Elton John and Brandi Carlile Unite to Raise $1 Million to Offset Trump Cuts in HIV/AIDS Relief Funding

Yahoo16-04-2025
The Elton John AIDS Foundation and Brandi Carlile's Looking Out Foundation announced an initiative — the 'Who Believes In Angels?' Campaign — to offset recent cuts to HIV/AIDS relief funding by the Trump Administration.
'Without prompt action, decades of progress in the global fight against HIV could be reversed, creating a global health crisis that we have both the power and the tools to prevent,' said Elton John, founder of the Elton John AIDS Foundation. 'Our mission is more important than ever – we refuse to leave anyone behind – and I'm so fortunate that Brandi is not only a wonderful collaborator and artist, but a dear friend who shares my vision of a world where HIV care is prioritized and protected.'

The partnership, named after the recent collaborative album by the two artists, unites their foundatins and communities to raise funds for the Elton John AIDS Foundation's work and its Rocket Response Fund. This emergency initiative will help Elton John AIDS Foundation's partners maintain essential services following significant cuts in funding due to the termination of USAID support. The Rocket Response Fund will direct resources to reopen clinics, restore access to essential medications, and maintain prevention services, according to the announcement.
Donations to the campaign can be made here via the Looking Out Foundation.
International funding has been critical to reducing new HIV transmissions and deaths worldwide. However, many countries in addition to the U.S. are now considering cuts to aid. Recent projections from The Lancet HIV, based on data from 26 countries, estimate that up to 10.8 million additional HIV cases and 2.9 million HIV-related deaths could occur by 2030 if international support declines.
'It was a lifelong dream come true for me to come together with my hero and friend Elton John to make our album 'Who Believes in Angels?,' and now, we're excited to announce that our foundations are also partnering to make our music mean even more,' said Carlile, founder of the Looking Out Foundation. 'Elton's activism and work with the Elton John AIDS Foundation was what led me to Elton before I even heard a note of his music. It's an incredible honor to launch this partnership and raise funds for the life-saving work of the Elton John AIDS Foundation and the Rocket Response Fund at a time when support is needed the most.'

Dodger Stadium — Sports Venue Review

Let's start big picture. What's the vibe here? If you're in from out of town, this is where you'll get to see the most Angelenos in their natural environment, all dressed in their best Dodger blue. You don't even have to be a sports fan to have fun. There are concessions everywhere to get a Dodger dog (a footlong that somehow tastes better than you might think), a can of beer, and some nachos. It's fun and raucous, so get in the mood to cheer on the team. And if you go on a Friday, there's a post-game fireworks show all summer long. If sports is not your vibe, there's usually a concert or two happening each year. Only the biggest acts can fill the stadium, so think the likes of Beyoncé and Elton John. Any standout features or must-sees? There are great statues at the Centerfield Entrance, including bronze depictions of Hall of Famers Sandy Koufax and Jackie Robinson. Check the website to see if your tickets fall on one of the giveaway nights; you could go home with a bobblehead toy or a t-shirt included with the cost of your ticket. The stadium shop is full of items to purchase, like a variety of ball cap styles, t-shirts, water bottles, and novelty baseball bats. Was it easy to get around? The park is accessible for the most part, with elevators and smooth walkways. Arrive early, because it can be a bit tricky to figure out where you're supposed to go, but there are plenty of attendants there to help point you in the direction of the best entrance for your seats. If you want to avoid the traffic, there's a shuttle bus available from Union Station, but arrive very early for that as it takes a minute. You probably won't be able to find a seat on the bus, and it jerks around as you head up into the Chavez Ravine area where the ballpark is. Bring sunscreen, water, and snacks, but make sure your items are in a clear bag or they won't let them in. All said and done, what—and who—is this best for? This is a fun, relaxing outdoor activity in LA for everyone, whether you're a sports fan or not.

Bush teams up with notorious Trump foes to trash ‘colossal mistake' shuttering USAID

Former President George W. Bush joined up with former President Barack Obama and U2 singer Bono to comfort United States Agency for International Development employees Monday, while also taking shots at President Donald Trump and his administration for shuttering the agency plagued by accusations of fraud and abuse. 'Gutting USAID is a travesty, and it's a tragedy,' Obama said in a video that was shown to departing USAID employees Monday, according to the Associated Press. 'Because it's some of the most important work happening anywhere in the world.' Obama summed up the decision to shutter the agency as 'a colossal mistake,' and added that 'sooner or later, leaders on both sides of the aisle will realize how much you are needed.' Bush, Obama and Bono spoke to departing USAID employees Monday in a videoconference as the agency officially was shuttered following the Trump administration's reporting that it was overrun with alleged corruption and mismanagement. The videoconference did not include members of the media, with the Associated Press reviewing and reporting on clips of the conference later that day. 6 Former President George W. Bush attends a baseball game, May 15, 2025, in Arlington, Texas. AP USAID is an independent U.S. agency that was established under the Kennedy administration to administer economic aid to foreign nations. It was one of the first agencies investigated by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in early February for alleged mismanagement and government overspending, with DOGE's then-leader Elon Musk slamming the agency as 'a viper's nest of radical-left marxists who hate America.' USAID officially was absorbed by the State Department Tuesday. Bush, who overwhelmingly has shied away from publicly criticizing Trump, lamented in his recorded message to the staffers that the end of USAID marks an end to his administration's work rolling out an AIDS and HIV program that is credited with saving 25 million people nationwide. 6 Bono poses for photographers at the 78th international film festival, Cannes, southern France, May 17, 2025. Joel C Ryan/Invision/AP 'You've showed the great strength of America through your work — and that is your good heart,'' Bush told USAID staffers, according to the Associated Press. 'Is it in our national interests that 25 million people who would have died now live? I think it is, and so do you.' Bono of U2 fame recited a poem he wrote reflecting on USAID's closure and his claims that millions around the world will likely now die, according to the Associated Press. 'They called you crooks. When you were the best of us,' Bono said. Fox News Digital reached out to Obama's and Bush's respective offices Wednesday morning for additional comment, but did not receive responses. 6 Former President Barack Obama speaks at the Obama Foundation Democracy Forum, Dec. 5, 2024, in Chicago. AP Other longtime Trump foes, such as former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, thanked foreign service officers for their work before USAID's closure. 'In all my years of service, I found that foreign service officers and development professionals were among the most dedicated public servants I encountered,' Clinton posted to X Tuesday. 'Their work saves lives and makes the world safer. Today, and every day, I stand with them.' Obama and Bush overwhelmingly have remained tight-lipped on their views of Trump under his second administration, with both former presidents attending Trump's inauguration and not weighing in on the majority of Trump's policies. Obama has taken issue with Trump's 'big, beautiful bill,' which is clearing its final hurdles to passage and will fund Trump's agenda on social media, while Bush has consistently shied away from public rebukes of Trump in recent history. 6 USAID logo and U.S. flag are seen in this illustration taken April 23, 2025. REUTERS Bono previously has claimed that cuts to USAID would kill hundreds of thousands of people, and had slammed Trump in 2016 as 'potentially the worst idea that ever happened to America.' Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was serving as acting administrator of USAID, announced the State Department absorbed USAID's foreign assistance programs Tuesday after decades of failing to ensure the programs it funded actually supported America's interests. 'Beyond creating a globe-spanning NGO industrial complex at taxpayer expense, USAID has little to show since the end of the Cold War,' Rubio wrote in his announcement. 'Development objectives have rarely been met, instability has often worsened, and anti-American sentiment has only grown.' 6 A person carries a sign in support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) workers, as they carry their personal belongings after retrieving them from the USAID's headquarters in Washington, Feb. 27, 2025. AP 'This era of government-sanctioned inefficiency has officially come to an end,' he continued. 'Under the Trump Administration, we will finally have a foreign funding mission in America that prioritizes our national interests. As of July 1st, USAID will officially cease to implement foreign assistance. 'Foreign assistance programs that align with administration policies—and which advance American interests—will be administered by the State Department, where they will be delivered with more accountability, strategy, and efficiency.' The shuttering comes after DOGE gutted USAID as part of Trump's effort to remove waste, fraud and abuse from the federal government earlier in 2025. 6 Flowers and a sign are placed outside the headquarters of the U.S. Agency for International Development, or USAID, Feb. 7, 2025, in Washington. AP Trump repeatedly had touted DOGE's work uncovering fraud and mismanagement within the federal government, including in his March address before Congress celebrating that DOGE identified $22 billion in government 'waste,' including at USAID. 'Forty-five million dollars for diversity, equity and inclusion scholarships in Burma,' Trump said as he rattled off various examples of federal waste. 'Forty million to improve the social and economic inclusion of sedentary migrants. Nobody knows what that is. 'Eight million to promote LGBTQI+ in the African nation of Lesotho, which nobody has ever heard of. Sixty million dollars for indigenous peoples and Afro-Colombian empowerment in Central America. Sixty million. Eight million for making mice transgender.'

Lady Gaga And Elton John Insiders Address Rumor They Demanded $6M Each To Perform At Bezos' Wedding

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez's Venice wedding has finally come and gone, leaving behind wild rumors that plagued the lavish event. One of the biggest rumors was that music stars Elton John and Lady Gaga were approached to perform at the wedding, but that Bezos said "no" to a request for $6 million performance fee each. Now, insiders for Elton John and Lady Gaga have denied the claim, stating that Jeff Bezos never even asked the Grammy award winners to perform at his wedding. Before Bezos' wedding to Sanchez, a rumor had circulated that the Amazon founder had turned down an alleged demand by Gaga and John to be paid $6 million each to perform at his lavish nuptials. "Each wanted $6 million for a single night. Jeff said, 'Absolutely not,'" a source said at the time, per RealityTea. However, insiders for both Gaga and John have branded the rumor "laughable," telling TMZ that such a thing never happened as they were not approached to play the wedding, let alone request such a "gigantic fee." While the two music icons were not at the wedding, Bezos and Sanchez were still serenaded by top performers, such as "Burn" singer Ellie Goulding, who reportedly performed about four or five of her songs, and Andrea Bocelli's son, Mateo. With their wedding over, Bezos and Sanchez have reportedly departed Venice to kick off their honeymoon. Although the newlywed couple hasn't disclosed their exact plans, a source revealed that they would first stay in the Torcello area before heading to Nicelli Airport. From there, Bezos and Sánchez are expected to board a helicopter that will take them back to Bezos' $500 million superyacht, Koru, where they will set sail for Taormina in Sicily. According to The Mirror, the historic destination is said to be a favorite of the couple, who fell in love with it during a sailing trip around the region last year. In Taormina, they are expected to stay at the Four Seasons San Domenico Palace, the same hotel famously featured as a primary filming location in "The White Lotus" Season 2. Bezos and Sanchez's wedding was met with protests by Venetians. However, it seems the opulent event may have been beneficial for the Italian city. New reports claim that Venice was expected to generate over $1 billion from hosting the celebration. This figure reportedly accounts for nearly 68% of the city's annual tourism revenue, driven by extensive logistics arrangements for the couple and their guests, as well as hospitality services. As part of the wedding festivities, Bezos and Sanchez reserved dozens of water taxis, effectively booking out a large portion of the city's fleet. Guests also filled nearly all of Venice's top luxury hotels, including the Aman Hotel, where Bezos and Sánchez stayed, as well as the St. Regis, Gritti Palace, Cipriani, and Hotel Danieli. Given the massive figures, it is no wonder that Daniela Santanchè, Italy's Minister of Tourism, earlier called for activists to "abandon the controversy and focus on opportunities." "This is not just a private event but a concrete driving force for the entire sector," she said in a news release, per CNN. Venice has all it takes to transform it into an opportunity for relaunch and promotion." Before the wedding, Bezos made sure to spoil his bride with a jewelry set that cost an eye-watering sum. The gift was reportedly a diamond necklace from a high-profile jeweler, valued at $3 million to $5 million. "It's a diamond necklace that circles her neck with a large center stone and matching earrings," a source told Page Six. "You won't be able to miss this elegant diamond necklace as it's almost as massive as Jeff's superyacht," the source added about the expensive piece. "Lauren is thrilled with her blinding new necklace and earrings that take her already impressive collection up several notches." Sanchez didn't waste time updating her name across social media after tying the knot to Bezos. She now goes by Lauren Sanchez Bezos on her Instagram page. However, it remains unclear if the Emmy Award-winning journalist has also legally taken the billionaire's last name. The swift name-change doesn't come as a surprise, as Sanchez already made clear her excitement about becoming Mrs. Bezos during a 2023 interview with Vogue Magazine. When asked about taking Bezos's last name at the time, she asserted, "Uh, yes, one hundred percent. I am looking forward to being Mrs. Bezos." Shortly after the name update last Saturday, Sanchez shared the first look from the wedding, which appeared to have been held in a garden setting on Venice's island of San Giorgio Maggiore.
