Paul Mario Day dead: Original Iron Maiden singer dies as new band pays tribute
Original Iron Maiden singer Paul Mario Day has died at the age of 69.
The singer, who was enlisted by bassist Steve Harris when he formed iconic heavy metal group Iron Maiden in 1975, was the band's first vocalist. He performed with the group between 1975 and 1976, before he was replaced by Dennis Wilcock. The band's original line-up only lasted for 10 months.
Wilcock was later replaced by Paul Di'Anno, who performed on the heavy metal group's first two albums before the role was taken over, in the longterm, by Bruce Dickinson.
Paul's death was announced by the band he joined after Iron Maiden, More. The heavy metal group wrote on social media: "We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the great MORE vocalist Paul Mario Day. Paul was a huge part of the [New Wave of British Heavy Metal] from his time in an early version of Iron Maiden and of course his fantastic performance on the 'Warhead' album."
"He was a well loved figure in British rock music and played many memorable shows not least the legendary 1981 Monsters of Rock show at Castle Donington with AC/DC, Whitesnake /David Coverdale as well as tours with Iron Maiden Def Leppard and many other legendary artists.
"Mike Freeland remembers him fondly as a 'bloody great vocalist!' It's an honour for us to continue to play his music and we will always think of him every time we hit the opening notes to 'Warhead'.
"We send our deepest condolences to Paul's family and friends and also the many fans around the world who love his music."
Paul's brief stint in Iron Maiden was documented in the band's DVD, Iron Maiden: The Early Days, in which it was revealed he was let go due to his lack of stage presence.
The vocalist even discussed his own departure from the band in 2019 as he told Blabbermouth: "Steve was saying, 'You've got to get better. You've got to be more in the audience's face. You've got to be commanding. You've got to be a hero.'
"And I agreed with him, but I didn't actually know how to make that happen. I got warning for maybe three months: 'Get it together. Get it together.'
"And I wanted to, I just didn't know how to do it. So the funny thing is, the worst experience was the best lesson because when I got that notice and I felt so gutted, it changed me."
He continued: "The real reality. Iron Maiden at that time were nothing, honestly. It was the beginning… Everyone had to start from zero. That was when I was in the band, that was their zero point.
"What Steve was doing was trying to make the band big. He knew what he wanted. What he wanted is what he got. He got one of the biggest bands on the planet. As much as it hurt, as much as it upset me, I learnt a big lesson that day. I really did. I used that emotion, I guess, in my singing."

Patrick Kielty's new Cat Deeley fear has him in a 'very dark place'
Insiders close to Patrick Kielty have revealed his biggest fear following his split with Cat Deeley that could leave him in a 'very dark place'. Earlier this week, the two presenters announced their separation after more than a decade of marriage. Patrick, 54, who earns £215,000 a year as presenter of The Late Late Show, and Cat, 48, who hosts This Morning alongside Ben Shepard, gave a joint statement together. The couple said: 'We have taken the decision to end our marriage and are now separated. There is no other party involved. 'We will continue to be united as loving parents to our children and would therefore kindly ask for our family privacy to be respected. There will be no further comment.' Now, however, sources near to Patrick have revealed his fear that Cat could move back to the US, where the family previously lived, and she could taketheir children with her. A source told MailOnline: 'Everyone is worried about Paddy. The fear is that Cat will go back to America with the little ones. That will leave him in a very dark place.' Following the news that Lorraine and Loose Women's hours have been cut, the source went on to add: 'Cat's time on This Morning has not been a failure, but it has hardly been a roaring success. 'It is a job which puts her under so much scrutiny, day-in and day-out, and unlike most British presenters she has plenty more lucrative options to choose from in the States. 'There is concern that all of this family drama could lead her to walk away.' Cat and Patrick lived in Los Angeles for more than 14 years, where Cat presented So You Think You Can Dance, which she was reportedly paid £43,000 an episode. Earlier this year, it was revealed why Cat did not attend the funeral of Patrick's mother in County Down, Northern Ireland. The presenter said she wanted to be there for her sons Milo, nine, and James, seven, before and after they finished school as they grieved the loss of their grandmother. Her representative confirmed to MailOnline: 'Cat remained at home to be there for her two young children before and after school on this very sad day.' The TV stars met while presenting Fame Academy together on the BBC in 2003, at which time Cat was married to her ex-husband Mark Whelan. Their professional relationship quickly evolved into a personal one, and they got married in September 2012 at an intimate ceremony in Rome. More Trending They also welcomed their son Milo in January 2016 and James in June 2018. In 2023, Patrick took over from Ryan Tubridy as the host of The Late Late Show on Ireland's RTE One channel in 2023 Cat was then unveiled as the new host of This Morning, alongside Shepard, in February 2024. The ‘superior' 90s chocolate bar Brits wish Cadbury would bring back
There's no devastation quite like realising your favourite chocolate bar has been discontinued forever. And for the most loyal fans, a dupe just won't do. Now, the British public has spoken on the long-lost pick it wants to see return to shelves – and it's a creamy, minty treat that hasn't been seen in more than 20 years. A beloved (former) member of the Cadbury family, the Wispa Mint first hit shelves in 1995 – and though it was discontinued back in 2003, chocolate lovers have never quite forgotten it. Surveying 2,000 people across the UK, new research has concluded that the minty twist on the classic Wispa came out on top, as more than 1 in 5 (22%) said it was the long-lost chocolate bar they'd most like to see return. Cadbury has been known to experiment with its Wispa bar – but it hasn't always been a smooth ride. 20 years after it first launched, in 2003, the Wispa brand was briefly discontinued and rebranded as the Dairy Milk Bubbly. But after uproar from fans, which included a dedicated online campaign, it returned to shops permanently in 2008. Over the years, Wispa has taken many forms, including orange, strawberry, Wispaccino, and of course, the long-reigning Gold. In second place was Caramac, which was discontinued in 2023 after 64 years, while 1 in 5 (18%) still miss the Cadbury Dream, which was discontinued back in 2002. Shoppers previously went wild after it was briefly spotted in B&M, but now, the only UK alternative is the Cadbury White (launched in 2019). And if you happen to find yourself in Australia, New Zealand or South Africa, the elusive Dream is still sold there. A sweet combination of milk chocolate and white, the Cadbury Marble was selected by 16% of respondents to the Smooth Spins Casino survey, having disappeared from shelves back in 2012. In joint fourth was also the nostalgic Orange Crunchie, a tangy version of the honeycomb classic. It's no secret that chocolate fiends have long been lusting for the Wispa Mint's return. Over on the r/CasualUK Subreddit, @Gueld recalled the sweet snack being their 'go to' chocolate back in the day – even going as far as to label it 'far superior to an Aero.' @Loose_beef felt that Wispas in general are a 'criminally underrated' choice, while @ChrisRR called for the return of the Mint classic, labelling even the highly esteemed Wispa Gold 's*** by comparison.' Bold words. @charlotteypants has always felt they were 'epic' – and continues to 'mourn' the loss to this day. Meanwhile, @Yachting-Mishaps wondered whether the Wispa Mint 'needs to exist in a world that already has Mint Aero.' By way of reply, @iwasfeelingallfloopy reckons that the flavour in the Wispa was 'different (i.e. better)' and 'more of a creamy layer.' Though Cadbury hasn't confirmed any plans to revive the Wispa Mint, there are plenty of success stories where chocolate brands have decided to give previously axed favourites another go. First launched in 2003, White Chocolate Maltesers were a fan favourite before being discontinued in 2014. People spent more than a decade begging for their return, and in June, those prayers were finally answered as the treat returned to shelves. They're now available in treat, single and sharing bar formats, both at major supermarkets and independent retailers. More Trending And, after Mars admitted that it 'made a mistake' and an online petition totalling more than 8,600 signatures, the Milky Way Crispy Rolls made a comeback earlier this year. A milk chocolate-covered wafer biscuit finger, inside, it's filled with light whip, and has been dubbed 'god's gift' and the 'best chocolate bar ever' by doting fans. The brand also added two new Crispy Roll flavours to the line-up, including Twix Crispy Rolls and Bounty Crispy Rolls. Do you have a story to share?
