Cha Cuñada finds new fulfillment in deputy role for Letran Lady Knights

Known for her calm demeanor on the court as a player, Cha Cuñada now brings that same steady presence to the Colegio de San Juan de Letran women's volleyball coaching staff in the NCAA.
The 25-year-old former outside spiker admitted she was never the vocal leader back in her playing years and hat's exactly what she is using now in guiding the next generation of the Lady Knights.
"Mostly po talaga, [ang trabaho ko sa team ay] para lang nila akong ate. Parang ako kumbaga 'yung taga-balance sa team kasi syempre si coach 'pag nagagalit, so parang sa akin sila nagra-rant or humihingi ng advice," Cuñada told GMA News Online.
"Pero at the same time, sa skills din kasi naging player din naman ako kaya tumulong-tulong din ako pagdating sa drill. Pinagkakatiwalaan din naman ako ni Coach O (Oliver Almadro) and 'yung mga players alam ko naman na nakikinig din naman sila sa akin."
As a silent operator, Cuñada made sure her game did the talking.
The 5-foot-5 hitter suited up for both the indoor and beach volleyball teams for Letran from Season 94 to Season 98, a stretch that saw her leading the Lady Knights to a beach volleyball crown in Season 98 and bagging the MVP plum in the process.
She has now transitioned to coaching, helping Letran head coach Oliver Almadro full-time since Season 99 as they look to lead the rebirth of the Lady Knights.
Cuñada admitted that transitioning from player to coach wasn't easy, especially since many of the players on the current roster were once her teammates, making it tricky to strike the right balance in her new role.
"At first, mahirap kasi maraming players dito 'yung naabutan pa akong maglaro, sina Lara, si Nathalie [Estreller], si Juday [Nitura]. So parang ang hirap, hindi ko alam kung paano 'yung magiging approach ko sa kanila," Cuñada, who previously had stints with Chery Tiggo and Cignal, added.
"Pero na-realize ko na hindi naman lahat kailangan idaan sa taas ng boses, nakikinig naman sila kahit 'pag kinakausap ko lang nang maayos."

Andrew Estrella is new Letran Squires head coach
NCAA Andrew Estrella is the new head coach of the Colegio de San Juan Letran Squires. Estrella will replace Willie Miller who steered the Squires to a Final Four run in NCAA Season 100. Estrella handled the UE Junior Warriors U16 team in the past two seasons and delivered the title in UAAP U16 boys basketball last December. Benilde, Arellano off to Filoil Preseason quarterfinals alongside Letran, EAC
De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde and Arellano University crushed San Beda University and Jose Rizal University, respectively, on Wednesday to complete the four NCAA teams advancing to Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup quarterfinals. The Blazers waxed hot from downtown to punish the Red Lions with a 102-64 win while the surging Chiefs cruised to their fifth win in a row after an 82-60 victory over the Heavy Bombers. Benilde launched 15 huge three-pointers, four of which came from veteran guard Tony Ynot as he finished with 12 points, six assists, and three rebounds against his old team to help his current one improve to 6-1. Bonn Daja and transferee Shawn Umali chipped in 13 and 10 markers each in a balanced offense for the Blazers. The Red Lions, meanwhile, fell to a 2-4 card with three more games in their schedule, taking on Emilio Aguinaldo College, Lyceum of the Philippines University, and rival Colegio de San Juan de Letran in the coming days. Earlier, Arellano remained unbeaten with King Vinoya ruling on both ends after tallying 29 points, eight rebounds, five steals, and one assist as the Chiefs ended the elimination round with an impressive 6-3 card. Benilde and Arellano complete an unlikely top-four NCAA team in the preseason showcase alongside Letran and EAC. Clint Escamis, Bella Belen recognized in Collegiate Press Corps Awards Night

(Photo: Collegiate Press Corps) Mapua University's Clint Escamis, National University's Bella Belen, and other top student-athletes from the NCAA and UAAP were under one roof last Monday as the Collegiate Press Corps (CPC) held its Awards Night at Discovery Suites. Escamis received the Collegiate Press Corps Basketball Player of the Year Award presented by GMA Network, while Belen was the UAAP Women's Volleyball Player of the Year. 'I'm honored for this award and I know I couldn't have done this without my teammates, kaya it just fuels me to help Mapua win back-to-back championships,' said Escamis, who is returning for his final season with the Cardinals in the upcoming NCAA Season 101. Escamis also led the CPC Men's Basketball Mythical Team along with De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde's Allen Liwag from the NCAA, and JD Cagulangan (UP) and Kevin Quiambao and Mike Phillips (DLSU). Belen, on the other hand, was among the CPC's top volleyball awardees, along with schoolmate Leo Aringo, Jr. who bagged the Player of the Year plum for UAAP Men's Volleyball. Arellano University's Carl Berdal and Benilde's Zam Nolasco were the NCAA Volleyball Players of the Year for their respective divisions. Kacey dela Rosa of Ateneo de Manila University, meanwhile, was the CPC Women's Basketball Player of the Year, and led the Mythical Team alongside Cielo Pagdulagan of National University, Kent Pastrana of University of Santo Tomas, Elaine Etang of Adamson, and Louna Ozar of UP.
