Universal Postal Union partners Visa on financial inclusion

The Universal Postal Union (UPU), a UN agency that serves as the primary forum for cooperation between postal sector players, and Visa, a global leader in digital payments, have announced a strategic collaboration to expand access to digital postal financial services within the UPU network.

The collaboration aims to promote financial inclusion and stimulate economic development by leveraging the UN agency's international postal network and Visa's payments network.
As part of the collaboration, Visa and UPU announced three programs:
• Global Postal Digital Inclusive Finance Program: This program aims to help advance financial inclusion and economic resilience by providing tailored support for post offices that are digitalizing postal financial services. It will cover regions including Africa, Latin America & the Caribbean, Asia-Pacific, Europe, and the Arab world.
• Improving Postal Payment Interconnectivity: Enhance the UPU network's cross-border payment capabilities by integrating with Visa's global network.
• Cybersecurity & Risk Advisory Program: This initiative will leverage Visa's cybersecurity and risk credentials to assess and help enhance cybersecurity strategies, the safety and reliability of financial services within the UPU's postal payment system.
Key Areas of Collaboration:
• Digitalizing Postal Financial Services: Enhancing digital services such as international remittances, bill payments, and inbound payments to help meet postal operators' needs at their current stage of digitalization.
• Provision of Government Services through Postal Networks: Facilitating more inclusive access to government services and payments, including disbursements and tax collection, to support national financial inclusion strategies.
• Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise (MSME) Digitalization and Financing: Supporting the economic inclusion of MSMEs, particularly women-owned businesses, through digital solutions like e-marketplaces and mobile-based loan disbursements.
• Cybersecurity and Risk Management: Strengthening cybersecurity measures and risk mitigation tools to help protect the international postal network from potential cyber threats.
The new collaboration builds on the success of the UPU Financial Inclusion Technical Assistance Facility (FITAF), an initiative supported by Visa and the Gates Foundation that helps postal operators in developing countries provide financial services to local communities.

The UPU is a perfect collaborator for us in this respect as it plays a significant role in providing financial services to 1.5 billion people worldwide'.

Our goal is to diversify digital postal financial products and solutions to ensure that every community – no matter how remote – has access to relevant, reliable, and efficient services.
Promoting public-private partnerships, like the one with Visa, is a priority for the UPU in delivering sustainable and scalable digital solutions that meet the needs of underserved postal customers – helping them access digital payments, digital savings, credit, and inclusive insurance, while supporting national financial inclusion goals.'

The Works has hailed 'early success' with its turnaround strategy as the retailer saw profits jump by around a fifth. Shares in the books and stationery chain rose on Tuesday as a result. The retail firm told shareholders it benefited from a 'strong' performance after Christmas, with like-for-like sales rising by 6.4% in the final quarter of its financial year. However, online sales declined by 12.1% after it was knocked by 'temporary capacity constraints' at a third-party provider during peak season. The Works recorded a pre-tax profits of £8.3 million for the year, rising from £6.9 million a year earlier. On Tuesday, the company also revealed that trading has been 'strong' over the first 11 weeks of the new financial year with like-for-like sales growth of 5%. Gavin Peck, chief executive of the Works, said: 'We are delighted to have ended full-year 2025 in line with recently upgraded market expectations in a year defined by ongoing uncertainty and fragile consumer confidence. 'This encouraging performance is a huge credit to the early success of our new strategy launched in January 2025, Elevating the Works, which is already delivering tangible results. 'The strong trading delivered post-Christmas has continued into the start of our new financial year, with customers clearly loving our new spring and summer product ranges.' Shares in the The Works were up 9.4% on Tuesday.

England are once again through to the latter stages of a major international tournament but there remains a significant pay gap when it comes to what the Lionesses players are likely to earn financially this summer. England have reached a sixth consecutive major tournament semi-final - the best run of results in the team's history - and will bid to make it through to a third final in a row when they play Italy in Geneva. England won the Euros three years ago when they defeated Germany at Wembley and the Lionesses followed their first major honour by reaching the final of the Women's World Cup the next year. Before the start of Euro 2025, Uefa confirmed record prize money of €41m (£34m) for the 16-team tournament. It represents an increase of 156 per cent on the prize money offered at Euro 2022, when it stood at just €16m. England's federation received just over E2m when the Lionesses lifted Euro 2022 but the Euro 2025 champions can take home up to €5.1m, when performance bonuses are added on top of a base participation fee of €1.8m awarded to all teams at the tournament. The total prize money on offer at the men's Euro 2024 was €331m, with the champions Spain winning a maximum of €28.25m. The participation prize money for all 24 teams at the men's Euros was €9.25m. Player bonuses Before Euro 2025, Uefa's executive committee confirmed that participating teams would be required to distribute between 30 to 40 per cent of their prize money received at the tournament to the players for the first time, in a move that mirrored the agreement announced by Fifa ahead of the 2023 Women's World Cup. The Lionesses also reached an agreement with the Football Association (FA) over performance-related bonuses before the Euros, avoiding a repeat of the row that broke out in the lead up to England reaching the World Cup final two years ago. The Guardian reported that England's players would receive a collective bonus of £1.75m if they win Euro 2025. The agreement with the FA ensures that England players can receive a performance-related bonus from their national association, on top of their guaranteed cut of the prize money distributed by Uefa. Are England's players paid per match? England's players receive what is essentially a nominal fee of around £2,000 per match and there has been equal pay between the men's and women's national teams since 2020. Most donate this to charity but they are not required to. Top England internationals playing in the Women's Super League can receive annual salaries that are in the low six figures, while top England internationals in the Premier League are able to double that in one week. It was also also reported that the England men's team who reached the Euro 2024 final last summer would have shared a bonus pot of £14m had they beaten Spain in the Berlin final Of course, many Lionesses players can boost their incomes through sponsorships and paid partnerships. However, the reliance on social media to generate additional income may put some players in a difficult position at a time when members of the squad are advocating for a social media boycott following the racist abuse suffered by Jess Carter at the tournament.

It can be hard to know how much you should save though as everyone will have different goals and there are different factors at play such as your income and even your age. One common savings mantra is the 50/30/20 rule, where you spend half your salary on expenses, 30 per cent on wants and put 20 per cent in savings. Rachel Springall, finance expert at said: 'Everyone will have their own goals and aspirations when it comes to their savings pots which will change as people progress through their adult lives.' The right amount to save depends on your stage of life and what gives you peace of mind, says Philly Ponniah, chartered wealth manager at Philly Financial. 'Factors like job security, dependents, insurance, and access to other savings all play a role,' she explained. 'As with all personal finance, it's personal, the right safety net is the one that helps you feel financially secure.' There are a various ways to save, from high-interest easy access accounts that let you withdraw your funds when you need them, to cash ISAs where your returns are tax-free. However you put money aside, here is how much you should save based on your age. How much should you save in your 30s? By the time you reach age 30, you will most likely have finished studying and may have a student loan to repay, while you could also have left your childhood home and be balancing paying rent and saving for a deposit to buy your first property. There may even be plans to get married. That is a lot to put money aside for. The median salary for someone age 30 to 39 is £39,988, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), which would mean saving £7,997.60 annually or £666.47 on a monthly basis based on putting aside 20 per cent. However, Springall said: 'Typically, those in their 30s should be saving slightly more than 20 per cent, aiming for 25 per cent of their disposable income. They must also ensure they are contributing a fair portion of their salary into their pension and be sure to have some cash stashed away to have a holiday or pay for any hobbies to take care of their wellbeing.' How much should you save in your 40s? ONS figures suggest those in their 40s typically earn £42,796 per year. That would mean putting aside £8,559.20 a year or £713.27 per month. But by the time you reach your 40s, you may have even more financial challenges such as paying a mortgage, running your own business and even bringing up a family or caring for older family members. Springall added: 'It's no wonder then if some have forgotten to put a little bit of cash to one side. 'The general budgeting rule applies here, where 20 per cent of any disposable salary saved to cover costs, and ensure pension provisions are not neglected when other life events take centre stage. Those feeling the strain would be wise to set up a pot that's quick to access, in case of emergencies.' How much should you save in your 50s? In an ideal world, someone in their 50s would be close to paying off their mortgage, which should free up some savings and mean more money can be put towards retirement in hopefully the near future. ONS data suggests that median salaries drop once people are in their 50s, as some may slow down at work later into the decade. The typical salary for someone age 50 to 59 is £40,456 so putting aside 20 per cent would mean saving £8,091.20 per year or £674.27 a month. Springall suggests the lack of other financial commitments can hopefully free up a decent portion of someone's net income at this age but it would be wise to start thinking about funding your retirement. She said: 'People are working longer, and living longer, so that means they need to put even more money away into their pension to fund their retirement. 'The first question someone should ask is whether they will be able to retire 'comfortably' or not. If no, then they must prioritise building their savings, or relinquish assets to cover the cost of care and comforts. This is where advice is critical.'
