Girl's family give heartbreaking update after she was severely injured in Miami boat crash that killed her 3 young friends

The family of one of three survivors from a horrific Miami boat crash has provided a heartbreaking update on the young girl's recovery. Calena Areyana Gruber, seven, was onboard a sailboat with five other campers at the Miami Youth Sailing Foundation summer camp and their 19-year-old counselor, when it collided with a 60-foot barge being pulled by a tugboat in Biscayne Bay on July 28. The impact from the crash left the 17-foot Hobie Getaway sinking underneath the barge, but Gruber was able to swim out to save her life, an attorney representing the family told the Miami Herald. She was rushed to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition, but has since been released and is now recovering at home. Her family, though, says they still have a long road ahead of them as Gruber continues to have 'open lacerations and scrapes' all over her body. 'This little 7-year-old girl is devastated by what happened, both physically and emotionally,' attorney Justin B. Shapiro said in a statement, according to NBC South Florida. 'She was acutely aware that she could have died and she repeats that to her parents, and so it's going to be a long and difficult road for her. 'Her parents, of course, are committed to getting her all of the help and care that she needs,' he added, 'but seven-year-old children are not equipped to deal with this kind of trauma and so it's going to be a lot of work.' Still, he said, Gruber's parents - Karina Gruber Moreno and Enrique Areyan Viqueira - 'know that we could have been having a very different conversation today' and 'know that we're fortunate to still have Calena with us.' Two other young girls onboard the sailboat, Erin Co, 13, and seven-year-old Mila Yankelevich, died on their way to Ryder Trauma Center, with a Medical Examiner declaring they died of accidental drowning despite wearing life jackets. A third girl, Arielle Mazi Bucham, 10, was rushed to the trauma center in critical condition alongside Gruber, but has since succumbed to her injuries. The camp counselor and another girl, aged 12, walked away unharmed. In their own statement on Monday, Gruber Moreno and Areyan Viqueira said they are 'deeply moved and incredibly grateful for the outpouring of prayers and kindness we have received from the community.' They added that they were heartbroken for the families who lost their daughters in the crash, as they shared a photo of Calena arriving to camp on the fateful day. 'This is a deeply harrowing reminder of how suddenly and senselessly life can change,' the family's statement read. 'In an instant, what should have been a day of joy and connection on the water turned into a source of unimaginable grief,' the couple said, as they 'respectfully' asked for privacy 'as we focus on healing and processing this difficult situation.' The United States Coast Guard is now continuing to investigate what may have caused the fatal collision. Officials have already determined that both boat captains' toxicology reports came back negative, the U.S. Coast Guard confirmed on Friday. 'I can confirm alcohol and drug testing was completed for both individuals onboard the tug and barge as well as the sailboat operator. All results were negative,' a spokesperson with the federal agency said. Authorities also previously stated that the barge was supporting construction work in the Miami Beach area before the fatal collision. It was transporting a large crane parked in front of the pilot house at the time of the collision, leading to speculation the crane may have obstructed the tugboat operator's vision, the Herald reports. A loophole in Coast Guard boating regulations may have also contributed to the crash. According to the regulations, commercial tugboats that are under 26 feet in length do not require an operator to be a licensed captain. Coast Guard officials have not yet confirmed how large the tugboat was, but a review of photos and an analysis by two AI tools estimate the ship was under 26 feet. The sunken sailboat is seen after being recovered from the water The Coast Guard's navigation rules also stipulate that sailboats generally have the right of way over motorboats - but must yield to a vessel that is 'restricted in its ability to maneuver.' It is now believed Coast Guard officials will work to determine whether the tugboat was restricted in its movement as part of the investigation. Yet Miami Yacht Club member Katie Flood-Reiss has said that the sailboat's 19-year-old instructor would have had no chance of evading the barge in the bay. 'In those conditions, with almost no wind, it would have been impossible to turn that sailboat around quickly,' she explained. The investigation into the fatal collision may now take several months to complete. In the meantime, Gruber's family is pushing for changes to prevent similar accidents from happening in the future. Attorney Shapiro noted that waterways in Florida, the boating capital of the world, have become a 'lawless sanctuary.' 'Our clients want answers of course, but first and foremost our clients want this to never happen again,' he said. 'We need to shine a spotlight on this so that we can learn every possible lesson from this. 'We cannot have this collision in vain, we need to learn from it and we need to make our waterways safer by any means necessary,' he urged.

Manny Pacquiao, Teofimo Lopez: Who will Ryan Garcia fight next after shock loss to Rolly Romero?

Ryan Garcia was on the wrong end of one of boxing 's biggest upsets earlier this year when he was outpointed by Rolando 'Rolly' Romero' in New York. The charismatic American delivered a lacklustre performance after being knocked down in the second round and has since undergone hand surgery. But he has recently posted footage of himself back in training and is eyeing a return to the ring before the end of the year. Which begs the question: who will be in the opposite corner? Let's take a look at some of the names in the mix to take on Garcia next. Rolando Romero rematch Despite being away from the ring for over a year, Garcia was a big favourite to beat Romero when they faced each other in May. However, he simply never got going and was comfortably beaten on points. Romero has since been upgraded to full champion status by the WBA after Jaron Ennis vacated his title to move up to super-welterweight. Garcia has never held a world title but could change that if he takes the rematch with Romero and wins. Talks have reportedly been held over a second fight between the pair, yet Garcia has claimed his promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, wants to give the Romero title shot to another of his Golden Boy fighters. 'After the Romero fight, they gave me the worst offer you can ever imagine,' Garcia recently told The Ring. 'It was a bulls*** offer. And then Oscar tried to take my rematch with Rolly and give it to Raul Curiel. 'I've been trying to get the Rolly rematch, and now you want to give it to another fighter?' With Garcia and De La Hoya seemingly at loggerheads, the Romero rematch is currently hanging in the balance. Manny Pacquiao Garcia has now stepped up to welterweight but is not the biggest name at 147lbs. That title goes to the recently-returned Manny Pacquiao. The Filipino icon stepped back between the ropes for the first time in four years to draw with Mario Barrios last month as he narrowly missed out on becoming a world champion at 46. Pacquiao impressed in his comeback fight but Garcia is convinced he would deliver a one-sided beating if he shared the ring with the eight-division world champion. He told The Ring: 'I've been interested in fighting the legendary Manny Pacquiao for a while now. It's something that you dream of. There have been talks in the past of us fighting, and then it fell through. 'There is a history there. I am always up for the challenge; I would be lying if I said I am not interested. If Manny wants to throw down, let's do it. 'I know that I would present a lot of problems for Pacquiao. I would dominate him. I would capitalise on his mistakes better than other guys. I would knock him out like Juan Manuel Marquez – all due respect to the legend Manny, though." Garcia is 20 years younger than Pacquiao and this could be a passing of the torch moment. It may also be a chance for Pacquiao to prove his greatness once more, while both men would be in line for a major payday. Do not be surprised if this fight gets made. Teofimo Lopez Garcia has been talking up the prospect of fighting Romero or Pacquiao, but his promoter seems to have other ideas. Oscar De La Hoya has named Teofimo Lopez as an alternative opponent, with the 140lb world champion potentially stepping up to welterweight in the near future. Asked whether he liked the idea of Garcia running it back with Romero, De La Hoya said: 'No, I actually don't, because the first fight was a dull fight. 'I believe there's other big fights we can make with the likes of Teofimo and other fighters.' Garcia and Lopez are two of the most outspoken fighters in boxing today and the trash talk in the build-up would be must-watch. They also have crowd-friendly styles when at their best, with Garcia arguably having the edge in power while Lopez can outbox anyone, making it an intriguing matchup. Devin Haney rematch Devin Haney already has his next fight scheduled as he is due to face Brian Norman Jr for the WBO welterweight title in November. But if Garcia wants more time off to recover from his hand injury, setting this rematch up for the early part of 2026 could be a realistic prospect. Should Haney beat Norman Jr, he would become a three-weight world champion and would be firmly back on track after losing to Garcia last year before the bout was subsequently ruled a no contest after Garcia failed a drugs test. There is bad blood between the pair after their epic first fight which saw Garcia knock Haney down three times. They looked set for a rematch later this year only for Garcia to lose to Romero, while Haney failed to impress during his shutout points win over Jose Ramirez on the same night. Right now, the return fight does not appear to be on the table. But a Haney victory in November could change all that, with interest likely to ramp up for the arch-rivals to settle their feud once and for all. Brandon Pfaadt wins 11th as D-backs take down Padres

August 5 - Tyler Locklear and Alek Thomas homered, Brandon Pfaadt tied a career high with his 11th victory, and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the San Diego Padres 6-2 in Phoenix on Monday. Corbin Carroll and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. had two hits and two RBIs apiece as the Diamondbacks extended their winning streak to three games following a six-game losing streak that precipitated their trade deadline moves. Locklear, obtained from Seattle in the Eugenio Suarez deadline deal, hit his first homer in his fourth game in Arizona. Thomas homered in the ninth and had his fourth straight multi-hit game. Jackson Merrill and Jake Cronenworth had two of the Padres' six hits and both RBIs. The Padres had won seven of eight. Pfaadt (11-7) gave up two runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings, leaving after Cronenworth's single made it 5-2 in the sixth. He struck out four and walked three in his second victory over the Padres this season. He was 11-10 last year. Luis Arraez was 0-for-3 with a walk, ending his career-high 16-game hitting streak. He struck out swinging against Pfaadt in the fifth. Kyle Backhus pitched two innings for his first career save. JP Sears (7-10) gave up five runs on 10 hits in five innings in his first start for the Padres after being obtained at the deadline. He struck out four and walked one. The Diamondbacks scored in each of the first four innings off Sears and led 5-1 after five. Gurriel followed singles by Ketel Marte and Carroll with an RBI single in the first, and Carroll's sacrifice fly in the second made it 2-0. Merrill and Machado wired two-out doubles with two outs in the third, the first hits off Pfaadt, to make it 2-1. Locklear's homer with one out in the third was measured at 393 feet for a 3-1 lead. His previous two homers came in his 16-game look with the Mariners last June. Carroll and Gurriel drove in runs in the fourth to make it 5-1. --Field Level Media
