Nestlé Is Making a Big Change to Its Products
The FDA declared a deadline for companies to remove Red Dye No. 3 from all products by 2027 to 2028. Since the ruling, all eyes have been on the other six FD&C colors the FDA have deemed safe for food use.
In April, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) shared new steps the FDA was taking to remove all petroleum-based synthetic food dyes from all products in the U.S., including the remaining FD&C colors.
While not mandatory, the FDA is 'requesting' companies remove Red Dye No. 3 from all products before the deadline, as well as 'working with the industry' to ban FD&C Green No. 3, FD&C Red No. 40, FD&C Yellow No. 5, FD&C Yellow No. 6, FD&C Blue No. 1, and FD&C Blue No. 2 by the end of 2026. Some companies have been proactive in removing the dyes—like Sam's Club, Kraft Heinz, and General Mills. Now, Nestlé is the latest company to announce its plans to remove all FD&C colors from its products.
On June 25, Nestlé released a statement declaring plans to 'fully eliminate FD&C colors in its U.S. food and beverage portfolio by mid-2026.' The company stated that it has been working to remove synthetic dyes and 'identify alternative solutions' for over a decade, which has resulted in more than 90% of its products being free of FD&C color additives. Nestlé says it should be 100% synthetic dye-free within the next 12 months.
'As [customers'] diverse dietary preferences and nutritional needs evolve, we evolve with them,' said Marty Thompson, Nestlé USA's CEO, in a press release.
Nestlé didn't provide a list of the products that will be changing, but some of its products that still contain synthetic food dyes include select Nesquik milks and some Nestlé Toll House cookie doughs. Nestlé will replace the synthetic FD&C colors with naturally-derived colorants like turmeric, vegetable juice, and annatto extract—similar to what Aldi and Trader Joe's have been using for years.
Thompson added that "Nestlé USA remains committed to providing consumers with affordable, high-quality food and beverages.'

New U.S. Army Shaving Rule Could Affect Many Black Soldiers
Soldiers with skin conditions will no longer be granted permanent medical waivers that allow them to avoid shaving under an updated U.S. Army policy that critics said could disproportionately affect Black troops. The change will phase out permanent waivers for soldiers who had been allowed to grow beards because they had been diagnosed with pseudofolliculitis barbae, also known as razor bumps or ingrown hairs. The condition affects up to 60 percent of Black men as well as other people with curly hair, according to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology. The Army will still grant temporary medical waivers and permanent waivers for religious reasons that allow soldiers to grow beards. Soldiers with permanent medical waivers will work with their doctors and commanders to develop better grooming techniques and treatment plans that will allow them to shave without developing skin problems, the Army said. Soldiers who cannot comply with grooming standards that require them to be clean-shaven 'within a reasonable time' may be kicked out of the Army, the service said in a statement this week. The updated Army policy is similar to one the U.S. Marines announced in March. 'This update reinforces our culture that fosters discipline — and discipline equals readiness,' Michael R. Weimer, the sergeant major of the Army, said in the statement. 'Through a phased implementation, we are working with providers through commanders to effectively address grooming standards to ensure we maintain a professional force.' Want all of The Times? Semler Scientific Gets Buy Rating From Benchmark, $101 Price Target on Bitcoin Treasury Pivot
Benchmark's Mark Palmer initiated coverage of Semler Scientific (SMLR) with a buy rating and a $101 price target, citing the company's dramatic pivot from medical diagnostics to bitcoin (BTC) accumulation as a key value driver. Semler, which spent over 15 years focused on chronic disease detection, adopted bitcoin as its primary treasury reserve asset in May last year. The move made it only the second U.S.-listed firm, after Michael Saylor's Strategy (MSTR), to adopt bitcoin as a treasury reserve asset. Since then, the company has acquired roughly 4,636 BTC for $430 million, with an average cost basis of $92,753 per bitcoin, the report said. Palmer noted that the stock rallied 178% in the six and a half months following its Bitcoin Standard announcement, peaking at $81.56 in December 2024. However, the analyst argued that Semler still trades at a steep discount compared to bitcoin treasury peers. Its multiple of net asset value (mNAV) sits at 1.25, compared to 4.29 for Japan-based Metaplanet (3350) and 6.45 for France's Blockchain Group (ALTBG), the analyst noted. Benchmark believes this gap could close. Management recently appointed Joe Burnett as Director of Bitcoin Strategy and outlined bold BTC accumulation targets: 10,000 BTC by end of 2025, 42,000 by end of 2026, and 105,000 by end of 2027. The report notes that resolving legal and regulatory headwinds from Semler's legacy healthcare business, including a Department of Justice (DOJ) investigation and Medicare reimbursement uncertainties, could help lift its valuation further. Benchmark's $101 price target is based on a sum-of-the-parts valuation that assumes bitcoin will hit $225,000 by year-end 2026.
