Dewan Rakyat extends condolences on passing of Tun Abdullah
Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul, in conveying the condolences, described Abdullah as a statesman and a great leader with a big heart who contributed a lot to the country.
'Indeed, his death is a great loss and deeply felt by all levels of society in this country,' he said.
He then invited members of the Senate and the Parliament to stand, with the Muslims to recite the Al-Fatihah and the non-Muslims to observe a minute of silence.
The special sitting was convened at the request of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for him to explain the government's plans and measures to address the reciprocal tariffs imposed by the United States.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister, in his speech before commencing the information session, described Abdullah as a key figure who had initiated several early reforms, including those involving the Malaysian Parliament.
He said Abdullah's excellent service to the country would continue to be remembered throughout history.
'I would like to express my condolences to the family (of Tun Abdullah), the people of Penang and Kepala Batas. The country has paid the highest tribute to him with a state funeral, with his remains laid to rest at the Heroes' Mausoleum (at the National Mosque),' he said.

Umno must accept reality that it can't go solo
GEORGE TOWN: Umno must accept that long-term survival in Malaysian politics now depends on strategic alliances, not solo ambition, said party vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin. He said that since the founding of Barisan Nasional (BN), Umno had never operated on its own, and its strength had always depended on the support of its component parties. "No matter how great our leaders are, if any party in the BN coalition fails to bring in support from its community, we will lose. "So, we must accept that no party is dominant anymore. "We must carefully consider who we should work with. "This is the age of flexibility. When Umno works with the unity government, it is merely a strategic and tactical shift, not a change in principle or values. "Our core principles of championing the Malays and Islam remain unchanged. "Remember, no political alliance is permanent. "But our struggle, our ideology, remains. "What changes are the strategy and tactics," he said at the 2025 Bukit Gelugor Umno division delegates' meeting today. Khaled, who is also the defence minister, said Umno must choose its political partners wisely ahead of the 16th general election (GE16), expected in 2027, and that groundwork must begin now to secure the party's position. "If we win big, only then should we decide who to 'marry'. "We need wisdom, strategy, and tactics, just as we have begun laying the groundwork ahead of the upcoming state elections. "The question of who we work with shouldn't be rushed, it doesn't mean we must immediately embrace DAP. "Political alliances don't last forever. "But we must aim to win big so we can shape the government that emerges after GE16. "I don't even know where we'll end up, but what's important is that we are part of the government, because only then can we realise and fulfil our struggle," he said. He said the party leadership had never forgotten the contributions and sacrifices of former prime minister and Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak. Khaled said the party had not given up efforts to defend Najib's cause, but remained committed to upholding the royal institution and the Federal Constitution. He said any action must be carried out wisely and respectfully to avoid offending any party, warning that rash decisions could set a bad precedent for others. "The matter of the Addendum Decree involves the royal institution and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. We must act wisely and respectfully towards our monarchy. "If we fail to safeguard this, other communities may take it as a cue in how they deal with our rulers. "That is why our secretary-general's (Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki) statement was issued with the utmost decorum, to avoid offending any party. "When it comes to matters not involving the monarchy, I truly believe no one can match the strength, passion and commitment of Umno's leaders," he said.

Zahid to embark on working visit to New Zealand, focusing on bilateral ties
AUCKLAND: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will be on a five-day working visit to New Zealand starting tomorrow until July 18. The Malaysian High Commissioner to New Zealand, Mazita Marzuki said Zahid's visit is part of the government's ongoing commitment to further strengthen bilateral diplomatic relations that have been established for 68 years with New Zealand. The visit, she said, focuses on exploring opportunities for strategic cooperation covering various fields including defence, agriculture, education, halal industry as well as strategic cooperation. "This visit is expected to further strengthen the long-standing Malaysia-New Zealand bilateral relations across various areas of cooperation. "It also symbolises the continuation of the highest-level exchange of visits between the two countries, including the working visit by former Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir on May 2 to 4 in 2023," she said at a press conference here today. Obviously, it includes the continuation of the working visit by former Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters, cum Foreign Minister of New Zealand to Malaysia on June 6-9 2024; as well as the official visit of New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon to Malaysia on Sept 1-3 2024. Zahid will also be accompanied by a delegation consisting of senior Malaysian government officials from the Foreign Ministry, the Rural and Regional Development Ministry and the Prime Minister's Department. Mazita said that among the main contents of Zahid's visit are meetings with New Zealand's top leaders on July 16–17 in Wellington. He is expected to meet New Zealand's Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro and Deputy Prime Minister David Seymour, Foreign Minister Winston Peters, Maori Development Minister Tama Potaka as well as Agriculture, Trade and Investment Minister Todd McClay. The visit will also include Zahid's participation as chairman of the Halal Industry Development Council (MPIH) in a halal forum jointly organised by the New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) which will witness the signing of a cooperation document between Malaysia and New Zealand on higher education. "In addition, it will also involve engagement sessions with New Zealand industry and business leaders including the ASEAN New Zealand Business Council (ANZBC) and the New Zealand Trade and Enterprise Corporation (NZTE)," she said. Zahid, who is also the chairman of the Central Disaster Management Committee (JPBP), will be visiting National Crisis Management Centre and will hold a Roundtable Session with the Māori community in Rotorua, she said. Zahid will also meet 250 members of the Malaysian community in New Zealand who are residents of the country. "This visit is seen as very much in line with Malaysia's role as Asen Chair for 2025. "It provides an opportunity for the Malaysian government to share initial achievements, directions and priorities under the theme of "Inclusivity and Sustainability" within the Asean regional framework. "This visit thus reflects the government's commitment to strengthening diplomatic relations, promoting national interests and strengthening strategic cooperation between Malaysia and New Zealand," she said. The last time a Malaysian top leader visited New Zealand was the late Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi who was the prime minister at the time in March 2005.

National Consumer Policy 2.0 to be finalised by year-end: Armizan

PENAMPANG: The drafting of the National Consumer Policy (DPN) 2.0 is in its final phase and is expected to be finalised by year-end, said Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali. He said DPN 2.0 would serve as the main reference for all stakeholders in implementing consumer-related initiatives and programmes nationwide from 2026 to 2030. Armizan said the policy would also outline the roles and responsibilities of all stakeholders, including those indirectly involved with consumer affairs. 'The relationship between these various stakeholders is crucial to ensuring effective implementation of consumer protection laws and the dissemination of accurate, comprehensive information to help create empowered Malaysian consumers,' he said in his speech at the 2025 Consumerism Festival here today. Themed 'Semarak Konsumerisme', the three-day festival, which concluded today, marked the highlight of the 2025 National Consumer Day celebration and drew participation from school and university students nationwide. The programme was organised as a key platform to gather recommendations and views on DPN 2.0, which will serve as part of the input in finalising the formulation of the consumer policy. Armizan said DPN 2.0 was also designed to enhance preparedness in addressing current challenges within the consumer ecosystem, including weaknesses in regulatory and enforcement aspects, as well as low consumer literacy levels that were prone to exploitation. He said other challenges included the use of products that did not comply with safety standards or were not environmentally friendly, fraudulent transactions, and the misuse of digital technology, particularly artificial intelligence. According to him, DPN 2.0 would also place emphasis on cost of living issues through an inclusive and responsive approach, including the implementation of the Payung Rahmah Madani Programme, broader use of the Ihsan Madani Portal as a reference for price and essential goods information, and the application of cost of living indicators to guide consumer spending. Meanwhile, Armizan said the Kita Pengguna Squad (Skip) would be mobilised as a bridge between the government and the people in addressing consumerism issues in a more responsive and inclusive manner, forming the foundation for the effective implementation of DPN 2.0.
