Bravery award for man, 84, who fought off mugger
A pensioner who fought off a mugger with the help of a pair of jeans has been commended for his bravery. Ron Croker was on his own at the Coin-Op Launderette in Maltby, Rotherham, on 7 January when a masked Lloyd Smith burst in and demanded his wallet. Mr Croker, 84, wrapped a pair of jeans around his arm to protect him from any potential weapons and shoved Smith, 42, back through the door. This week, Mr Croker was presented with a commendation for his "tremendous courage" in fighting off Smith, who has since been jailed for the attack. Mr Croker suffered bruises to his hands and arm but otherwise escaped without losing his wallet or any other items. He previously told the BBC he had worked "all my life" for his money and decided Smith was "not having it". Rotherham District Commander Ch Supt Andy Wright said Mr Croker's actions had been "nothing short of remarkable". "We often talk about police officers running towards danger when others run away from it," he said. "In this instance, Ron did neither. He stood his ground, fought for what is right and showed tremendous courage when it would have been easy not to." According to South Yorkshire Police, Smith was identified by members of the public after CCTV footage of the attack was publicised. Smith, of Myrtle Grove, Rotherham, pleaded guilty to attempted robbery and was jailed for three years and nine months at Sheffield Crown Court in June. Beyoncé's Unreleased Music Files, Tour Materials Stolen Before Atlanta ‘Cowboy Carter' Show
Beyoncé's unreleased music may have fallen into the wrong hands as a vehicle was robbed before the Atlanta stop of her Cowboy Carter Tour. The break-in was reported by Bey's choreographer and one of her dancers, who said thieves broke into their SUV and stole several items. The perpetrators took two suitcases, jump drives containing unreleased music, footage plans for the Houston superstar's show, past and future set lists, and more, per WSB-TV. According to local police, the incident happened around 8 p.m. on July 8, 2025, inside a parking deck at 44 Krog Street NE. This places the event just 48 hours prior to the mother of three kicking off her ATL shows. A reporter for the outlet learned Monday evening (July 14) that an arrest warrant has been issued for a suspect. Christopher Grant and Diandre Blue reported the crime to the authorities. They said someone broke in through the back lift gate and robbed their rental black Jeep Wagoneer while it was stationed in a parking deck around 8:09 p.m. Detectives confirmed to WSB-TV that the break-in was captured on surveillance cameras, and the scene was dusted for fingerprints. No suspects have been identified. 'Mr. Grant advised he was also carrying some personal sensitive information for the musician Beyoncé,' an officer wrote in the incident report.'He advised he was her choreographer and Mr. Diandre Blue was a dancer for her and that her hard drives for her upcoming show in Atlanta were stolen also. The hard drives contained water marked music, some un-released music, footage plans for the show and past and future set lists,' the officer added in the police report. Other members of Bey's team reported clothes, designer sunglasses, laptops, and a pair of AirPods Max headphones were stolen from the vehicle as well. Additionally, Bey's Atlanta show made headlines due to a rare moment with husband JAY-Z on stage. Hov made his second Cowboy Carter Tour appearance in Atlanta on Sunday (July 13), where they performed 'Crazy In Love' together and the NYC rapper treated fans to a rendition of 'Public Service Announcement.' He Wanted a Rare Mustang. When the Seller Backed Out, the Buyer Came Back with a Gun
NEED TO KNOW Alexander Lee Smith was sentenced last Friday to two consecutive life sentences for the Nov. 2023 murders of Walter Mitchell and Susie Ephrem Smith shot and killed the couple inside their Peoria, Ariz., home after a deal to buy Mitchell's rare Mustang fell through Smith had twice tried to convince police he had purchased the car from Mitchell before investigators grew suspicious, leading to his confession and arrest a year laterAn Arizona man has received two consecutive life sentences for murdering a couple in 2023 who owned a car that he wanted to purchase, one day after their transaction fell through. The Maricopa County Attorney's Office announced the sentencing last Friday, detailing how investigators were able to tie Alexander Lee Smith to the November 2023 double homicide. According to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office, the 21-year-old man 'forced his way' into the home of Walter Mitchell and Susie Ephrem and shot both of them. Ephrem was able to call 911 but later died from her wounds at a local hospital, while Mitchell died at the scene. The couple's 8-year-old grandson was also home during the deadly break-in but wasn't harmed, according to officials. Prosecutors say Smith met the couple after becoming interested in purchasing Mitchell's Ford Shelby GT500, a high-performance version of a Mustang. Smith was set to buy the luxury car, but Mitchell called off the sale after the 21-year-old's wire transfer did not go through, according to authorities. That night, Mitchell sold the car to a local car dealership, authorities said. The next day, Smith broke into the couple's home and fatally shot them both. Authorities were still investigating the scene when Smith showed up the next day, telling officers that he worked for a car collector who had purchased the car from Mitchell. Officers turned Smith away, but two weeks later, the 21-year-old man showed up again at the Peoria police station and inquired about the car. The attorney's office said officers realized Smith's story didn't match up with what he'd told detectives at the scene two weeks earlier, and they grew suspicious. GPS records from Smith's phone placed him near the scene on the night of the killings, while detectives were also able to match his fingerprints to the front door handle of the couple's home. Smith was arrested in November 2024 and later pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder, as well as one count of first-degree burglary. 'This was an act driven by greed; even after taking two lives, this defendant continued to lie to police to try to get the car,' Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said in a statement last week. 'Thanks to Peoria Police and MCAO prosecutors, his story unraveled, and he will spend the rest of his life facing the consequences of his choices.'
