Steve Erceg's coaches get creative after Brandon Moreno figures out UFC Mexico City gameplan

Independent31-03-2025
While Steve Erceg fell to a decision defeat against Brandon Moreno on Saturday, he and his team were able to show off some impressive adjustments along the way.
Erceg suffered a unanimous-decision loss to Moreno at UFC Mexico City, as the latter –fighting on home soil – earned scorecards of 49-46 from all three judges.
Those scores do not fully convey the strength of Erceg's showing, however. The rounds were closely fought, and each flyweight's striking made for an intriguing, technical battle.
What's more, Erceg's team exhibited creativity in trying to combat Moreno, when they realised the former two-time champion could seemingly hear their tactical advice.
'It's very clear Moreno is listening to us,' Erceg's coach told the Australian between rounds. 'So, when we call body work, I want head work; when I call head work, I want body work.
'So, you just basically do whatever the f*** you want [in terms of specific strikes], whatever is there, but work on the opposite – because he's very much listening to us.'
Erceg, 29, emerged from the bout with credit in the bank despite falling to a third straight defeat. After going 3-0 in his first three UFC fights, 'Astro Boy' was fast-tracked to a title shot and lost a close decision to Alexandre Pantoja, before suffering a knockout by Kai Kara-France and this loss to Moreno. Still, the calibre of his opponents and competitiveness of his clashes with Pantoja and Moreno bode well for his future.
Meanwhile, Moreno impressed greatly as he picked up a second straight win en route to a potential third title reign. Last time out, in November, the 31-year-old outpointed Amir Albazi, having lost split decisions to Brandon Royval and Pantoja in his previous two outings.
The defeat by Pantoja – his third against the Brazilian – saw Moreno lose the flyweight title for the second time. He held the gold from June 2021 to January 2022 and from January 2023 until July of that year.

Barcelona announce Marcus Rashford loan deal as Man Utd outcast seals exit

Barcelona have wrapped up the loan signing of Marcus Rashford, giving the England star an escape from Manchester United after being frozen out by manager Ruben Amorim. Rashford has not played for United since December 2024 after a row with Amorim over his training performances and he was later sent on loan to Aston Villa, where he showed glimpses of his ability before suffering a season-ending injury. But now the 27-year-old has a chance to impress on the biggest stage and compete for a starting spot with the likes of Lamine Yamal and Raphinha under new boss Hansi Flick. Barcelona will cover Rashford's wages for the duration of his spell, though the player will take a pay cut on his usual salary of £325,000-a-week. The club have a £26million option to buy next summer and there is huge anticipation to see how Rashford gets on alongside a star-studded squad that will be competing on multiple fronts for silverware. Rashford is said to have emerged as Barcelona's "priority target" after Nico Williams decided to sign a 10-year deal with Athletic Bilbao. Barcelona won La Liga in Flick's first season but now want to push on and become a force in Europe, with Rashford the club's third major signing this summer after goalkeeper Joan Garcia and Copenhagen forward Roony Bardghji. Rashford's first goal at the Nou Camp will be to break into the first team, knowing it will be hard to displace either Yamal or Raphinha on the wings. Yamal is considered one of the best players in world football right now, with the teenager scoring 18 and assisting 16 in all competitions last season. Brazilian star Raphinha, meanwhile, had an even better campaign as he scored 34 times and assisted 17. Barcelona fans do appear to be excited by Rashford's arrival on loan after creating a mural for him pictured in the club's colours, while much of the reaction to his signing has been positive. Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo report that he'll wear the No.14 shirt, last worn by Pablo Torre, who recently joined Mallorca. Rashford arrives with some pedigree, having won five trophies during his time at United and scoring 138 goals in 426 appearances. He has also notched 17 goals in 62 caps for England. Tom Aspinall reacts to Ciryl Gane fight as first undisputed title defence is confirmed

Tom Aspinall has said he intends to 'get rid of' Ciryl Gane from the UFC heavyweight title picture, when he defends the belt against the Frenchman in October. Tuesday (22 July) brought the announcement that Aspinall will make his first undisputed-title defence in the main event of UFC 321, finally taking on European rival Gane. The pair have been linked numerous times in recent years, with Gane and the Briton occupying top rankings in the division. Gane, 35, won the interim belt in 2021 but failed to unify the titles with then-champion Francis Ngannou in January 2022, while Aspinall claimed the interim strap in November 2023 and never got the chance to face fellow title-holder Jon Jones. Jones's recent retirement saw Aspinall, 32, elevated to undisputed champion, almost a year after he took the rare decision to defend the interim belt – which he retained against Curtis Blaydes in Manchester. Now, the Wigan fighter prepares to defend the undisputed title for the first time, in Abu Dhabi on 25 October. 'Finally we're back, after over a year hiatus,' Aspinall said in an Instagram video on Wednesday (23 July). 'Me and Ciryl finally signed on the dotted line. 'This is the fourth time we've been matched up together. He turned the fight early on, before we were both in the rankings. 'After that, he fought Spivac [in 2023]. I said in a post-fight interview after I beat [Marcin] Tybura: 'I'm going to go to Paris, I'm going to be sat front row for Ciryl Gane against Serghei Spivac, I'm gonna beat the winner, and then I'm gonna beat Jon Jones.' I went to Paris, Ciryl unfortunately turned down the fight on a second occasion. 'The third occasion, I fought Curtis Blaydes. The original opponent was Ciryl Gane. Unfortunately, Ciryl was busy that date. Ciryl was filming his Netflix series. I can't remember what it's called, but I'm sure you can check it out now on Netflix. 'And now we are matched up for 25 October, Abu Dhabi. Me and Ciryl, the fourth attempt is here, and this is Ciryl's third title shot. So, we are going to try and get rid of Ciryl Gane from the title picture for good.' Aspinall's last fight was his first-round knockout of Blaydes in July 2024, as he avenged an injury-induced loss to the American from 2022. Meanwhile, Gane's last outing was a controversial fight with Alexander Volkov in December, when the Frenchman outpointed the Russian for the second time, though many fans and pundits disagreed with the scoring. Gane's previous two undisputed-title fights were his points loss to Ngannou, and his first-round submission loss to Jones in 2023. The latter result saw Jones, the consensus greatest light-heavyweight ever, win the vacant heavyweight title. Jones was then due to defend the belt against divisional great Stipe Miocic in November 2023, but he suffered an injury that delayed the bout by 12 months. On the night they were first due to fight, Aspinall instead faced Sergei Pavlovich, knocking him out in round one to become interim champion. Aspinall then retained the interim strap against Blaydes before Jones, 38, stopped Miocic, 42, last November. Jones never committed to fighting Aspinall in a unification bout, and ultimately the American retired last month.

Commonwealth Games at risk of TV blackout as no broadcast deal secured for Glasgow event

The BBC has yet to sign a deal to show the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with 12 months to go before the event kicks-off. The Commonwealth Games is at risk of a TV blackout in the UK with no broadcast deal yet secured for the event's return to Glasgow next year. ‌ The BBC has been the principal broadcaster of the sporting extravaganza since 1954 but the corporation confirmed today it was still in talks over whether this would continue in 2026. ‌ Insiders said some Beeb bosses were unconvinced of the event's continuing relevance, with fewer countries willing to host it. ‌ Glasgow was previously announced in September last year as an emergency stand-in for the next Games after several other cities pulled out over cost fears. The vast majority of the event's budget is now coming from the £100m compensation the Australian state of Victoria paid Commonwealth organisers after backing out. The UK and Scottish Governments both refused to underwrite the costs of staging the event, citing wider pressures on public finances. ‌ An agreement to broadcast the previous Games in Glasgow in 2014 was in place two years before it kicked-off. Phil Batty, chief executive of Glasgow 2026, said: "This week we have just announced Sky New Zealand as one of our broadcast partners. "We also have Channel 7 in Australia, and there will be news on a UK broadcaster later this year." ‌ A spokeswoman for the Games told the Record: "We're in positive discussions with broadcasters across the Commonwealth, including the UK, and further announcements will be made in the months ahead." First Minister John Swinney has said he is confident Glasgow is "well-organised and well-prepared" for a new-look Games that will capture the public's imagination. He said: "All of our experience tells us that, on major events, the people of Scotland - and especially in Glasgow - get engaged." ‌ Swinney also backed Glasgow's decision to save an event which has been criticised in some quarters as being an outdated link to Britain's colonial past. He told the BBC: "The Commonwealth is still a very important forum for international co-operation and partnership between countries. "And, frankly, we need more international co-operation and friendship and collective endeavour in a world that is becoming increasingly fractured." ‌ The event has been massively scaled-back as a result of cost considerations, with just 11 sports being contested across four venues. Athletics will be staged at Scotstoun stadium, not Hampden Park, while swimming events will once again be held at the existing Tollcross pool. The overall budget for the 2014 event was £543m, but this time around just £114-130m will be spent. Petria Thomas, head of the Australian Commonwealth commission, said: "We're incredibly grateful and fortunate that the Scottish have stepped up to the mark here. It was obviously highly disappointing that the Victorian government pulled out and it left the Commonwealth sport movement in a very difficult position. "It's fantastic that the Games will be on in Glasgow. Obviously a little bit of a different look to them this time with fewer sports which is a shame. But it's the reality of the position that the Commonwealth sport movement was put in, unfortunately."
