Pupil dies, several injured after 'drunk' KZN scholar transport driver crashes
Duma said he was alerted to the crash via WhatsApp messages from community members in Ndwedwe about an alleged drunk driver of a scholar transport vehicle.

'I also received a disturbing video of the [allegedly] drunk driver and other photos. I immediately assigned a team to urgently visit the scene of a crash caused by the same driver. The team also proceeded to Montobella District Hospital to monitor the condition of 10 learners who were injured,' he said.
Duma said he received news in the early hours of Thursday of the death of one of the pupils.
Six other pupils were treated and discharged, while four were admitted with severe head and body injuries.
'The extent of the injuries suggests extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation. I have mandated the team to launch an investigation and assess the management of this scholar transport service and many others.
'Drastic action will be taken not only against the driver but also against the owner of this service provider. In addition, I have mandated the Road Traffic Inspectorate and other law enforcement agencies in the province to be on full alert and do spot checks of scholar transport.'
On Tuesday Duma presented a report on scholar transport to the KwaZulu-Natal legislature transport portfolio committee.
'We reported over the past 400 days we have ensured scholar transport for more than 77,369 learners in 434 schools in all parts of the province. The department is administering the learner transport services programme on behalf of the education department with a budget of R341.154m this financial year,' he said.
There are 85 contracts spread across 12 districts, he added.
'Despite the coverage outlined above, the programme still has a backlog of 1,571 schools on the waiting list, as well as 234,907 learners requiring the service. We need more than R2bn for this purpose.'

Speeding lawyer arrested in KZN after driving at 222km/h in his Mercedes

Image: Supplied A lawyer and an auditor were among motorists arrested for excessive speeding this weekend along the N2 near Park Rynie, as part of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport's ongoing "Zero Tolerance, No Nonsense, and Alufakwa" road safety campaign. MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, commended the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) team stationed at Park Rynie for their vigilance and commitment to curbing road carnage. 'We wish to pause and commend the RTI team from Park Rynie working along the N2 for their vigilance and dedication towards ensuring road safety this weekend,' said Duma. Among those arrested was a lawyer who was allegedly clocked at 222km/h in a blue Mercedes-Benz while travelling from Umtata, nearly double the legal limit in a 120km/h zone. He initially failed to stop when instructed, prompting officers to give chase before apprehending him. The man was taken to Scottburgh Police Station and released on R3,000 bail. Also arrested was an auditor from Reservoir Hills, who was caught driving at 177km/h in a Hyundai. He was also taken to Scottburgh Police Station and granted R1,500 bail. A third motorist, whose name has not yet been released, was arrested after being caught driving at 178km/h and remains in custody awaiting bail. Video Player is loading. Man sentenced to 25 years' imprisonment for murder of partner
A man was sentenced to 25 years' imprisonment for the murder of his partner at the Victoria West Regional Court, Northern Cape. The 37-year-old Jan Jonkers brutally murdered Charlene Tieties (31) at their residence in Kimberley. Jonkers assaulted and stabbed Tieties with a knife and she was immediately rushed to the hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. According to a police statement, Jonkers fled the scene after the incident but was later captured on the same day. He applied for bail but was denied and sentenced. In another similar incident in Kimberley, a 35-year-old man was given a double life sentence for the rape and murder of 21-year-old Thobeka Bosman. Selby George raped and strangled Bosman. The deceased's half-naked body was found under a bridge on Snyman Street in the same area. George was arrested shortly after and was sentenced at the Kimberley High Court on Thursday, 1 August 2025. Four suspects were arrested for the murder of a mother (34) and her 2-year-old daughter, who went missing in May this year. Following an intensive search, SAPS Thohoyandou intervention Team, Thohoyandou Detectives and the Provincial Missing Person Team discovered the decapitated bodies of the two victims. The South African reached out to Colonel Malesela Ledwaba about the location where the bodies were discovered, but has not received a response yet. Additionally, one of the victims is alleged to be the partner of the deceased mother. The motive behind the murder is unknown. The first two suspects, Tshilidzi Phalandwa(43)and Balangani Sedzani Tshivhombedze (32), appeared before the Vuwani Magistrate's Court on Friday, 1 August 2025 and were remanded in custody as the case was postponed to 12 August 2025. The two other suspects, a 55-year-old man and a traditional healer (38), were arrested a few days later. Police discovered the missing heads of the two victims at the traditional healer's residence. Both suspects will appear before the Thohoyandou Magistrate's Court on Monday, 4 August 2025, over murder charges. In addition, a charge of possession of human tissue will be handed over against the traditional healer.
