Praveshanotsavam
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the Praveshanotsavam 2026-26, the formal reopening of the school, by lighting a traditional lamp in a function held in a State-run higher secondary school in Alappuzha.
In the culturally rich event, the Chief Minister also launched the State-level distribution of study materials.
During his address, Mr. Vijayan said children should be able to imbibe wisdom and discernment beyond knowledge through education.
"We should approach everything with critical intelligence. Secular thinking and democratic consciousness should be instilled in the minds of children. That should be the objective of education," he said.
Besides children, teachers should also be ready to be updated themselves with fresh knowledge and inputs, he said.
All schools should carry out a coordinated effort to create an atmosphere of curiosity and inquisitiveness to allay the fears and concerns of students, he added.
Mr. Vijayan also detailed the comprehensive changes being implemented by the State government during the new academic year.
Besides Mr. Vijayan, General Education Minister V. Sivankutty and Fisheries Minister Saji Cherian and other people's representatives were also present during the function.
The State government introduced several new changes, including time changes for high schools and value-based education in the new academic year.

Another Air Tragedy Strikes: Russian Passenger Plane Crashes, All Feared Dead

A devastating air tragedy unfolded in Russia's Far East as an Antonov An-24 passenger aircraft, carrying approximately 50 people, crashed during a regional flight on Thursday, July 24. Initial reports from Russian emergency officials suggest that all passengers and crew members on board are feared dead. The 50-year old aircraft was en route from Khabarovsk to Blagoveshchensk and Tynda when it disappeared from radar, according to a statement by the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, released on Telegram. 'During the search operation, a Mi-8 helicopter belonging to Rossaviatsiya discovered the fuselage of the aircraft, which was on fire,' the ministry stated. The Amur Center for Civil Defence and Fire Safety later confirmed that the wreckage was located on a mountain slope about 16 kilometers (10 miles) from Tynda, a remote town in the Amur region near the Chinese border. An aerial survey of the site found no survivors. Footage published by Russian media showed thick plumes of smoke rising from a dense forest, believed to be the crash site. Regional Governor Vasily Orlov shared that, based on preliminary data, the plane was carrying 43 passengers, including five children, and six crew members. This tragedy marks Russia's first fatal commercial aviation accident since July 2021, when a Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Air Antonov An‑26 crashed near Palana, claiming the lives of all 28 people on board. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash, and recovery efforts are ongoing.

In male-dominated Kanwar Yatra, women pilgrims struggle to find space

Defeating all odds, Munni Devi, 32, a resident of Usmanpur, Shahdara, completed the Kanwar Yatra on Tuesday, carrying pots of water from Ganga in Haridwar on her shoulders and covering a distance of over 240 kilometres on foot. Ms. Devi, a devotee of Lord Shiva, who undertook the pilgrimage with her 12-year-old son, Pappu, said that finding a place in rituals and space in the male-dominated pilgrimage was more challenging than physical endurance. 'I participated in the yatra this year as my son desperately wanted to go for it. I did not want him to take the yatra in the company of other men,' Ms. Devi, sews/embroiders clothes for a living, said. Her son is a school dropout Amid hundreds of male pilgrims at a camp in Shahdara, Kiran Devi, 40, was trying to find a covered space to change her clothes and take rest. A Tikri border resident who has been participating in the yatra for five years, Ms. Kiran Devi told The Hindu that the organisers had 'ignored the needs of women participants'. 'Ever since my husband fell ill, I have been going for the yatra. To date, I have not found a separate washroom or resting space for women in any camp across the route,' she rued. She said with no separate space for women pilgrims, she had to take rest in the common area of the camp. Pilgrims felicitated Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday visited a camp at Shastri Park, north-east Delhi and felicitated the kanwariyas returning from Haridwar. 'It is an arduous journey, especially when it rains. But the camps set up by the Delhi government were equipped to meet all our needs,' said Ranjeet Paswan, 22, a migrant worker from Sitamarhi, Bihar, who was felicitated. With the yatra ending on Wednesday, Delhi Police heaved a sigh of relief as managing traffic and unruly elements had kept the force on edge.'There were various incidents of kanwariyas creating a law and order problem,' said a senior police officer. The officer said multiple complaints of loud music being played by the kanwariyas en route had also been received. 'However, there was no complaint of vandalism,' the officer added. The yatra also kept food stall owners in several areas on the edge. At a pizza joint in Shahdara, the manager and staff said they had been tense ever since a viral video of a popular food chain in Ghaziabad being targeted by kanwariyas surfaced. 'We put the guards on alert, just in case a large number of kanwariyas enter,' the manager said. Rajat Kumar, 55, a street food vendor, complained that a group of six-seven kanwariyas ate at his stall, then got into a verbal spat, and refused to pay him. 'They said they did not like the taste and left,' he said.

Naval Dockyard staff pedal to protect environment

Naval personnel were seen pedalling on bicycles within the premises of the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam, under the Union Ministry of Defence as part of an eco-friendly initiative. As many as 300 bicycles and 15 bicycle stands have been installed at various locations inside the Naval Dockyard. The initiative looks to reduce pollution levels and promote sustainability saving the environment. The Naval Dockyard authorities have introduced this Public Bicycle Sharing System (PBSS) to enable personnel ride bicycles to official movement during office hours within the premises of the dockyard free of cost. The system is operated and maintained by a private contractor under a three year contract agreement. These bicycles are available to all naval officers, employees, sailors, engineers, as well as those working in the dockyard on contract and outsourced staff. Users must register via SMS/app-based over the phone. Once registered, a user can cycle during the permitted hours and the bicycles are restricted for use within the dockyard. Each user will have an employee ID, which will be registered with the PBSS staff. The cycles have a sticker reading PBSS Dockyard Visakhapatnam. In a formal conversation with The Hindu, a naval personnel said, 'I commute to the dockyard on my two-wheeler. I park my vehicle and then take the cycle to carry out departmental tasks. I have been doing this for the past two years.' PBSS Supervisor N. Nagaraju said that the PBSS initiative was first started three years ago and has inspired similar efforts at the Naval Dockyard in Karwar (Karnataka), where 200 bicycles are now in use. He said: 'At least 500 naval personnel use our bicycles inside the dockyard in Visakhapatnam daily, and 300-400 personnel in Karwar. The initiative saves the environment by discouraging polluting motor vehicles. It also gives promotes physical fitness among the naval staff, and employment to at least 50 individuals including young women.'
