However, his swift ascent within PKR has ignited tensions and raised eyebrows among party veterans.
Speaking after the recent leadership shake-up, the Sungai Buloh MP urged critics not to pressure Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim over Cabinet appointments.
He stressed that while he does not seek a ministerial post for his commitment lies in fulfilling the duties entrusted to him.
His remarks come amid speculation that former UMNO supreme council member Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz may be eyeing a PKR berth following the resignation of Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Datuk Seri Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.
Ramanan's name has since surfaced as a likely candidate for ministerial promotion – his first since Anwar assumed office.
Indians sceptical of Ramanan
Yet Ramanan's rapid rise has not gone uncontested. Rafizi, the former PKR deputy president, has publicly questioned how someone who joined the party just four years ago could leapfrog long-serving Reformasi-era stalwarts to secure a top post.
Notably, Ramanan was formerly the treasurer-general of MIC before his sudden exit and entry into PKR – a move that still raises questions within political circles.
Rafizi's criticism wasn't subtle: he expressed concern over Anwar's sweeping powers to promote and sideline party members.
According to him, Ramanan lacks stand-out qualities beyond his staunch loyalty to Anwar – a loyalty that, he implies, seems to be the main currency in today's PKR.
Despite his political surge, many in the Indian community remain sceptical of Ramanan's ability – or willingness -to fight for their rights.
Critics argue he has been largely silent on key issues affecting Indians, including the controversial relocation of a 130-year-old Hindu temple in Kuala Lumpur to make way for the new Madani mosque.
Indian leaders in PKR, including Ramanan, not only failed to oppose the move but some even defended it.
Ramanan insists his dedication to the Indian community remains unchanged whether he is assigned a ministerial role or not.
But for many, such reassurances ring hollow. The perception is that Indian leaders in the current government function more as rubber stamps than as real advocates.
The underlying issue, critics say, is not just representation but meaningful leadership. Recently Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad laughed off the claim that there are no qualified Indian candidates – citing the community's abundance of doctors and lawyers – yet Anwar's Madani government has failed to reflect that in its Cabinet.
Recall that during Dr Mahathir's 22-month Pakatan Harapan (PH) administration, three Indian Tamils and one Sikh were appointed ministers.
Today, the Indian community watches anxiously to see whether Anwar will finally appoint an Indian Tamil to the Cabinet – and whether that leader will truly speak for them.
Ultimately, Ramanan's rise may symbolise a deeper shift in PKR: a party once known for reform but now seemingly shaped by loyalty over legacy and compliance over conviction.

Shamsul Azri: ECRL project reaches 85pct progress
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL) has been instructed to closely monitor the implementation of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project, which has now reached 85 per cent completion. Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar conveyed this directive during the 32nd MRL Board of Directors meeting, held in conjunction with its retreat in Melaka which began yesterday. He said MRL was also tasked with ensuring that there are no disruptions, such as rail encroachments by irresponsible parties, as such incidents could affect the project's timeline and delay the targeted commencement of operations in early 2027. "I am confident that the ECRL project will become a landmark of national pride and a catalyst for economic revitalisation along its alignment and surrounding areas, directly benefiting the people and the nation. "This is in line with the 'Kesejahteraan' (prosperity) pillar under the Madani principle, which can only be realised through a whole-of-government and whole-of-nation approach, involving synergy between the federal and state governments as well as the private sector," he said in a Facebook post today. In a separate post, Shamsul Azri said the MRL retreat was vital in determining the strategic direction and operational targets of the ECRL service. "Various initiatives are being planned by MRL in collaboration with multiple stakeholders to ensure an efficient rail operating ecosystem, as well as to provide job opportunities for local youths. "In addition, this project will create avenues for business activity, stimulate economic growth, and improve connectivity between the West and East Coasts of Peninsular Malaysia," he said.

PH Sabah to present joint manifesto ahead of state election

KOTA KINABALU (July 5): Pakatan Harapan (PH) component parties in Sabah will be releasing a joint manifesto ahead of the upcoming state election, said Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sabah chief Datuk Ts Mustapha Sakmud. He said PKR is currently drafting its manifesto, which will be unveiled alongside those of the other three Sabah PH components — United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (Upko), National Trust Party (Amanah) and Democratic Action Party (DAP). 'The manifesto will highlight issues close to the hearts of Sabahans, particularly the state's 40 percent revenue entitlement under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63),' said Mustapha. He added that PKR will also propose a guideline formula to ensure fair distribution of key positions, such as village heads and appointments in government-linked companies (GLCs), based on each party's strength within the coalition. 'This is to prevent dissatisfaction and to ensure equitable representation,' he told reporters after presenting an institute for higher education offer letter to a student at Kampung Warisan on Saturday. He added that the proposed appointment system would be included in the joint manifesto. On a separate note, Mustapha expressed confidence in the continued strong support for PKR president and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, especially in Sabah, where Anwar enjoys a high approval rating. Addressing recent internal criticisms, particularly regarding the appointment of Nurul Izzah Anwar as PKR deputy president, Mustapha acknowledged the dissatisfaction voiced by some quarters. 'Some may not be happy with the party elections, but as a leader, I believe our members are beginning to understand that the focus should be on the party's direction and unity— not individuals,' he said.
