Lucy Bronze: England will give full support to Portugal after Diogo Jota's death
Bronze, who was born in Berwick-Upon-Tweed to a Portuguese father and an English mother, said the Lionesses were stunned when word travelled through the camp in Zurich, where they are preparing to open their title defence against France on Saturday.

'Yeah it definitely shocked all the squad when we woke up this morning and the news started to spread,' said Bronze, who will be competing in her fourth consecutive Euros and seventh major tournament.
'Obviously we have a lot of Liverpool fans in our team and football fans, but for people in general, everyone is just thinking of them – him and his brother. They were so young as well. We have seen all the messages on social media and stuff so you can tell what a great guy he has been. It's just really sad and we were shocked by the news, really.'
A moment of silence will be observed at all of Thursday and Friday's matches in memory of Jota and his brother Andre Silva.
Bronze added: 'We'll be watching the games tonight and Portugal play their first game against Spain and I know there will be a minute's silence held before that game.
'I think everyone in an England shirt and everyone in the tournament will be supporting the Portuguese team because they will be a lot closer to this than we are.
'It is just a really sad moment for everyone involved in football, knowing what a great guy he is and what an amazing year he's had – not just in football, but he got married a few weeks ago and he's got some little kids. It's just so sad.'
A Lionesses statement read: 'We are devastated at the tragic loss of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva. It is truly difficult to comprehend.
'The Lionesses send our heartfelt condolences to Diogo's family and friends, and all the players, staff and fans connected to Liverpool FC, his former clubs and the Portugal national teams.
'We stand beside the Portuguese team here in Switzerland and the whole football family in honouring Diogo and Andre's memory.'

Marcus Trescothick says England ‘not stupid enough' to dismiss draw
In three years since Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum took over as captain and coach, England have become the masters of all-or-nothing cricket and turned the draw into an endangered species. There has been just one in 37 games since the advent of 'Bazball' – a rain-shortened Ashes clash in Manchester – with Stokes going on the record on numerous occasions with his disdain for stalemates. It would be fantastical for England to harbour realistic ideas of turning their overnight score of 72 for three into a winning score of 608 on Sunday – not mention a world record by the small matter of 190 runs. Trescothick was careful not to squash the prospect entirely but broke what has become a minor taboo in the camp by recognising that avoiding defeat could be an acceptable result. 'We're always trying to be as positive as we can, but we all appreciate it's a hell of a lot of runs to try and score,' he said. 'We need 536 tomorrow…I don't think we've seen scoring rates like that. I don't think we use that sort of (defensive) language, that's not the sort of changing room we are. But we are not naive. 'If you get to the point where you can draw the game, of course, we're not stupid enough to think that you have to just win or lose. There are three results possible in every game that you play. 'This has kind of been built up away from what the changing room messages are. I think there is a perception of what you think goes on in the changing room, but we obviously understand it a little bit more.' The levels of faith among England fans have risen so much that the Hollies Stand stood as one to a chorus of 'stand up if you still believe', even after India began dismantling the top order on the fourth evening. 'We were all stood up in the changing room,' Trescothick said with a smile. 'We have done some things in our time. We are different to how we've done things before, so we'll see what happens.' India surprised many onlookers by setting the target at such an outlandish level, delaying a declaration many felt would come long before Shubman Gill belatedly called time on the innings at 427 for six. Bowling coach Morne Morkel admitted the timing had been a matter of debate but feels the English appetite for embracing unlikely chases will still remain. Stumps on Day 4 in Edgbaston! A magnificent day for #TeamIndia comes to an end 🙌 India need 7⃣ wickets on the final day to win the 2nd Test Scorecard ▶️ — BCCI (@BCCI) July 5, 2025 'We did talk about it a lot during the day, I guess if a team does score 500 plus on the final day they deserve to win,' he said. 'Harry Brook said in the media the other day that they'd go at anything we set for them, so I think we're in for an exciting day. 'Harry is a guy who likes to take the game on and he's an entertainer. That's their style. If they're happy to take it on, that's great for the game.'

Rangers newbie Thelo Aasgaard opens up on Liverpool education, playing with Haaland & why he ALWAYS liked Russell Martin
THELO AASGAARD came through the ranks at Anfield, weathered the storm in English football's third tier and scored on his international debut - alongside Erling Haaland. Now he wants to take his career to the next level at Rangers, and admits new head coach Russell Martin was a huge pull for him to come to Scottish football. 3 Thelo Aasgaard has given his first interview since arriving in Scotland 3 He joins Rangers on a four-year contract The 23-year-old signed for Gers on a four-year deal from Luton Town for a fee in the region of £3.5million. He became Martin's fifth signing of the summer and perhaps the most exciting yet. The Norwegian international promises to bring flair and attacking intent to Ibrox, and in his first interview since arriving in Glasgow he spoke about how as soon as he knew the Light Blues were interested, his mind was made up. Speaking to Rangers TV, Aasgaard said: "I'm delighted to be here. It's been quite a few days waiting for it but I'm really happy to get it over the line. "When I heard (about Rangers' interest) I was over the moon. I've played against the manager a few times and I've always seen myself in his team. "It was quite an easy decision to be fair. I love the amount of games here, the stature of the club and that itself is enough. "I think just having the trust from the manager is really important and just being here one day, I can already see he wants me to express myself in his system and I'm really looking forward to play a part. "I remember when we played his Swansea teams, we never really touched the ball! "I always thought it'd be fun to play in that sort of team." Aasgaard qualifies for Norway due to the fact his father is from there but he himself was born in Liverpool, and that's also where his pro football journey started. New Rangers chiefs Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe's first interview He was in the Anfield youth system for five years before leaving to join Wigan Athletic in order to play first team football. It was a decision that worked out as Aasgaard racked up over 150 appearances for the Latics, building a reputation for himself as a goalscoring midfielder in League One. He said: "I played for Liverpool for five years. "I was a young kid, 14, moved to Wigan, and kind of developed through the academy there and made my debut when I was 18. "It was four or five years of progression, really. It kind of started off quite raw, playing a lot of games, but just finding my feet. "And then coming into the age of 19, 20, I really started to impose myself on our team. We won the league and won it well and got promoted, and it was a chance to show myself in the championship. "I think I did quite well, although we got relegated. But last season and the season before was really where I started to step into my own body and really become the player I am. "I grew a lot of confidence and scored some goals." Aasgaard signed for Luton in the January transfer window last season as the Hatters looked to desperately cling on to their Championship status. While they ultimately couldn't fend off the threat of relegation, Aasgaard left a mark on Kenilworth Road with fans and boss Matt Bloomfield sad to see him leave. Aasgaard said: "I went there to try and help them, and unfortunately, it didn't go as we planned. "But, you know, I'd like to think I gave my all, and I loved my time there. Loved every minute." Whilst at Luton, Aasgaard made his debut for Norway in a World Cup qualifier against Moldova. As first caps go it was a dream, as he scored the third goal in a 5-0 win. Also on the scoresheet that night? A certain Erling Haaland. Martin Odegaard captained the side that evening too, playing in midfield alongside Aasgaard. "They really took me in well," said Aasgaard. "To be fair, I feel really part of the group. We've got a top, top group. We've had a strong start to the World Cup qualifiers. "So, yeah, to play in the World Cup next year is a big goal for me. "Hopefully I can show the manager that I'm ready with some performances here." Not only does he want to show the national team manager what he's capable of right away, but Aasgaard is keen for the Rangers fans to see what he's all about. He said: "I feel at home already. The facilities are fantastic. It's a really good change in me. I can't wait. "It just feels like the right thing in my career. To be playing in front of some amazing fans at an amazing stadium, it's what I've been dreaming of. "I'd say I have a bit of flair, I'm full of confidence and not afraid to shoot from distance. "I like to link up with my teammates and form connections at the top of the pitch. "I like to be part of the build-up phase as well as getting in the box and getting my goals." 3 Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page
