Almatti dam height issue: MVA netas seek meeting with flood study panel members
They are requesting clarification on state govt's position concerning floods and Karnataka's plans for the dam's elevation.
Despite Vikhe Patil's assurance at a May 21 meeting in Mumbai about including all political parties in subsequent discussions, MVA functionaries report they weren't invited to the May 31 meeting.
The correspondence, endorsed by MPs Shahu Chhatrapati, Vishal Patil, and legislators from Kolhapur, Sangli, and Satara districts, raises several queries.
They seek information about the implementation status of the Nandkumar Vadnere committee's recommendations following the 2019 floods. The MVA politicians requested a consultation with the panel to understand their conclusions about the dam height on flooding.
They also raised questions about the status of the National Institute of Hydrology's study regarding the dam's backwater effects on flooding, and whether their findings have been submitted to the govt.
"Over the past month, approximately 3,000 objections have been filed with central govt by the people of Sangli and Kolhapur regarding the concerns of raising the height of the dam. What is central govt's stance on these objections, and has state govt corresponded with central govt on this matter? If not, why? These issues need clarification," said Satej Patil, Congress MLC.
The representatives are also requesting details about the Maharashtra Resilient Development Programme (MRDP), a Rs 3,200 crore initiative to address recurring floods in Kolhapur and Sangli districts. They specifically asked whether scientific studies support the project's effectiveness in flood control and requested access to relevant reports.

Selling SBI shares worth Rs 25000 cr part of privatisation: BEFI
Thiruvananthapuram, July 12 (UNI) Bank Employees Federation of India has alleged that the Centre's move to sell shares of State Bank of India (SBI) worth Rs 25,000 crore SBI) is an open attempt to privatize the bank in a phased manner sacrificing national interests. "In 2017, the bank had sold 522 million shares. This reduced the government's stake in the bank to 56.92 percent. Now, with the completion of the targeted share sale, the government's stake will diminish below 55 percent," BEFI vice president Saji Varghese said. "The sale of shares through qualified institutional placement has been reported by national media," he added. "Despite the vacancies of about one lakh employees and officers, the outsourcing of jobs and the deployment of daily wage workers without making them permanent is a prelude to privatization... After the budget presentation, the Union Finance Minister had announced that government would sell shares of public sector banks including SBI. Other public sector banks are also preparing for share sale" he said. The privatization of the country's largest public sector bank, SBI, will have far-reaching consequences. Public sector banks serve as a protective shield for the Indian economy. It is this protective shield that is being undermined through bank privatization, he stated. "As banks come under the control of corporates, services for the common people will get affected and services will be limited to the elite class," he added. The SBI plans to support loan growth, strengthen its balance sheet and meet regulatory requirements. Visakhapatnam: Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation Mayor Peela Srinivasa Rao mentioned that the coalition government will work towards development of the city. On Friday, along with Pendurthi MLA Panchakarla Ramesh Babu and ward corporator M Mutyala Naidu, he laid foundation stone for various development projects worth Rs 3.13 crore in 88th ward. Speaking on the occasion, the Mayor said that the NDA government led by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu will develop State on all fronts in a consistent manner. He said that Visakhapatnam is a very attractive city and there is a need to develop the city to draw more number of tourists. Srinivasa Rao stated that that as part of facilitating infrastructure for the people, CC roads, CC canals, CC culverts, box culverts are being constructed in Bangarupeta, Indira Nagar, Mutyamamba colony, Kothur, Nagaraju Thota, Kunchuvanipalem, Gangavaram and other areas in the ward. The Mayor instructed the GVMC engineering officials to commence works at the earliest and complete them within the stipulated time.
