Aussie council's bold new plan to combat $1.5 million issue at iconic graveyard

Aussie council's bold new plan to combat $1.5 million issue at iconic graveyard

In rapidly growing cities like Sydney, real estate is scarce. And when it comes to cemetery space and burial plots, even more so.
Across the country, the lack of supply appears to be worst in NSW, where a 2023 audit conducted by the state's planning department found there was a "critical shortage" of gravesites around Sydney. According to the audit, multiple faith-run cemeteries in particular are set to run out of burial space within just a few years, reflecting the dire state of the shortage.
In the city's east, Waverley Cemetery — known as one of Australia's most beautiful for its seaside location and notable Victorian and Edwardian monuments — is also running low on plots. In addition, due to its coastal location on top of the cliffs at Bronte, it also continues to cop a battering from the weather, wearing down numerous structures.
Waverley Council itself said that there is a large number of "significant and historic monuments and vaults that continue to fall into disrepair". It states that at present, maintenance costs have reached $1.5 million per year.
Now, in response, the council is working on a "memorial wall" for ashes, which it hopes will significantly reduce gravesite congestion, while allowing extra opportunity for those who wish to be buried there. The plans include 20 memorial walls parallel to the existing sandstone wall of Quinn Road. Each wall is set to contain 36 ash interment niches that people can lease long-term.
Speaking to Yahoo News Australia, a Waverley spokesman said council "wants to sustain the financial viability of the cemetery now and into the future", and "niche walls will help us achieve this".
"The memorial wall represents the most effective and sensitive way to meet these constraints," he said.
Mock images show dozens of letter-box-looking cubes embedded along the walls of the cemetery, not too dissimilar from what you'd see at the post office. As for the cost, prospective occupants, or their loved ones, can expect to fork out $8,540, according to council.
"As per council's fees and charges, the current fee for a single ash interment niche is $8,540, which includes the niche space, the interment fee, and a bronze plaque," the spokesperson said.
Waverley Cemetery currently charges $4,536 for a standard coffin or casket interment on weekdays, with additional fees for weekend services ($622). The purchase of a 25-year renewable interment right (essentially the burial plot) costs $28,330, according to the 2024–2025 official price list.
For those opting to inter ashes instead of a full burial, the standard interment fee is $1,270, with niche wall and memorial garden options ranging from $4,200 to $26,480, depending on the location and exclusivity. While these prices may seem higher due to the sought-after location, they're cheaper than many recently advertised online.
Last year, Yahoo found cemetery plots being advertised on Facebook Marketplace for tens of thousands of dollars, with some graves — including in cemeteries such as Waverley — being marketed at upwards of $50,000. We saw several listed with asking prices between $70,000 and $100,000 at the time in 2024.
The trend has continued in 2025, and as of Thursday, June 26, a plot at Waverley is listed for an astonishing $165,000.
Council hopes the memorial wall will ease some of the demand, stating that it cannot expand the cemetery any further. "Waverley Council has no plans to expand the boundaries of Waverley Cemetery, as we are completely constrained by the built environments that surround the cemetery," the spokesperson explained.
"There are limited sites currently available for burial. Council also faces rising costs of maintenance.
In April, Sydney's first new Crown cemetery in over 85 years opened in Varroville, offering 136,000 burial plots. Additional cemeteries are also planned in locations such as Lidcombe to help address the ongoing shortage of burial space.

Memorial walls with ash niches have already proven popular along the cemetery's northern edge, and demand for more remains strong, according to Waverley. The development is set to cost $2.3 million.
"The memorialisation walls are envisaged to be bespoke in design and a reflection of the heritage significance of the cemetery, consistent with the late Victorian and Federation era headstones, monuments and other infrastructure," council states online.
"The project will also include the installation of new benches and minor landscaping."
Notable inhabitants of the cemetery include Henry Lawson (1867–1922), one of Australia's most famous poets and short story writers, Dorothea Mackellar (1885–1968), another celebrated poet, and Sir James Martin (1820–1886), former premier of New South Wales.

The uncertain fate of TikTok began when Trump signed an executive order to extend a deadline to ban the app from US-based app stores. The initial extension came shortly after Trump took office for his second term in January and was later pushed back another 75 days to April. The decision was delayed once again in June, but for an extra 90 days instead, for a new mid-September deadline. As the future of TikTok remains in a state of uncertainty, Trump said the extensions were "no big deal" during the interview with Fox News . More than 170 million active US users are awaiting a final decision on TikTok, which is developed by the Beijing-based ByteDance that's facing pressure to either sell its app or have it banned due to data privacy and "national security" concerns.

How to Choose the Right Domestic Scaffolding Company in Manchester

When planning any kind of home renovation, repair, or extension, safety and structural support are essential—especially when working at height. That's where choosing the right scaffolding provider becomes critical. With a wide range of companies out there, finding the perfect partner for Domestic Scaffolding in Manchester can feel overwhelming. But the right decision can streamline your project, ensure safety, and provide peace of mind throughout the process. This guide breaks down exactly what to look for when hiring a scaffolding company for your home project in Manchester—whether it's a roof repair, chimney restoration, or full home renovation. Before contacting scaffolding companies, clearly define what your project requires. Is it a small-scale roof repair or a major multi-storey extension? The size, complexity, and duration of your project all influence the type of scaffolding you need. Some domestic jobs require basic access towers, while others call for custom-built platforms. A professional scaffolding partner will assess your home's structure, access limitations, and environmental factors before suggesting a suitable solution. In domestic settings, especially where families and neighbors are nearby, safety is absolutely critical. A trusted company for Domestic Scaffolding in Manchester will operate under strict health and safety regulations. Look for companies that: Are CHAS or CITB accredited Follow Work at Height regulations Offer detailed risk assessments Use PPE and fall prevention systems Conduct regular on-site safety checks A good scaffolding provider should treat your home with the same care as a commercial property—after all, lives depend on it. Manchester's neighborhoods are a mix of old terraces, new-build estates, and Victorian homes. That diversity means one-size-fits-all scaffolding won't cut it. Choose a provider with local experience—one who understands building styles in your area and is familiar with Manchester's building codes and permit requirements. This knowledge speeds up installation and avoids legal headaches. Cost is important, but beware of overly cheap quotes. Some companies may cut corners on materials or safety measures, which can end up costing more in the long run. Ask each scaffolding provider for an itemized quote. A reliable company offering Domestic Scaffolding in Manchester will be upfront about: Daily or weekly hire rates Erection and dismantling charges Site inspection fees Transport costs Extra charges for delays or changes Avoid surprises by ensuring all terms are clearly explained before signing a contract. The best domestic scaffolding companies don't just drop off the frames and leave. They offer a full range of services including: Free site surveys Custom design for unique structures Flexible hire durations Regular maintenance visits Emergency response and repairs If your project changes or extends, a versatile company can adjust quickly, saving you time and hassle. High-quality scaffolding isn't just about appearance—it's about structural safety. You want equipment that is clean, rust-free, and well-maintained. Ask these questions: How often is the equipment inspected and replaced? Is the scaffolding galvanised and weather-resistant? Can they provide visual proof of equipment quality? A company offering Domestic Scaffolding in Manchester with a strong focus on quality will happily show you their inventory and maintenance logs. While experience and equipment matter, how a company treats its customers is just as important. You'll likely be interacting with scaffolders and project managers throughout your home improvement process—so they should be courteous, communicative, and reliable. Indicators of excellent customer service include: Quick response times Willingness to explain processes clearly Regular progress updates Respect for your property and neighbors Clean site conditions post-dismantling A good domestic scaffolding company prioritizes minimal disruption and maximum satisfaction. Word travels fast in local communities. Before signing with any company, check reviews on Google, Facebook, or industry directories. Speak to neighbors or friends who have used scaffolding services recently. Positive testimonials, especially those mentioning timely delivery, safety, and professionalism, are strong green flags. If the same company name keeps coming up with praise, they're worth shortlisting. Choosing a scaffolding partner for your home renovation or repair doesn't have to be complicated—but it must be careful. The right choice ensures safety, efficiency, and a smooth workflow from start to finish. Look beyond price and consider local experience, safety credentials, equipment quality, and overall customer service. When it comes to Domestic Scaffolding in Manchester, don't settle for average—choose a team that respects your time, your home, and your goals. For many homeowners, Fisher Scaffolding has proven to be a trusted name, offering safe, reliable, and tailor-made solutions for a variety of domestic projects. Take the time to choose wisely, and you'll thank yourself later with a project that's supported from the ground up—both literally and professionally. TIME BUSINESS NEWS

Hilton unveils first Tapestry Collection hotel in Northern Ireland

Hilton has unveiled The Marcus Portrush, a Tapestry Collection hotel, marking the brand's foray into Northern Ireland. The property offers 80 rooms and is set in a location along the North Atlantic coastline. It is housed in a restored Victorian building that has been in the area for over 85 years, operating as a hotel and artisan bakery from 1895 until the 1980s. The £11m ($15.08m) renovation project has maintained the building's historic character, encompassing original mosaic signage and floor mosaics. The hotel's opening is strategically timed to coincide with the 153rd Open Championship, which will be held at the nearby Royal Portrush Golf Club on 13–20 July 2025. This will be the golf tournament's first return to Northern Ireland since 2019. Hilton UK & Ireland senior vice-president Stephen Cassidy said: 'Northern Ireland has seen a strong rise in tourism in recent years, drawing travellers from around the world to experience its unique charm. 'As the only internationally branded hotel in Portrush, The Marcus Portrush, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, offers high-quality accommodation with an authentic local touch, making it the perfect base for visitors eager to explore all that Northern Ireland has to offer.' The development of The Marcus Portrush is a result of a franchise agreement with Andras House, the largest hotel group in Northern Ireland. The new hotel is expected to contribute to the local economy, with an estimated £1.1m in annual visitor spending and the creation of more than 40 permanent jobs. Earlier this year, Hilton also confirmed a franchise agreement with Loughview Leisure Group for a DoubleTree hotel in Belfast City Centre, Northern Ireland.
