Red Wings' Lucas Raymond Surges To No. 2 in Under-23 Scoring
The consensus No. 1 overall selection in that season's Draft was forward Alexis Lafreniere, a star with Rimouski Océanic of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The visions that danced in the heads of Red Wings fans everywhere of Lafreniere donning the Winged Wheel were dashed when Detroit not only didn't get the first overall pick, but had to watch the New York Rangers, a playoff team, select him.
The Red Wings then turned to their Plan B and selected forward Lucas Raymond, who was playing in the Swedish Hockey League with Frölunda HC. And by all reasonable measurements, Detroit's rotten Draft Lottery Luck in 2020 turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

Raymond has become one of the best young players in the NHL after bursting onto the scene as a rookie, along with Moritz Seider, in the 2021-22 season.

He scored 23 goals with 34 assists in his rookie season, and while he experienced a dip in production known as the dreaded "sophomore slump" that multiple players endure, he roared back immediately.
Raymond caught fire in the second half of the 2023-24 season, finishing with 31 goals and 41 assists for a then career-high 72 points. None were bigger than his pair of goals in Detroit's home finale against the Montreal Canadiens to tie the score late in regulation and then give the Red Wings the overtime victory, keeping their postseason hopes alive.
His output in the recently-completed 2024-25 NHL season was even higher, scoring 27 goals with 53 assists to set a new career-high in points with 80.

He was the highest-scoring player in the NHL aged 23 or younger, and he also became the first Swedish-born player aged 23 or younger to reach 80 points since Nicklas Bäckström in 2009-10 with the Washington Capitals.
Additionally, Raymond's 254 career points are 61 higher than the 193 career points for Lafreniere, and are the second-most by any active NHL player aged 23 or younger, behind only Ottawa Senators forward Tim Stützle.
The Red Wings recognized the special talent that they had on their hands when Raymond was extended for eight years last offseason, and he's in Hockeytown for the long haul.

Reports: NFL, NFLPA covered up fake injury grievance ruling
The NFL and NFLPA concealed another grievance ruling from earlier this year, according to reports from Pro Football Talk and the "Pablo Torre Finds Out" podcast. Recently, ESPN reported that the NFL and NFLPA agreed to conceal findings of a grievance filed by the players union, in which an arbitrator found that the league had encouraged its owners to engage in collusion. On July 17, Pablo Torre and Mike Florio revealed that the NFL won a different grievance ruling against the NFLPA earlier this year. The league originally filed the grievance in September 2023 accusing the union of encouraging players to fake injuries. It came as a result of JC Tretter's comments months earlier alluding that faking injuries was a way for a player to avoid fines in contract negotiation holdouts. NFL COLLUSION GRIEVANCE: League and players union agreed to keep arbitration findings secret, per report Said Tretter at the time: "I think we've seen issues — now, I don't think anybody would say they were fake injuries, but we've seen players who didn't want to be where they currently are, have injuries that made them unable to practice and play, but you're not able to get fined, and you're not able to be punished for not reporting. So there are issues like that. I don't think I'm allowed to ever recommend that, at least publicly, but I think each player needs to find a way to build up leverage to try to get a fair deal. And that's really what all these guys are looking for, is to be compensated fairly." According to Florio and Torre's reporting, a Feb. 20 decision from a non-injury grievance arbitrator gave the NFL a win following their complaint. A statement the league wrote to Pro Football Talk read: "The Arbitrator upheld the Management Council's grievance in its entirety and found that Mr. Tretter's statements violated the CBA by improperly encouraging players to fake injury." The statement went on to clarify that the NFL did not allege any specific player faked an injury and that the league's issue was with Tretter and the union potentially encouraging the behavior. The league alleged the NFLPA violated an article in the two parties' collective bargaining agreement that prohibits the union from, as Florio put it, "engag[ing] in de facto, individualized strikes." Neither party disclosed the outcome of the decision publicly in the immediate aftermath of the NFL's arbitration victory. Florio suggested in his article that the cover-up may have been the result of a behind-closed-doors agreement. If the NFLPA agreed not to publicize the findings from a collusion grievance that found the NFL encouraged owners to engage in collusion to keep down player contract values, the league would not expose their grievance win regarding fake injuries. How good will Alabama be in 2025, and will it be enough to carry them back to the College Football Playoff or the SEC Championship Game? USA TODAY Sports college football analyst Paul Myerberg has made an early evaluation of the Crimson Tide and the rest of the SEC with just over a month remaining until the 2025 college football season kicks off. In his preseason SEC football power rankings this week, the veteran college football scribe has Alabama at No. 3 behind Texas and Georgia -- the two teams who met in last year's conference title game. Myerberg said of the Crimson Tide: "It won't hurt to have slightly lower expectations and a somewhat softer spotlight on Kalen DeBoer and the Crimson Tide after winning nine games in his debut. Ty Simpson is expected to take over under center and will operate behind a very strong offensive line with plenty of weapons at his disposal. The defense is the best in the front seven. Overall, this is a very talented team capable of winning the SEC and the national title." Anything related to "lower expectations" for Alabama is highly debatable; expectations for the Crimson Tide are always high. That was true long before Nick Saban, as previous coaches at Alabama can attest all too well. Still, Myerberg's overall point is solid. Alabama does have playmakers -- Ryan Williams being the most explosive on offense, with LT Overton, Tim Keenan, Deontae Lawson, Domani Jackson and others on defense -- that could put them back in the SEC title game or even the national championship if things break their way.
