Devon Marsman's mother says she may never have closure as celebration of life held for teen
Marsman was last seen on Feb. 24, 2022, in the Spryfield area of Halifax, and was reported missing the following week. The teen's remains were found last fall.
Five people have been charged in connection with his disappearance and killing.
"I'm not sure if I'm ever going to have closure," Gray said Sunday in an interview at a church hall where a celebration of life was held for her son.
"Even after the trials and whatever happens in the trials, I don't get my son back."
Family, friends and members of the community gathered at Saint Agnes Church hall to remember Marsman, who was described in his obituary as someone who "loved to pull pranks and always had the most contagious laugh."
The gathering was a mix of happiness and sadness, said Gray, with people crying, sharing funny anecdotes, and calling for justice. Many wore custom shirts bearing Marsman's face and age.
Dressed in black and wearing pins with his portrait were many of Marsman's close friends.
Gage Mamye recalled his childhood friend as "a kind soul" who was like a brother. Mamye said the celebration of life was an important step in helping Marsman's friends move forward.
"Everybody was a little bit of a mess when we were looking for him. So now that he's finally back home with his parents, it's a bit of relief to be able to celebrate him that way," he said in an interview.
At the end of the ceremony, Mamye and other friends and family released 16 white pigeons, representing the 16 years Marsman lived.
Police initially stated there was no indication of foul play after Marsman went missing, but eight months after his disappearance, they said the case was suspicious.
Treyton Alexander Marsman, 26, was charged last year with second-degree murder, indignity to human remains and obstruction of justice. Police previously confirmed there is a "familial relationship" between Devon Marsman and Treyton Marsman, but would not elaborate.
A 20-year-old man is facing charges of accessory after the fact to murder and obstructing justice. He cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act because he was a youth at the time of the alleged offences.
Emma Maria Meta Casey, 23, is facing charges of accessory after the fact to murder, indignity to human remains and obstructing justice.
Chelsey Herritt, 26, has been charged with accessory after the fact to murder and indignity to human remains.
A fifth accused, 40-year-old Mark Douglas Robert Doyle, was charged in March with accessory after the fact to murder.
Police have not said where Devon Marsman's remains were found, citing ongoing court proceedings.
His mother said the wait for answers has been frustrating, and she hopes justice will be served. In the meantime, Gray said she is appreciative of the support her family has received.
"I knew that the outcome of love would be here today," she said Sunday. "Devon has a Facebook page with close to 8,000 people, and the people that shared his name and shared his story over three years was amazing from the beginning."

Teen sentenced to 10 months in custody for role in fatal stabbing of Halifax student
HALIFAX – A 17-year-old Halifax-area boy has been sentenced 10 months in a youth detention centre for his role in the stabbing death of a high school student during a brawl over a girl. Provincial youth court Judge Mark Heerema also sentenced the accused to 17 months of supervision in the community, during which he will continue receiving intensive rehabilitative treatment for mental health issues. The 27-month sentence was added to the 15 months the young offender has spent in custody since 16-year-old Ahmad Al Marrach was murdered in a parkade next to the Halifax Shopping Centre on April 22, 2024. The young offender pleaded guilty to manslaughter in October, having admitted he was one of four teens who attacked Al Marrach. All four accused were initially charged with second-degree murder, but a girl who was 14 at the time of the killing pleaded guilty to manslaughter in October and was sentenced to three months in custody followed by two years of supervision in the community. The boy who fatally stabbed Al Marrach, who was 14 at the time of the attack, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in January, and his sentencing hearing will resume Sept. 12. Meanwhile, another 17-year-old boy who the Crown said was responsible for organizing the fight, was convicted of manslaughter last month by a youth court judge. His weeklong sentencing hearing starts Oct. 20. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Aug. 1, 2025.

Woman files lawsuit against Frank Stronach, Magna over alleged 1986 sexual assault
Then-Magna chairman Frank Stronach speaks at his final AGM in Markham, Ont., on May 4, 2011. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Frank Gunn Billionaire businessman Frank Stronach, who is awaiting trial on more than a dozen charges related to sexual assault, is now also facing a civil lawsuit from a woman who alleges he sexually assaulted her decades ago when she was a student sponsored by Magna, the auto parts company he founded. In a statement of claim filed in June, Jane Boon alleges Stronach sexually assaulted her at a company guest house in December 1986 after plying her with alcohol during a corporate party at a Toronto restaurant he owned. She also alleges Magna knew Stronach, who was the company's controlling shareholder and director at the time, posed a risk to female students receiving sponsorship and took no steps to warn or protect her or others like her. The allegations have not been tested in court and neither Stronach nor Magna have filed a statement of defence at this time. Stronach's civil lawyer, Sarit Batner, says he "strenuously denies the allegations and will vigorously defend this lawsuit." Magna declined to comment, citing the ongoing legal claim. The 92-year-old tycoon was charged last year with 18 counts – including sexual assault and indecent assault – related to 13 complainants, with some allegations dating back to the 1970s. He's expected to face trial on 12 of the counts in Toronto early next year, and has pleaded not guilty in that case. Another trial is set to take place later in Newmarket on the remaining counts. Stronach has denied all allegations against him. Boon is not among the complainants in the criminal cases, none of whom can be identified due to a standard publication ban. Boon alleges in the lawsuit that she was sexually assaulted by Stronach after attending Magna's annual shareholder meeting in December 1986, followed by a corporate after-party that evening at a Toronto restaurant he owned. She claims Stronach seated her next to him at the dinner table, where the restaurant's maître d' topped up wine glasses "frequently," and he pulled her onto the dance floor at one point. The lawsuit says Boon, who was working in Guelph, Ont., at the time, declined an offer to stay at the corporate guest house that night. But when Stronach's driver came over to the table after dessert, Boon alleges Stronach announced: "Jane has had too much to drink. She can't go back to Guelph. I'll drive her to the guest house and you can take her car." The lawsuit claims an "incredulous and uncertain" Boon left with Stronach, worried about her future and what would happen if she rebuffed him. Stronach took her to the guest house north of Toronto, where he undressed her and had unprotected sex with her without consent, the lawsuit alleges. "The sexual abuse and misconduct by Stronach has had significant ongoing negative consequences on Boon's life," the claim says. – With files from Sonja Puzic. Alliston man jailed again two days after release on bail
Kody Berdan, 36, was arrested again on Thursday after provincial police say he violated the condition of his bail release. Berdan was under a house arrest condition when he was released on Tuesday. But according to Nottawasaga OPP, patrolling officers saw him near Yonge Street in Alliston at around 12:30 p.m. on Thursday. He was arrested and charged with failing to comply with a release order and failing to comply with a probation order. He is scheduled to be back in court on Wednesday following an appearance in a virtual courtroom from the Nottawasaga OPP detachment in Alliston. Berdan was sentenced last week after he pleaded guilty to breaking a man's fingers and was granted bail on weapons charges. He was then released on house arrest to a surety days after he was mistakenly let out of jail by staff at Central North Correctional Centre in Penetanguishene. Berdan's older brother Darryl, also known as Kenny, faces several serious charges that include drug possession and failing to comply with release orders. The allegations against them have not been tested in court. With files from CTV's Mike Arsalides.
