Pakistan condemns Syria church suicide bombing as death toll surges to 25
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's foreign office this week condemned a suicide attack targeting a church in Syria that killed 25 people, reaffirming its support for efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace in the country.
Syrian state media reported that a suicide bomber carried out an attack inside the packed Mar Elias Church in Dweil'a on the outskirts of Damascus on Sunday. While no group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, the Syrian Interior Ministry said a fighter from the Daesh group entered the church and fired at the people there before detonating himself with an explosives vest.
'Pakistan strongly condemns the heinous suicide bombing at the Mar Elias Church in the Dweila neighborhood of Damascus, Syria, on 22 June 2025, which resulted in the loss of precious lives and left many injured,' Pakistan's foreign ministry said in a press release on Monday.
Islamabad expressed its heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.
'Pakistan stands in full solidarity with the brotherly people of Syria in this hour of grief, and reaffirms its strong support for efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace and stability in the country,' the foreign ministry added.
The church suicide blast was the first of its kind in Syria in years, and came as an interim government in Syria led by President Ahmed Al-Sharaa tries to win the support of minorities.
Syria has made major inroads into the international fold since President Bashar Assad was removed in December 2024 after over a decade of civil war in the restive country. His ouster led to the United States and the European Union lifting its sanctions on the Arab country.

Islamabad says the militants run training camps in Afghanistan to launch attacks inside Pakistan, a charge Kabul denies, saying the militancy is Pakistan's domestic issue. Pakistani Taliban also known as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), an umbrella group of several militant groups, has long been waging a war against Pakistan in a bid to overthrow the government. The Pakistani military, which has launched several offensives against the militants, has mostly been their prime target.

Suicide attack kills 16 soldiers in Pakistan: Sources
A suicide attack claimed by the Pakistani Taliban killed 16 soldiers and wounded more than two dozen people, including civilians, local government officials and police officers told AFP. 'A suicide bomber rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into a military convoy,' said a local government official in North Waziristan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, who asked not to be named because he was not authorized to speak to the media. He said 16 soldiers were killed, raising a previous death toll of 13. 'The explosion also caused the roofs of two houses to collapse, injuring six children,' a police officer posted in the district told AFP. The attack was claimed by the suicide bomber wing of the Hafiz Gul Bahadur armed group, a faction of the Pakistan Taliban. Pakistan has witnessed a sharp rise in violence in its regions bordering Afghanistan since the Taliban returned to power in Kabul in 2021, with Islamabad accusing its western neighbor of allowing its soil to be used for attacks against Pakistan – a claim the Taliban denies. Around 290 people, mostly security officials, have been killed in attacks since the start of the year by armed groups fighting the government in both Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, according to an AFP tally.

Saudi Arabia Condemns Israeli Settlers' Violence against Palestinians
Saudi Arabia has denounced the violence of Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, according to a statement by the Saudi Foreign Ministry. On Friday, the Foreign Ministry said that the Kingdom condemned and denounced the continued violence committed by Israeli settlers, under the protection of the Israeli forces, against Palestinian civilians, including the attacks in the village of Kafr Malik, east of Ramallah. Furthermore, Saudi Arabia reiterated its condemnation of the continued Israeli violence against unarmed civilians in Gaza, including targeting civilian sites housing displaced people, according to the statement. The Kingdom emphasized the need to make every effort to protect Palestinian civilians and enable the Palestinian people to exercise all their legitimate rights. It also renewed its call for the international community to assume its responsibilities to end Israeli violations of international laws and norms, the statement said. On Wednesday night, dozens of Israeli settlers stormed the village of Kafr Malik, east of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank. The Israeli settlers set vehicles and homes on fire, under the protection of Israeli forces, which fired live bullets at Palestinian civilians. The attack left three Palestinians dead and seven injured, according to Palestinian WAFA news agency. Israel has built about 160 settlements, housing some 700,000 Jews, since it occupied the West Bank and East Jerusalem in 1967, according to BBC. The international law deems settlements illegal. However, successive Israeli governments have allowed settlements to expand, most notably since the return of Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, to power in late 2022. In May 2025, Israel announced plans to establish 22 new settlements in the occupied West Bank, a controversial move backed by the Israeli Defense Minister, Israel Katz, and Finance Minister, Bezalel Smotrich.
