Two killed in temple frenzy, say police

The Star28-07-2025
At least two people were killed when a crowd panicked after an electric wire snapped outside a temple in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, authorities said.
A group of monkeys jumped onto an electric wire outside the Ausaneshwar Mahadev Temple in the Barabanki region, causing it to snap and fall on a shed, triggering panic, District Magistrate Shashank Tripathi said.
Nineteen people were electrocuted and injured, he said.
'Two people were killed today in a stampede-like situation (at the temple) early in the morning,' a senior police officer, who did not want to be named, said.
The incident occurred around 2am local time on Sunday, the area's chief medical officer said, when some people at the temple 'came in contact' with the electric wire, causing panic.
Accidents involving large crowds are not uncommon at religious gatherings in India, and are often blamed on poor crowd management.
At least 30 people were killed in a pre-dawn crowd crush at the Maha Kumbh festival in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj in January, as tens of millions gathered to take a dip in sacred river waters on its most auspicious day.
Six people were killed in a stampede in neighbouring Uttarakhand state on Sunday, where a crowd gathered to pray at the Mansa Devi temple. — Reuters

NYC faces $64 million security fund cut amid rising threats

WASHINGTON: The Trump administration announced a $64 million reduction in terrorism prevention funding for New York City, according to a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grant notice. The decision follows a recent deadly shooting in Manhattan, raising concerns over security priorities. FEMA stated the funding cut is based on 'an analysis of relative risk of terrorism.' New York City's allocation from the Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) has declined annually since 2022, with this year's reduction marking a sharp 41% drop. Manhattan has witnessed two high-profile attacks in the past year, including a July incident where a gunman killed four people in an office building housing the NFL and financial firms. 'It makes absolutely no sense to cut NY's allocation given the rise in the threat environment,' a New York State Division of Homeland Security spokesperson said. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) defended the move, claiming NYC had unspent counter-terrorism funds from prior years. Reuters could not verify this assertion. Governor Kathy Hochul previously questioned the delay in funding announcements, citing escalating risks. FEMA's risk assessment factors include visitor counts, population density, and proximity to borders. NYC previously used UASI funds for the Domain Awareness System, a surveillance network of cameras and detection devices. - Reuters

Ghislaine Maxwell opposes release of Epstein grand jury transcripts

NEW YORK: Ghislaine Maxwell, convicted in 2021 for aiding Jeffrey Epstein's sexual abuse of minors, has opposed the U.S. government's push to release grand jury transcripts tied to her indictment. Her legal team warned that disclosure could harm a potential retrial if her Supreme Court appeal succeeds. Maxwell is currently serving a 20-year sentence. 'The reputational harm from releasing incomplete, potentially misleading grand jury testimony, untested by cross-examination, would be severe and irrevocable,' her lawyers stated in a court filing. The request follows former President Donald Trump's directive to Attorney General Pam Bondi to seek the release of Epstein and Maxwell's grand jury records, aiming to address criticism over his administration's handling of the case. Trump, who vowed to publicize Epstein-related documents if re-elected, accused Democrats of concealing facts. However, the Justice Department later clarified that a widely speculated Epstein client list did not exist, frustrating his supporters. Epstein died in jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. Grand jury proceedings are typically confidential to protect investigations. The Justice Department argues that public interest justifies releasing the transcripts, pending approval from Manhattan judges Richard Berman and Paul Engelmayer. Lawyers for Epstein's estate took no position, while victims' attorneys emphasized the need to protect identities if disclosures occur. 'The public has a legitimate interest in understanding the full scope of Epstein's and Maxwell's crimes,' said Sigrid McCawley, representing Annie Farmer, a victim who testified against Maxwell. Meanwhile, Maxwell's legal team contends her conviction is invalid due to a 2007 non-prosecution agreement involving Epstein's associates. The Supreme Court will decide in late September whether to hear her appeal. In a recent development, Deputy U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche met Maxwell to discuss potential information on other perpetrators, though details remain undisclosed. Maxwell was recently transferred to a lower-security Texas prison. - Reuters

Ireland demands release of hostages after Haiti orphanage attack

PORT-AU-PRINCE: Ireland has called on Haitian authorities to take urgent action to secure the release of hostages, including an Irish missionary and a 3-year-old child, after armed attackers stormed an orphanage in Kenscoff. Irish Foreign Minister Simon Harris held discussions with his Haitian counterpart, emphasising the need for immediate efforts to free the group. 'It is imperative that she is released immediately,' Harris stated on social media, referring to missionary Gena Heraty, who leads special needs programs at the orphanage. The attack occurred over the weekend when gunmen targeted the facility run by Nos Petits Freres et Soeurs, an international charity. Father Richard Frechette, associated with the organisation, confirmed eight people were abducted, including Heraty, six staff members, and the young boy. 'We have not yet been able to reach a ransom agreement to free them,' Frechette told Reuters. Haiti has faced escalating violence from armed gangs, with religious and aid groups frequently targeted. A recent U.N. report highlighted the 'very volatile' situation in Kenscoff, a strategically important area overlooking Petion-Ville, where multiple embassies and financial institutions are located. BINUH estimates over 3,100 people were killed and 336 kidnapped in Haiti in the first half of 2025, with gang violence displacing 1.3 million residents. Despite a U.N.-backed mission, authorities struggle to curb gang dominance, particularly from the Viv Ansanm coalition. Nos Petits Freres et Soeurs reaffirmed its commitment to Haiti, stating, 'We hope for their fast and safe return. Our commitment to the Haitian people remains as strong as ever.' - Reuterspix
