Baylor AD Mack Rhoades to lead CFP selection committee
Other new members of the 13-person committee will be former Michigan State and Cincinnati coach Mark Dantonio, Maryland AD Damon Evans, Middle Tennessee State AD Chris Massaro, former Mississippi tight end Wesley Walls and sports writers Ivan Maisel and Steve Wieberg.
The committee is in charge of ranking the teams to set them into the 12-team postseason bracket that debuted last season. Still undetermined is whether there will be changes to the system in 2025.
The commissioners from the SEC and Big Ten are in favor of reworking the system so that conference winners aren't automatically awarded first-round byes. But any changes for the upcoming season would require a unanimous vote of the 11 conference commissioners and Notre Dame AD who run the playoff.

That was considered to be the case even before the first iteration of the US LBM Coaches Poll was released on Monday morning. In the coaches' poll, the Ducks landed at No. TK in the nation, standing as the No. 3 Big Ten team in the rankings. Here's a look at the top 25: A year ago, Oregon spent a majority of the season at No. 1 in the coaches' poll rankings, finishing the regular season with a 13-0 record. They won the Big Ten Conference Championship in their first year as conference members before earning the No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff. This year, Oregon still faces high expectations, although several questions have arisen surrounding its new-look roster. The Ducks return just four total starters from last year's team: one on offense and three on defense. They will have a new quarterback under center and a ton of young faces who need to step up and prove themselves. Despite the inexperience among players, Oregon's coaching staff remains largely intact, with Lanning bringing back both offensive coordinator Will Stein and defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi, as well as many of the position coaches. There are expectations that the Ducks will once again compete for a Big Ten title and likely secure a spot in the College Football Playoff when all is said and done in 2025. Preseason college football Coaches Poll: Biggest snubs and surprises
We're almost set for the start of another season of college football, and that means it's time for some preseason rankings. On Monday, the 2025-26 preseason USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll was released based on the ballots of participating coaches from around the country, and to the surprise of no one, the Texas Longhorns claimed the No. 1 spot in the rankings ahead of the first campaign of the Arch Manning era. While Texas claiming the top spot wasn't much of a shock, some choices on the coaches' ballot defied expectation. Here are the five biggest surprises and snubs from the initial release of the 2025 Coaches Poll on Monday. 1. Ohio State at No. 2 The Buckeyes are all set for their national title defense in 2025, and while they should once again contend for a College Football Playoff bid, it's a bit surprising to see them this high with how much they lost on both sides of the ball after last season, including starting quarterback Will Howard. Still, Jeremiah Smith and Caleb Downs remain, so this isn't completely out of left field. 2. Clemson snubbed from the top 5 This one is tough for me to fathom. If I were filling out a preseason ballot, I'm not sure the Tigers would be outside of my top three. Cade Klubnik is back as a preseason Heisman favorite, Clemson has its best receiving corps in years and the defense has bona fide stars like Peter Woods and TJ Parker. Instead, the Tigers rank No. 6 here. 3. Florida cracks the top 20 The Gators certainly enter 2025 with momentum after ending the year with four straight wins under star true freshman quarterback DJ Lagway, but Florida is the only team in the preseason top 20 that took five or more losses last season. Still, there's quite a bit of offseason hype, and it wouldn't be a major surprise to see the team inside the top 15 of the AP Top 25. 4. BYU ranked amid QB uncertainty The Cougars won 11 games as one of the most surprising teams in the Big 12 last season, and while they should be competitive again, the offseason saw the late departure of quarterback Jake Retzlaff to Tulane. Without Retzlaff, BYU has an uncertain quarterback situation featuring transfers McCae Hillstead and Treyson Bourget, along with true freshman Bear Bachmeier. 5. Where is Iowa? While the Hawkeyes have become a bit of a running joke for their dismal offenses under Kirk Ferentz, this year's squad is actually intriguing. The addition of accomplished South Dakota State quarterback Mark Gronowski could raise the ceiling quite a bit for Iowa's offense, and this team is coming off a 10-win season. Iowa doesn't play a flashy brand of football, but I would be pretty surprised if the Hawkeyes don't finish the season inside the top 25.

Penn State receives highest preseason US LBM Coaches Poll ranking since 1999
A season of raised expectations saw the bar officially raised one more time this summer for the Penn State Nittany Lions. The preseason US LBM Coaches Poll was released on Monday, and Penn State is set to start the season ranked No. 3 in the nation. Penn State received 14 first-place votes in the preseason poll. Texas takes the top spot in the preseason coaches poll with 28 first-place votes. Defending national champion Ohio State received 20 first-place votes and is ranked second in the preseason poll. Other Big Ten teams ranked in the preseason coaches poll include Oregon (no. 7), Illinois (no. 12), Michigan (no. 14), and Indiana (no. 19). Penn State returns a loaded roster this season from a team that made a run to an appearance in the Big Ten championship game and the semifinal of the College Football Playoff. Penn State was one drive away from playing for the national championship, which means the program is looking to take care of some unfinished business in 2025. This is Penn State's highest preseason ranking in the coaches poll since starting off the 1999 season ranked no. 4 . Penn State dominated preseason no. 3 Arizona at home in the Pigskin Classic to back up that preseason ranking right out of the gates. Penn State started the 1997 season ranked no. 2 in the coaches poll behind Florida. The Nittany Lions started off no. 1 in the preseason AP Top 25 that same season. Penn State ended that 1997 season with a final record of 9-3 after seeing things fall apart quickly with a shocking loss at home to Minnesota. Penn State returns starting quarterback Drew Allar and arguably the best running back duo in the nation with Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen. Those three will play behind one of the best offensive lines James Franklin has had to work with, and the team adds key transfer additions with Trebor Pena, Kyron Hudson, and DeVonte Ross to address a need at wide receiver. The defense is highlighted by the offseason hire of defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, who is excited to work with defensive linemen like Zane Durant and Dani Dennis-Sutton. Penn State's secondary will be in stable hands with A.J. Harris and Zakee Wheatley looking to make big plays and create turnovers. The rise of Tony Rojas at linebacker will also keep Penn State's defense among the best in the Big Ten and the nation.
