2, 2022. AP Self said his program has started to take a different approach regarding acquiring talent from the transfer portal this year by shifting away from the traditional rankings. 'It seemed like, to me, this year we emphasized more not what other people thought of rankings and stuff like that,' Self told 247Sports this week. 'Not that that was our emphasis before, but the appearance is, 'Well, you go out and get the guys that are the highest rated guys that are in the portal,' which is good. You get Hunter. That's a great get. 'But I think the emphasis was more on what we needed to do to allow us to play as athletic and to play the style that best suits us and best fits me for winning, and I think we were actually able to do that.'

Florida point guard Boogie Fland sidelined for summer workouts following sports hernia surgery

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida point guard Boogie Fland is recovering from sports hernia surgery, and coach Todd Golden expects the Arkansas transfer to be full speed by the time fall camp begins in September. Speaking at a booster event Thursday evening, Golden said Fland had surgery July 3 and will be sidelined up to six weeks. He has missed the last three weeks of summer workouts. 'He'll be back when school starts,' Golden said. 'He could have played through it, but it made more sense to get it taken care of so he didn't have to worry about it during the season.' The 6-foot-2, 175-pound Fland averaged 13.5 points, 5.1 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 1.5 steals in 21 games with the Razorbacks last season. The freshman from New York averaged nearly 32 minutes a game despite missing time with a right thumb injury that required surgery. He returned for three postseason games before entering the NBA draft. He withdrew his name from consideration before visiting Gainesville and signing with the defending national champions in May. Fland joined Princeton transfer Xaivian Lee and Ohio University transfer AJ Brown in Golden's revamped backcourt. The trio is expected to replace Walter Clayton Jr., Alijah Martin and Will Richard. The Gators also lost fellow guard Denzel Aberdeen to Kentucky. With Golden at the helm for his third season in Gainesville, the Gators finished 36-4 and beat Houston to clinch the program's third national title. They won their final 12 games, including four in the NCAA Tournament in come-from-behind fashion. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here . Bill Belichick thankful to be coaching UNC, highlights team growth at ACC Kickoff

What type of player does Bill Belichick like to coach? Larry Fedora fizzled out. Mack Brown didn't work during his second stint. This offseason, the UNC football team went big with its latest head coaching hire: 8-time Super Bowl Champion Bill Belichick. Despite never previously coaching at the college level, Belichick's NFL resumé speaks for itself. He turned the New England Patriots from a decent franchise into the NFL's most-feared dynasty, developing the greatest football player to walk this earth in Tom Brady. Belichick is no stranger to the Tar Heels, though. Belichick's dad, Steve, was an assistant coach in Chapel Hill from 1953-1955. At the ACC Kickoff event on Thursday afternoon in Charlotte, Belichick spoke about the opportunity to come back and coach college football, digging in on player development. 'I've always wanted to coach in college – and I'm glad to have the opportunity to be at a great school like Carolina," Belichick said in front of a packed media room. "The great thing about working with college players is the growth and development that I've seen with them. Developing players is really what coaching is. We take great pride in that. A Carolina player is a player who wants to be a good football player, who wants to work hard, who wants to make a commitment towards improving on a regular basis, both training and team execution on the field." UNC hired Belichick back in December 2024, so he's now going on month seven working with his new players. Several people are expecting a championship-caliber Tar Heels team in 2025, but it all depends on how Belichick develops his guys. The first opportunity for North Carolina fans – and the entire college football world – to see offseason development pay off will be Monday, September 1 at 8 p.m. in Kenan Stadium. UNC hosts TCU in the final game of Week 1, on ESPN, under the lights.
