DraftKings to Introduce Transaction Fee in Illinois

DraftKings to Introduce Transaction Fee in Illinois

Business Upturn13-06-2025

BOSTON, June 12, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — In response to the recent and prior sports wagering tax increases passed by the Illinois state legislature on all mobile and online sports wagers placed with licensed operators, DraftKings Inc. (Nasdaq: DKNG) today announced that it will implement a 50-cent transaction fee on all mobile and online bets placed in Illinois through DraftKings Sportsbook, effective September 1, 2025.
'Illinois has been an important part of our growth, and we're proud to have contributed meaningfully to the state through tax revenue, job creation, and a sustained investment in responsible gaming tools and resources,' said Jason Robins, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of DraftKings. 'We are disappointed that Illinois policymakers have chosen to more than triple our tax rate over the past two years, and we are very concerned about what this will do to the legal, regulated industry. Meanwhile, Illinois continues to fuel the rapidly growing illegal industry, which pays no taxes or fees and provides none of the consumer protections that regulated operators offer.'
DraftKings continues to support collaborative policymaking that works for the state and allows for the long-term sustainability of the industry. Should the legislation be repealed, the company will immediately remove the Illinois-specific per wager transaction fee.

Apple stock: Analyst flags AI concerns, warns of downside risk ahead of earnings

-- Apple faces significant uncertainty ahead of its fiscal third-quarter earnings, with MoffettNathanson warning that the coming report 'will be unusually difficult to make sense of.' The firm reiterated a Sell rating and a $139 price target on the stock, citing multiple unresolved issues ranging from tariffs and China discounting to AI strategy and potential fallout from regulatory rulings. 'In the U.S., it appears that our anticipation of a pull-forward of demand to beat potential price increases on Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) products in response to tariffs has been borne out,' MoffettNathanson said, noting that iPhone unit volumes in April and May were up double digits year over year. However, they note that revenue may not keep pace due to weaker average selling prices. On China, the firm observed that while iPhone volumes spiked in May, average selling prices 'appear to have been cut dramatically' as Apple discounted Pro models to align with local government subsidies, another move that may have front-loaded demand. The firm also said investors face uncertainty around Apple's Services revenue. 'It will reflect a month and a half or so of impacts from the Epic Games ruling… Will those impacts show up in the numbers, or is it still too early to say?' MoffettNathanson asked. Perhaps most pressing is Apple's AI positioning, according to MoffettNathanson. The firm said Apple is still seen as 'rudderless in AI' and may consider 'buying an answer' to its perceived shortcomings, further muddying the near-term outlook. 'With the asymmetry of the risks, we'd argue for lower estimates,' the firm wrote. 'To date, the market has supplied little of either.' MoffettNathanson warned that 'greater uncertainty ought to mean lower multiples,' underscoring downside risk for the stock. 5 Best-Performing ETF Areas of June

Wall Street posted solid gains in June, with the S&P 500 rising 4.4%, the Dow Jones up 3.66%, and the Nasdaq climbing 6% over the past month (as of June 27, 2025). The tech boom mainly led to the rally. The month was marked by geopolitical tensions, particularly between Israel and Iran, which pushed oil prices higher. However, a ceasefire later on in the month helped calm markets. The United States Oil Fund USO jumped 9% over the past month, reflecting the surge in crude prices. U.S. economic data remained mixed. Inflation edged up slightly in May to 2.4%, the first increase in four months, but still below expectations of 2.5%. Meanwhile, the U.S. economy contracted at an annualized rate of 0.5% in Q1 2025. This marked a sharper decline than the previously estimated 0.2% drop and the first contraction in three years. Retail sales fell 0.9% in May, following a modest 0.1% decline in April, amid the ongoing economic uncertainty and trade tensions. President Trump struck a trade deal with China, offering a rare moment of optimism in global trade dynamics. However, tensions between Trump and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell escalated. Trump is reportedly considering naming Powell's replacement as early as September, criticizing him for not cutting interest rates aggressively. Powell defended the Fed's 'wait and see' approach, citing the need to assess the impact of recent tariffs. In equity markets, several key stocks made headlines. Coinbase shares soared about 42% over the past month, fueled by news of its entry into the stablecoin market and optimism around crypto trading volumes. NVIDIA also rallied over 13%, driven by strong earnings and resilience despite new export bans to China. Globally, the Bank of Japan announced plans to gradually slow its bond purchases starting April 2026, while keeping its benchmark rate unchanged at 0.5%. The BOJ cited rising risks to economic growth and aims to reduce Japanese Government Bond (JGB) purchases to around 2 trillion yen per month by early 2027, down from 3 trillion currently. Against this backdrop, below we highlight a few winning exchange-traded fund (ETF) areas of the month of June. Platinum GraniteShares Platinum Trust (PLTM) – Up 23.2% Platinum has surged more than 50% in 2025, driven by supply shortages and rising Chinese imports. Korea Defense PLUS Korea Defense Industry Index ETF (KDEF) – Up 21.7% The underlying Korea Defense Industry Index is designed to track the performance of South Korean companies that have demonstrated a high relevance to defense. The fund charges 65 bps in fees. Korean defense stocks have seen a surge over the past year, as the companies secured a number of major international contracts to export their defense systems. Broad Developed World ARK Innovation ETF (ARKK) – Up 20.3% Cathie Wood's ARK Innovation has again started to glow. The standout performers among ARKK's top holdings have recently been Coinbase and Roblox. Bitcoin Miners CoinShares Valkyrie Bitcoin Miners ETF (WGMI) – Up 19% Bitcoin prices were volatile in the month, with about flat return month-wise. However, Bitcoin miners were in great shape. The fund's top holding IREN Ltd. jumped 62.8% over the past month. The second holding, Core Scientific, surged 55.8%. These two stocks take about 30% of the fund. Hydrogen Global X Hydrogen ETF (HYDR) – Up 18.6% The Solactive Global Hydrogen Index provides exposure to companies that are positioned to benefit from further advancements in the field of hydrogen technology. Brigil announces $950m Espace Canevas community project in Canada

Real-estate company Brigil has unveiled the Espace Canevas community project to revitalise an urban hub in Québec, Canada, with an investment of approximately C$1.3bn ($950m). The Espace Canevas community project is poised to transform the former Village Cartier shopping centre into an inclusive and sustainable living space. The development will feature up to 2,600 residential units, as well as 192,000ft² of commercial space and 182,000ft² of office space. Its design focuses on stimulating the local economy, enhancing connectivity, and prioritising green spaces and active mobility. Brigil development vice-president Jessy Desjardins said: "What we are proposing with the Espace Canevas community is the redefinition of our urban spaces for the benefit of the Gatineau-Ottawa population. "Reflecting the ambitions of the neighborhood, the project offers a second life to the Village Cartier shopping centre and demonstrates the immense potential for transforming large commercial spaces to increase the number of available units in the context of a housing crisis.' Located complementarily to Gatineau, Espace Canevas aims to integrate with its surroundings. The approach includes varying building heights to ensure the space remains open. The move comes after six years of transformation, design, and community engagement. Desjardins added: "We held working sessions with architects, urban planners, and Canadian and Danish experts to identify concrete ways to improve the quality of life for the population within real-estate projects. "We return from these visits more motivated than ever, and Brigil intends to continue playing a leading role in redefining the social function of public spaces in the region.' The Espace Canevas project will offer a diverse range of rental housing options, fostering a neighbourhood life with accessible green spaces and community places. The design prioritises mobility for pedestrians and cyclists, featuring trees and an integrated rainwater management system visible in the landscape. The project plans also include local businesses such as cafés and restaurants.
