NEW DELHI: The India Commercial Pilots' Association (ICPA) has slammed the "reckless and unfounded insinuation of pilot suicide" that has been doing the rounds after the preliminary report into AI 171 crash was made public on Saturday.
While not sharing the cockpit voice recorder transcript, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) report had this one line: "One of the pilots is heard asking the other why did he cutoff. The other pilot responded that he did not do so."
According to the report, three seconds after getting airborne from Ahmedabad on June 12, fuel supply to both engines of the Air India Boeing 787 operating as AI 171 got cut off.
The reason: fuel cutoff switches of the London-bound Dreamliner's engine 1 and 2 transitioned from 'run' to 'cutoff' position one after another with a time gap of a second.
ICPA, which is the union of erstwhile Indian Airlines, said in a statement issued Sunday: "We are deeply disturbed by speculative narratives, particularly the reckless and unfounded insinuation of pilot suicide. Let us be unequivocally clear: there is absolutely no basis for such a claim at this stage, and invoking such a serious allegation based on incomplete or preliminary information is not only irresponsible-it is deeply insensitive to the individuals and families involved.

"
Expressing their "unwavering support for the flight crew of Air India flight Al 171," the statement added: "Pilots undergo extensive psychological and professional screening, recurrent training, and operate under the highest standards of safety, responsibility, and mental fitness. To casually suggest pilot suicide in the absence of verified evidence is a gross violation of ethical reporting and a disservice to the dignity of the profession.
"
"As aviation professionals, we trust and respect the rigorous investigative protocols established by competent authorities. These inquiries are designed to uncover facts methodically and without bias. Until the official investigation is concluded and the final report is published, any speculation-especially of such a grave nature-is unacceptable and must be condemned.... The crew of Al 171 acted in line with their training and responsibilities under challenging conditions.
They deserve support-not vilification based on conjecture," it said.

Ghaziabad man gets insured amount for car stolen 22 years ago

Ghaziabad: Two decades after his brand-new car was stolen during a family trip, a Ghaziabad resident is finally on track to receive compensation, though partially, from his insurer. The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has asked Delhi-based National Insurance Company to pay Puneet Agrawal, whose car was stolen in Haridwar in April 2003, Rs 1.4 lakh, nearly 75% of the insured value, along with Rs 5,000 for litigation costs and the mental agony he endured. Agrawal had purchased the car on March 10, 2003, through ICICI Bank's Jhandewalan branch in Delhi and insured it the same day for Rs 1.9 lakh. Less than a month later, on April 6, the car was stolen from Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar during a family vacation. By early 2004, he had submitted all required documents, including a final closure report from Haridwar police and an order from the chief judicial magistrate confirming the theft. But instead of the timely settlement he expected, Agrawal faced a prolonged legal battle. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 첫 기부의 설레임을 담은 반지 굿네이버스 더 알아보기 Undo When the insurance company rejected his claim, arguing he had failed to secure the vehicle properly, Agrawal took the matter to the Ghaziabad DCDRC. However, the commission initially dismissed the case on jurisdictional grounds, prompting him to file an appeal with the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (SCDRC) in Lucknow in 2011. The SCDRC ruled earlier this year—on Feb 3, 2025—that the Ghaziabad DCDRC was the appropriate forum to hear the case. In its final ruling on July 9, the DCDRC bench, comprising president Praveen Kumar Jain and members RP Singh and Shailja Sachan, ruled in favour of Agrawal. The insurance company had argued that Agrawal had failed to take "adequate precautions" to protect his car and therefore his claim was not valid. But the commission cited the 2008 Supreme Court judgment in National Insurance Company Ltd vs Nitin Khandelwal case, which established that even in such cases, claims must be settled on a "non-standard" basis. Rejecting the insurer's blanket denial as a deficiency in service under the Consumer Protection Act, the commission directed the company to pay 75% of the insured amount, or Rs 1.4 lakh. The commission also clarified that the financing bank would have the first claim on the money if any loan amount was still outstanding, with the remainder to be disbursed to Agrawal. "It has taken 22 years and numerous legal hurdles, but I'm finally seeing closure," Agrawal told reporters.

Delhi High Court denies bail to cryptocurrency scam accused citing economic implications

New Delhi: Delhi High Court on Monday highlighted that dealings in cryptocurrency have profound implications on the country's economy by way of "dissolution of recognised money into the dark, unknown and untraceable money". Denying bail to a man accused of running a cryptocurrency-based scam, the court noted that a huge number of people had been defrauded. "The allegations against the accused in this multi-victim scam are quite serious, more so in light of his antecedents of involvement in as many as 13 more cases of similar nature," Justice Girish Kathpalia observed, rejecting the bail plea of the businessman in a cheating case related to cryptocurrency. The court directed Verma, accused in the case against the Dubai-based cryptocurrency company, Pluto Exchange, to surrender before the investigating officer or the trial court. In its order, the court said his act of collecting money even after the de-recognition of cryptocurrency showed mala fide action. It pointed out that the accused is alleged to have duped 61 investors after "painting a rosy picture" of getting them returns of 20-30% on their investments in cryptocurrency, a process which he continued against the gullible people even after the de-recognition of cryptocurrency. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? The court underlined multiple factors that convinced it to deny bail to Verma, such as the complexity and expanse of the economic crime alleged against him, the continuance of collection of investments in the business of cryptocurrency by Verma from credulous investors, "swayed by the mirage of 20% to 30% profit assured by the accused/applicant, despite the de-recognition of cryptocurrency; blatant misuse of the mediation system by the accused/applicant by alluring execution of mediation settlements and not complying with the same despite adjournments across more than two years before the predecessor benches. " The court also noted that the accused was a "serious flight risk" and the probe against him is still on, with more and more victims coming to light.

West Bengal: Cabinet okays job to families of Balasore train tragedy victims

The West Bengal Cabinet on Monday gave the go-ahead to a proposal to give a job each to the families of the 2023 Balasore train accident victims who hailed from the state, officials said. Thirteen of the 296 persons who died in the accident were residents of West Bengal. The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the state secretariat. The Cabinet decided to give them home guards jobs in the police department. In one of the country's worst railway disasters, Chennai-bound Coromandel Express rammed into a stationary goods train at Bahanaga Bazar station in Balasore, Odisha, on the evening of June 2, 2023. Minutes later, the coaches derailed in the collision were hit from the opposite direction by the Yeshvantpur Express that was going towards Howrah. The Cabinet also announced to allocate 40 acres land to Titagarh Rail Systems Limited for extension of the existing facility to manufacture Vande Bharat train coaches. The land will be given to the rail coach factory on a lease of 99 years for Rs 126 crore. The plot is located adjacent to TRSL's current 34-acre plant in Uttarpara in Kotrung and Bhadreswar in the Hooghly district. The Cabinet decided to change the provision of widow and old age allowances. So far, the social welfare office was in charge of the approval of the allowances in the Kolkata Corporation. But from now, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation commissioner can approve the allowances. The administration has argued that the process will be faster, simpler and transparent under the new system. The beneficiaries will get quick allowances in this process, the state government claimed. Speaking at the meeting, the CM expressed concern over the harassment of Bengali-speaking people in other states. Stating that such injustice cannot be tolerated, she said peaceful protests need to be organised. A minister said, 'In the meeting, the CM asked ministers to take out with rallies in the districts to support Bengali migrant workers who were being humiliated in the other states. She also said on July 21, the TMC will organise the Martyrs Day rally was done in the past.' — PTI inputs
