‘Bit of karma!' How did Glenn McGrath get injured during the famous 2005 Ashes that England won?
On the morning of the second Test at Edgbaston after he had won the man of the match award in the first game, McGrath had slipped on a ball lying on the ground, and was ruled out. But here is the story behind that injury, with 'karma' according to Nigel Stockill (England strength and conditioning coach), and England's physio Kirk Russell.
'The Australians started a childish turf war before play every morning. It cost them in the end,' Stockill has now told the UK newspaper Telegraph.
Russell explained what happened during the first Test at Lord's during training sessions.
'Fletch [Duncan Fletcher, the England head coach] had got word that Australia would warm up where we normally warm up on the outfield at Lord's. We got there before 8am and sure enough they had been in and laid their cones out. By the time the guys wanted to bowl, the Aussies were out warming up close to the wicket. Ashley Giles wanted a bowl. I would take a mitt and Ash said politely to the Aussies 'can you just move a bit because we want to bowl?' Fair to say their response was not 'good morning, yes of course'. It was basically 'f— you'. Anyway it was the most high-pressure mitting experience I ever had because I had a couple of the Aussie guys by my feet. The fun and games started early on.'
Russell claims that Australia's captain Ricky Ponting wasn't that nice to him during the first Test at Lord's. 'I would say 'good morning' to Ricky Ponting every day and I would get nothing back. Just silence. I always found that really weird. Perhaps he thought it was showing weakness to say hello to a physio.'
When the caravan moved to Edgbaston for the second Test, there was more drama in store. The S&C coach Stockill takes up the story here.
'When we went to Edgbaston, they decided they would have our side of the pitch to train on again. Buchanan put balls out to mark their territory rather than plastic cones. It was one of those balls that McGrath stood on. There is a bit of karma there. They tried to upset the balance of things and if ever there was a backfire, that was it.'
McGrath was taken to hospital for a scan that revealed two ruptured ligaments and bone damage in his right ankle. Later he would talk about the moment. 'It was tough sitting there watching,' he says.
'Not so much that we lost, but I always wonder what positive impact could I have had on the team. It's not so much the bowling impact, it's the impact on the mental state of the opposition. All of a sudden, I'm not playing. I'd bowled well at Lord's, then I'm out, which gives a lift to the opposition that wouldn't have been there otherwise,' he had told BBC.
It was McGrath's replacement Michael Kasprowicz who became the last wicket to fall in that thriller. Kasprowicz had made 20 in a 59-run partnership with Brett Lee when he gloved a Steve Harmison bouncer down the leg side to give England victory by two runs.
'If we had got those last three runs, it would have killed the series there and then,' said McGrath. 'England's confidence would have been shattered.'

IND vs ENG: Shubman Gill creates history, breaks Virat Kohli's record by...
Shubman Gill in action at Manchester Test. (PIC - PTI) New Delhi: The England tour is Shubman Gill's first Test series as captain and he has broken many records in this series. On Saturday, he created history by breaking Virat Kohli's record in India's second innings in the ongoing fourth Test at Old Trafford in Manchester. What record did Shubman Gill break? Breaking Virat Kohli's record, he has become the Indian captain to score the most runs in a Test series against England. During the India-England Test series in 2016, Kohli played a total of five matches and scored 655 runs with the help of two centuries and two half-centuries. What's happening at the Manchester Test? Gill, who scored only 12 runs in the first innings of the Manchester Test, needed 37 runs in the second innings to overtake Kohli and he achieved this by hitting a four off Jofra Archer in the 17th over during the second session of the fourth day's play. Yashasvi Jaiswal holds the overall record for scoring the most runs for India in a Test series against England. During the five-match Test series between India and England in 2024, Jaiswal scored a total of 712 runs in five matches. Gill will have to score 55 more runs in the current match to break Jaiswal's record and achieve the number 1 position. Whose record is Shubman Gill chasing? Sunil Gavaskar holds the record of the Indian captain scoring the most runs in a Test series. During the India-West Indies Test series in 1978-79, Gavaskar played six matches and scored 732 runs. To break this record, Gill will have to score at least 114 runs in the second innings of the current Test. Gill scored a double century and two centuries in the first two Test matches of the current series against England. He has scored a half-century in the second innings of the Manchester Test.

Stokes slams 141 as Eng rattle India at lunch
Manchester, July 26 (UNI) England produced a dominant batting display on Day 4 of the fourth Test at Old Trafford, declaring their authority with a massive total of 669 in 157.1 overs, thanks to Ben Stokes' heroic 141 and Brydon Carse's entertaining 47. India, in their second innings, suffered a double blow before lunch, reaching a precarious 1/2 in just 3 overs. Resuming at 544/7, England raced past the 550-mark in the 137th over as Stokes began the morning session with aggressive intent. The England skipper registered his 14th Test hundred off 164 balls, playing a captain's knock just a day after claiming a five-wicket haul—an all-round feat not seen from him in nearly three years. His century was brought up with a stylish leg glance, followed by a helmet-off tribute to his late father, drawing emotional applause from spectators. Stokes then unleashed a flurry of strokes: sixes over long-off and long-on, reverse sweeps, and back-foot punches, displaying brute power and finesse in equal measure. He smashed 11 fours and 3 sixes in his 198-ball knock before falling to Ravindra Jadeja, caught by Sai Sudharsan at long-on while attempting another big hit. Brydon Carse added crucial lower-order runs, clobbering two sixes and three fours in his entertaining 47 off 54 balls. His intent was clear—charging down to smash Washington Sundar and Jadeja over the ropes. His innings ended when he miscued a slog-sweep off Jadeja, with Siraj holding a comfortable catch at deep backward square. Jadeja cleaned up the tail with key wickets, finishing with figures that reflected his persistence through the innings. Jasprit Bumrah too chipped in, dismissing Liam Dawson with a sharp delivery that stayed low and knocked back off stump. India's response was nightmarish. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudarshan were both dismissed for ducks, leaving the visitors at 1/2 in just 3 overs. KL Rahul (1*) and Shubman Gill (0*) were at the crease at lunch, with the massive English total looming over them like a mountain. With a deficit of 353 runs and eight wickets in hand, India face a herculean task to save this match. India heads code 358 in their first innings. UNI BDN RN

Kapil Dev chooses Ravindra Jadeja over Ben Stokes as top all-rounder; says 'I think he is performing far better'
Kapil Dev, India's first World Cup-winning captain, recently picked his preferred all-rounder in a comparison between Ravindra Jadeja and Ben Stokes. Speaking at the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) event, he also gave his take on Jasprit Bumrah's fitness, Shubman Gill's captaincy in the ongoing Test match against England, and an ambitious 2025 schedule for the PGTI. Ravindra Jadeja, known for his lethal left-arm spin, lower-order batting, and exceptional fielding, has been a mainstay in India's Test lineup. Ben Stokes, England's star all-rounder, is celebrated for his game-changing performances, including heroics in the 2019 World Cup and Ashes. Kapil Dev commended both Ravindra Jadeja and Ben Stokes for their all-round prowess, but when pressed to choose, he declared Jadeja the better all-rounder. 'He (Ben Stokes) is a good all-rounder, but I still feel Ravindra Jadeja is better. I think he is still performing far better,' Kapil said. Kapil also addressed concerns about Jasprit Bumrah's fitness after the pacer struggled on Day 3 of the fourth Test against England in Manchester on July 26, 2025. He, however, praised Bumrah's ability to perform despite challenges, saying, 'I was surprised by the way Jasprit Bumrah has delivered for the national team so well, despite having such a difficult action that takes so much toll on his body.' He urged fans to trust Bumrah's proven track record in crucial moments. With Rohit Sharma absent, Shubman Gill has stepped up as India's Test captain, but his leadership faced scrutiny after a poor team showing in Manchester. Kapil called for patience, emphasizing Gill's potential to grow. 'Give him time. This is his first series; he will commit mistakes, and there will be many positives over the period of time, he will learn,' Kapil said. He added, 'This is a young team, they are getting the opportunity to play, and in the coming days, these players will win. Any new team in the world takes time to adjust.' As PGTI President, Kapil Dev unveiled an exciting 2025 calendar at the Delhi Golf Club, featuring 15 tournaments with a ₹ 33 crore prize pool. The season will begin with the ₹ 1 crore Coal India Open in Ahmedabad on August 3. Two events in Dwarka, Delhi, and Jamshedpur offer ₹ 2 crore each, while three NextGen tournaments in Patna, Lucknow, and Bhubaneswar provide ₹ 20 lakh each. The DP World India Championship, set for October 16-19 at the Delhi Golf Club, boasts a USD 4 million purse, nearly ₹ 35 crore. Kapil stressed enhancing golfers' earnings, given their 15-year career span. 'From next year, we want to have events with a minimum prize money of two crore rupees,' he said. The 2025 prize money is ₹ 8 crore higher than last year's, reflecting growth.
