The Ministry of Law (MinLaw) has taken enforcement action against four law firms and a lawyer for providing legal services for the purchase of properties in a $3-billion money laundering scandal which made headlines in 2023.
MinLaw, in a press release on 15 July, said it is supporting the Director of Legal Services (DLS) in "conducting inquiries into the law practices that were involved in the conveyancing of the real estate properties seized in an anti-money laundering operation in August 2023."
DLS has conducted investigations into 24 law practices – with 11 of these investigations concluded.
Here's a summary of the enforcement actions revealed:
Two law practices have been ordered to pay financial penalties of $30,000 and $100,000 respectively.
The DLS has issued a third law practice with a statutory notice of the intention to order that law practice to pay a financial penalty of $70,000. A final decision will be made upon receiving and considering the law practice's written representations, if any.
The DLS has privately reprimanded a fourth law practice.
A lawyer has been referred to the Law Society of Singapore for disciplinary action.
The DLS will not take further regulatory action against 7 other lwpractices.
The press note did not state the names of the law practices involved.
Singapore has stepped up efforts to cripple criminal operations selling drug-laced vapes known as Kpods, which typically contain etomidate or ketamine.
In one dramatic bust in Bishan Street 13, an officer from the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) dived into a car to stop an alleged dealer from speeding away. Once the man was detained, officers searched his car and found several white envelopes containing Kpods. The envelopes with the Kpods were marked for delivery.
In total, 28 vape devices and 814 vape pods were seized from the man's car. It is just one example of multiple HSA operations that happen in a week targeting the booming illegal trade in e-vaporisers.
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime warned in a recent report that organised crime groups were pushing drug-laced vapes in Asia – including Singapore.
The Straits Times also reported that public healthcare institutions have been told to record all suspected and confirmed etomidate-linked vaping cases.
Files containing Beyoncé's unreleased music was stolen from a car rented by the singer's choreographer and one of her dancers in Atlanta last week, according to police.
Two laptops and hard drives that contained watermarked music, unreleased music, footage plans and past and future set lists, were among the items listed in the police incident report.
The choreographer told officers that "he was also carrying some personal sensitive information for the musician Beyonce."
The Atlanta Police Department, in an online statement, said that a warrant had been issued for an unnamed suspect's arrest.

Both Singapore Airlines (SIA) and Scoot have checked the fuel switches of their Boeing 787 aircrafts, reports CNA.

A preliminary report on last month's Air India tragedy – which killed 260 people – concluded fuel to the engines of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner in the deadly crash was cut off moments after take-off.
US aviation regulator, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has said fuel control switches in Boeing aeroplanes are safe.
Two major commercial pilots' associations have rejected claims that human error caused the Air India crash.
The High Court has published its grounds of decision for dismissing Jeremiah Ng's appeal against his seven-year jail sentence for killing one person and injuring six others in a violent crash along Tampines Avenue 1 in December 2021.
The 36-year-old had gone out with this brother and two friends that night (23 December) and consumed four cans of beer before driving back from dinner. Ng reportedly hit speeds as high as 169kmh in his brother's red Mercedes-Benz during the journey. He lost control of the vehicle as he approached the junction of Tampines Avenue 1 and Tampines Avenue 10, smashing into a centre divider and crashing into traffic.
"It is plainly foolish and hazardous to drive in this manner on any occasion. Our public roads are not a racetrack," said the High Court in its dismissal of Ng's appeal.
A private-hire car driver was killed in the crash. Six others were injured – including a motorcyclist who was left with long-term disabilities.
Ng was sentenced in October 2023 after pleading guilty to one count of drink driving and another for causing death by driving in a dangerous manner.
One person was taken to hospital after a fire at Block 194 Kim Keat Avenue in Toa Payoh on 14 July.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said, in a Facebook post, that it responded to the fire at about 11.50am. "Upon arrival, one of the bedrooms in a 12th-floor unit was on fire. Firefighters entered the smoke-filled unit and extinguished the fire with a water jet," read a statement.
SCDF assessed two people for smoke inhalation with one being taken to the KK Women's and Children's Hospital. The other person declined to be taken to hospital.
Pictures from the incident showed the unit as well as the corridor area outside sustained heat and smoke damage.
Preliminary findings indicate the cause of the fire is likely from an electrical origin in a bedroom.

Her final project – 'In the Net' – is expected to be released posthumously.
A race at the World Aquatics Championships was postponed just hours before it was due to start after water quality levels in Sentosa failed to meet "acceptable thresholds", it was announced by organisers.
The women's open water 10km race at Sentosa was scheduled for 8am this morning (15 July) but has been pushed until tomorrow (16 July) "in the utmost interest of athlete safety."
"While testing in recent days has consistently shown water quality at the venue to meet World Aquatics' acceptable thresholds, analysis of samples taken on 13 July surpassed these thresholds," read a statement from World Aquatics. "The decision to postpone racing was made in the best interests of athlete health and safety, which remains World Aquatics and the Singapore 2025 Organising Committee's top priority."
It is unclear why tests on the water samples on 13 July exceeded quality thresholds

AM Best Revises Outlooks to Positive for The People's Insurance Company of China (Hong Kong), Limited
HONG KONG, July 18, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--AM Best has revised the outlooks to positive from stable and affirmed the Financial Strength Rating of A- (Excellent) and the Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating of "a-" (Excellent) of The People's Insurance Company of China (Hong Kong), Limited (PICC HK) (Hong Kong). The Credit Ratings (ratings) reflect PICC HK's balance sheet strength, which AM Best assesses as very strong, as well as its adequate operating performance, limited business profile and appropriate enterprise risk management. The ratings also reflect the strategic importance of the company to its parent, The People's Insurance Company (Group) of China Limited (PICC Group) (China). As the sole overseas insurance entity and a key component of PICC Group's overseas strategies, PICC HK receives implicit and explicit support from the parent, including business development, management personnel and financial support. The revision of the outlooks to positive from stable reflects continued improvement in PICC HK's business profile, as demonstrated by the enhanced market position and more diversified book of business. According to statistics published by its domestic regulator, PICC HK ranked 13th with a market share of 2.3% in terms of onshore and offshore combined gross premium written (GPW) in 2024. The company's GPW grew by 65% cumulatively from 2020 to 2024. The active expansion in inward reinsurance also has contributed to improved business diversification, which was concentrated moderately on a whole-account quote share (WAQS) sourced from its affiliated company, PICC Property and Casualty Company Limited (PICC P&C). The inward reinsurance business profile is diversified geographically with adequate profitability in the past four years. By leveraging the underwriting acumen and increasing synergies within the parent group, PICC HK expects the expanded business profile will be sustainable and profitable. PICC HK's risk-adjusted capitalisation, as measured by Best's Capital Adequacy Ratio (BCAR), remained at the strongest level at year-end 2024. The company's investment portfolio remains well-diversified, dominated by investment-grade bonds, cash and cash equivalents, and preference shares. Its investment strategy remains prudent, with limited exposure on unlisted funds and real-estate assets. Other supporting factors include a strong regulatory solvency position, as well as a strong liquidity position. PICC HK's operating performance remains adequate. It has maintained a mid-single digit return-on-equity ratio over the past two years. In 2024, the company's net profit was supported mainly by investment income consisting of mostly interest and dividend income. PICC HK also achieved positive underwriting results for 2024 as a result of the improved underwriting result of direct domestic business and a stable profit contribution from the WAQS. As the group's sole overseas insurance entity, PICC HK continues to be of strategic importance and plays a key role in the group's overseas strategies. There is a track record of multiple capital injections to PICC HK from PICC Group. In addition, the company continues to benefit from the group's resources and operational synergies, including business development, key management personnel, investment, information technology and overall risk management. Positive rating actions could occur if PICC HK's expanded business profile proves to be sustainable, while maintaining its underwriting profitability. Negative rating actions could occur if there is a decline in PICC HK's operating performance to a level that no longer supports AM Best's adequate operating performance assessment. Although unlikely, negative rating actions could occur if the support PICC HK receives from its parent weakens notably or the parent's credit fundamentals deteriorate materially. Ratings are communicated to rated entities prior to publication. Unless stated otherwise, the ratings were not amended subsequent to that communication. Browns rookie Quinshon Judkins won't report to training camp as he focuses on domestic-violence charge
: This article contains depictions of alleged domestic violence. Cleveland Browns rookie running back Quinshon Judkins won't report to training camp Friday with the rest of the team's draft picks. Judkins, who is unsigned, was told by the team to focus on his legal situation after being arrested on a domestic-violence charge Saturday, according to Mary Kay Cabot of Judkins was arrested Saturday after he allegedly punched a woman in the chin/lip area, arm and thigh after they got off a flight at the Fort Lauderdale International Airport. The woman reported the alleged assault five days later because she "felt bad due to the recent success and career of the defendant," per the police report. The woman reportedly still had bruising in the areas in which she claimed she was hit by Judkins. While Judkins' contract situation prevents him from reporting to the Browns, the team seemingly is in no rush to get a deal done. Following Judkins' arrest, the team reportedly told him to focus on his legal situation, a sign its in no rush to get a deal done at this time. A number of 2025 second-round draft picks entered Monday unsigned. But with training camps approaching, players started putting pen to paper. San Francisco 49ers rookie Alfred Collins, Chicago Bears lineman Ozzy Trapilo and Los Angeles Chargers wideout Tre Harris are among the second-round picks to come to terms with their teams in recent days. All those deals helped set the market, leading to a domino effect from the other second rounders from the 2025 NFL Draft. Judkins may have been involved in that deluge of signings if not for his arrest. Judkins, 21, was taken by the Browns with the No. 36 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. He was expected to play a major role in the team's offense after former standout Nick Chubb left in the offseason. In his final season with Ohio State, Judkins ran for 1,060 yards and scored 14 rushing touchdowns, making him one of the best running-back prospects in the draft. The arrest complicates Judkins' NFL future, as he could face a suspension from the league before playing in his first NFL game. The NFL will likely wait until more information is released regarding the arrest before doling out possible punishment to Judkins.

July preliminary consumer sentiment: What it means for the Fed
Preliminary consumer sentiment ticked up in July, beating expectations with a reading of 61.8, according to data from the University of Michigan. Brian Jacobsen, chief economist and strategist at Annex Wealth Management, explains how this shift in sentiment could influence the Federal Reserve. To watch more expert insights and analysis on the latest market action, check out more Market Catalysts here. Brian, we did just get some numbers on consumer confidence from the University of Michigan. This was the July preliminary numbers. So the the first look here at July and it came in a little stronger than economists had forecast and stronger than June. 61.8 was the reading here. Um so seeing and seeing the sort of expectations for inflation ticking a little bit lower than they had been, what do you make of of that consumer sentiment? We also, of course, had retail sales this week. So what's that picture looking like? Sure. So if you think about the June data for industrial production and retail sales, stronger than expected, but some of that was just a bounce back. Now, the sentiment data, I think is really important, especially the inflation expectations component, because I think that's one of the things that Chair Powell has been hanging his hat on in terms of justifying a pause, is that inflation expectations had been moving up, they're kind of high, and he wants to fight against that. And so if those are now drifting lower, uh really the argument for the Fed staying on pause kind of goes to the side and maybe they should get to more of a neutral stance instead of a restrictive stance. And it's understandable why sentiment would have improved because really, I think we've become a little numb to the tariff talk, realizing that this is going to play out. Maybe it's not going to be as bad as what it was originally presented back on April 2nd in the Rose Garden. If we settle somewhere between 10 and 15%, it's not great, but it could be worse. So Brian, as you look at all of these various elements, what do you think is the the biggest risk for the market right now? Yeah, well, I think that the biggest risk right now is the valuations. When we look at the fundamentals, think that those will be improving, but how much are you paying for those fundamentals? So, as we go through earning season, I expect that we're going to be seeing a lot of volatility in terms of the companies that are meeting expectations, probably fine, but the misses are probably going to get punished a lot more than usual. I don't think investors have the patience to really deal with companies that are missing with any of those estimates. Um, really interesting. Good to watch if companies are are missing and what happens then. Brian, good to see you. Thanks so much. Thank you.
