Starbucks plans kiosks to cut long lines at airport locations

[CHICAGO] Starbucks is working on adding ordering kiosks to busy locations in the US that cater to on-the-go customers.
The Seattle-based coffee chain has been exploring how to shorten lines at high-traffic places such as airports, chief operating officer Mike Grams said in an internal meeting this week, according to a recording reviewed by Bloomberg News. Snaking queues of caffeine-deprived travellers are a common sight at terminals around the US.
'Kiosks is one of those options that is a big priority for quarter four,' he said, referring to the company's fiscal period that runs to late September.
The kiosks will likely go into select licensed locations, run by third parties that have an agreement with the company, that cater to people on the go. Baristas will still greet customers and hand their orders directly to them at stores with kiosks.
The setup of licensed stores varies, with some featuring seating while others do not. These locations, which are often inside airports, grocery stores, universities and hospitals, account for about 40 per cent of the chain's more than 17,000 US locations.
Starbucks announced in 2022 that it would introduce mobile ordering at airports, which mostly serve customers looking to get their drinks quickly as they make their way to their gates. Touchscreens allowing customers to place orders directly have proliferated at restaurants, including airport locations of chains such as McDonald's.

'Customer and partner feedback is fuelling rapid innovation across every Starbucks experience,' the company said in a statement, using its terminology for workers.
Starbucks directly runs more than 10,000 locations in the US. Chief executive officer Brian Niccol's team is working to make these company-operated stores more welcoming by adding more comfortable seating, more outlets for charging devices and creating a cosier atmosphere.
The overall strategy to reverse a prolonged sales slump also focuses on fostering more interactions between baristas and customers. The company is phasing out a pickup-only store format without seating that required customers to order on the app.
The ordering kiosks would not go into traditional company-operated locations, Grams said, where people are more likely to consume their beverages on site and hang out. 'But for those speedy, time-sensitive customers that are going through, it's a big one,' Grams said.
The company's shares declined 2.3 per cent this year to Thursday's close, lagging the 7.8 per cent rise in the S&P 500 Index. BLOOMBERG

Mr Johnson is the third former British prime minister to visit Taiwan, after Ms Liz Truss in 2023 and Mrs Margaret Thatcher in the 1990s, and his trip comes at a time when Britain and China are seeking to further stabilise ties as Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to visit Beijing later in 2025 Britain, like most countries, has no formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan but the two governments have close economic and culture exchanges. [BENGALURU] Growth in India's services sector accelerated to an 11-month high in July, driven by strong international demand and sustained domestic sales, a survey showed on Tuesday (Aug 5). The HSBC India Services Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI), compiled by S&P Global, inched up to 60.5 in July from 60.4 in June, confounding a preliminary estimate that showed a drop to 59.8. PMI readings above 50.0 indicate growth in activity on a monthly basis while those below point to a contraction. The latest reading showed the dominant services sector has been expanding for four years. The new export business sub-index, a key gauge of international demand, showed a marked acceleration in July, registering the second-strongest expansion in a year. Total new business remained robust despite easing slightly from June's pace, supported by advertising efforts and new client acquisitions. Among service categories, finance and insurance emerged as the top performer for both new orders and business activity, while real estate and business services recorded the slowest growth. China's services activity growth hits 14-month high in July: S&P PMI

[BEIJING] China's services activity expanded at its fastest pace in 14 months in July, fuelled by stronger demand, including a rise in new export orders, a private-sector survey showed on Tuesday (Aug 5). The S&P Global China General Services PMI rose to 52.6 in July from 50.6 the previous month, marking the fastest pace since May last year. The 50-mark separates expansion from contraction. The reading contrasted with China's official survey, which showed services activity edging down slightly to 50 in July from 50.1 in June. The S&P PMI is considered a better read of trends among smaller, export-oriented firms, particularly along the east coast, while the official PMI primarily tracks large and medium-sized enterprises, including state-owned companies. Meanwhile, the S&P China General Composite PMI dipped to 50.8 in July from 51.3 the previous month. China's economy, the world's second largest, slowed less than expected in the second quarter, helped by policy measures and factories leveraging the US-China trade truce to front-load shipments. However, concerns remain about the second half of the year as export momentum weakens, prices decline and consumer confidence remains subdued, partly hurt by a prolonged property market downturn. The new export orders sub-index rose for the first time in three months, bolstered by stronger tourism activity and more stable trade conditions. Last week, US and Chinese officials agreed to pursue an extension of their 90-day tariff truce after two days of what both sides called constructive talks in Stockholm. The survey showed that after reducing staffing levels in June, service providers increased employment at the quickest rate since July 2024, driven by higher workloads and improved confidence. This led to a slower accumulation of backlogged work. Rising costs for raw materials, fuel and salaries kept average input prices in expansion territory in July. As a result, service providers raised their selling prices for the first time in six months. With new business and activity on the rise, overall business confidence improved.
