But the project faced a series of setbacks due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The major revamp of the building, which first opened its doors in 1878, was planned due to it falling into disrepair.
Bosses said it was no longer fit for purpose and wanted to regenerate it for the 21st century, while keeping its unique Victoria charm.
The theatre will boast a new foyer, improved accessibility, a new 150-seater multi-purpose studio theatre.

There will also be a new bar area and social spaces, with enhanced backstage facilities for performers.
And on August 23, a community-led parade will officially mark the reopening of the theatre after seven years, The Glasgow Times reports.
Everyone is invited to a weekend of free creative workshops, events and behind-the-scenes tours on August 23 and 24.
Bookable events such as workshops, introductory tours and creative session will be available from August 28 to September 5.

The first production will be Small Acts of Love from September 12 - a major new work about the bonds formed between families on both sides of the Atlantic in the wake of the Pan Am 103 atrocity in Lockerbie.
And in October, the brand new 150-seat Studio Theatre is opened with two productions by the theatre's Participate groups.
Oscar-nominated Toni Collette spotted dancing in Glasgow theatre as fans hail 'legend'
In addition, the theatre's longstanding commitment to its Gorbals neighbours will continue through a new Gorbals Pass giving access to tickets for just £5 for locals with a G5 postcode.
The theatre's Participate director Catrin Evans said: "This homecoming is inspired by our fantastic new building that we know so many people are keen to get inside - but it's also about so much more.

"It's about reconnecting with our neighbours, welcoming new voices and celebrating creativity itself as a form of community-building.
"We're offering a range of activities so that everyone and anyone can step into the Citizens Theatre, try something new, take themselves on a journey and feel that this space belongs to them.
"Whether it's your first time through the doors or you've been part of the Citz story for years, we can't wait to welcome you home."

We previously told how there will be a number of road closures around the venue as it prepares to reopen to the public.
As the historic venue gets ready to welcome back audiences, Glasgow City Council has announced several streets will be shut.
The road closures will take place between August 22 and 23.
Gorbals Street will be shut between Ballater Street and Cumberland Street from 3pm on August 22 until 3.30pm on August 23.

During these hours waiting, loading and unloading will be prohibited.
On August 23, traffic will not be allowed to flow along Gorbals Street between Ballater Street and Cumberland Street from 9am until 3.30pm.
Cleland Street and Cleland Lane will also be closed to vehicles during these hours.

Air Ambulance crews rushed to the family mansion to save the singer - who was suffering from Parkinson's disease - in his final moments. A statement signed by his family said: "He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time." But online trolls are now peddling "disgusting" rumours that the Brummie icon decided to take his own life. Advertisement The topic was even discussed on US radio stations, including Sirius XM, where the rock icon had his own channel. Sharon, Kelly and Jack are 'sickened' by the false narratives, which claim that they were involved in his decision end his own life. A family friend said last night: 'The family are still grieving and to deal with this bull*** is vile. "It has deeply sickened Sharon and the children. Ozzy passed away at home and the paramedics tried to save him - fact. Advertisement 'It is simply disgusting, because these social media idiots are not credible, but somehow their narrative is spreading every day. "Even though they have no knowledge, other online users treat this fake news as fact. The raft of trolls and rumours has spiralled in recent days. 'It is quite sick that people would think that Ozzy would do such a thing. Advertisement "Vile comments have come in to the family's feeds accusing them of being involved in some kind of conspiracy. It has horrified them all.' The false allegations have been shared tens of thousands of times, appearing on news websites and across various social media platforms. AI videos seemed to show Ozzy making secret lengthy confessions about ending his life on his own terms after his farewell concert. The insider added: 'Ozzy had been in great spirits following his farewell show, but he also had lots to look forward to in the upcoming months. Advertisement 'There's no way he would've taken his life, because no matter how tough his physical and medical conditions were, being with his family and especially his grandchildren provided him with immense joy and huge highs. 'Not only was he working on a TV project about his astonishing farewell show, but he was lined up to film his reality series called Home to Roost for the BBC. 'He was looking forward also to promoting his memoir in September. 'Sharon has really taken Ozzy's passing so, so hard. They were such a strong force together. More on Ozzy Osbourne... 'Ozzy could not have been more emotionally moved by what happened at Villa Park. With the way fans reacted and how the biggest names in rock music came to support him. 'That high really made Sharon so happy. Not only because she had played such a key role in making it happen, but also because it had bolstered Ozzy's spirits and day-to-day they lived for each other. Advertisement "It can't be underestimated how much Sharon supported Ozzy as he dealt with dark moments, knowing that his mobility was suffering and the pain he was going through. "I mean, it was really a powerful partnership. And now Sharon is devastated that his journey's coming to an end.' Last week, Ozzy's daughter Kelly, 40, paid an emotional tribute to her father, who died just days after watching her get engaged. She shared the poignant lyrics to Black Sabbath's 'Changes' - a hit she and her dad released their own version of together in 2003. Advertisement The track soared to number one in the UK charts at the time, with the duo known for their close bond over the years. In a poignant nod to the song, Kelly wrote on Instagram: "I feel unhappy I am so sad. She shared a video of the moment Sid popped the question backstage at her father's final ever Black Sabbath gig on July 5. Ozzy's death came just 17 days after his farewell performance at the Villa Park stadium in Birmingham. Advertisement The concert raised £140million for charities including Birmingham's Acorns Children's Hospice, Birmingham Children's Hospital, and Cure Parkinson's. Tributes have since piled in from stars including Sir Rod Stewart, Noel Gallagher and Sir Elton John. Shortly prior to his passing, the Changes hitmaker told of his strict health monitoring and medical check-ins. On his Sirius XM show in May, Ozzy said: "I am constantly in training seven days a week. Advertisement "I have got this guy who's virtually living with me and I am in bed by seven. "I used to have to take a handful of f***ing sleeping pills. "Now I don't take anything. I am having my blood pressure taken 15 times a day. "I've got this f***ing device on my finger. It's a monitor to say how my heart rate is.' Advertisement He then said of his life approach: "I'm just taking it one day at a time. "Ask him upstairs. In my case, the one below." This month's gig was touted as "the greatest heavy metal show ever," with Ozzy grinning to chanting fans as he thanked them for all they had done for him. Ozzy became known as the "Prince of Darkness" in his six-decade career thanks to his on-stage antics that attracted a legion of heavy rock fans. I created Scottish football's most iconic TV show – but the life was sucked out of it before we had to scrap it
The show's creator hasn't held back in his criticism of the BBC 'YOU CAN'T DO THAT' 'YOU CAN'T DO THAT' I created Scottish football's most iconic TV show – but the life was sucked out of it before we had to scrap it "WHERE'S the burds?". "Mibbies aye, mibbies naw..." Just some of the few iconic lines from Scottish football's most famous TV show. Advertisement 4 Only An Excuse was a favourite fixture on TV screens each Hogmanay Credit: BBC 4 Philip Differ created the show with Jonathan Watson doing the acting 4 Watson's Frank McAvennie character became an icon Credit: BBC 4 But BBC bosses 'sucked the good out' of the show Credit: Getty Only An Excuse was a regular on our screens for much of the last three decades before its final episode aired in 2020. After debuting on radio in 1897, the programme became a telly favourite after airing on Hogmany in 1993. It would become something of a Scottish tradition to help welcome in the New Year, with its appeal going beyond just the ordinary football fan. The sketch show turned some of Scottish football's interesting characters figures into genuine household names - with Jonathan Watson's impersonations leaving punters in stitches. Advertisement His parodies of the likes of Sir Kenny Dalglish, Frank McAvennie, Chick Young and Sir Alex Ferguson are entrenched in the public memory. But as time went on, Watson and show creator Philip Differ felt the format had lost its magic. Not because either of them had ran out of jokes though. Indeed, far from it. Instead it was meddling TV bosses that RUINED the show. Advertisement That's how Differ feels five years on from the last episode. He has opened up on the decision to call time on the programme after growing increasingly frustrated with the input from BBC chiefs forcing them to tone things down or take certain jokes out altogether. So much so that for the last few episodes of Only An Excuse, Differ wouldn't even have aired them if it was up to him. Rodgers' message to Celtic board, striker woes & huge Champions League risk Speaking on the the Let Me Be Frank podcast, Differ said: "It wasn't enjoyable towards the end. Advertisement "Everything had to be vetted and given the go ahead by the BBC. "And if it was a wee bit edgy, you'd be told 'No you can't do that'. "I'll be honest, the last three or four Only an Excuses, it wasn't the show I wanted to put out." Differ then described the process by which the show would be made and how the interventions of the broadcast bigwigs led to a diluting of their comedy. Advertisement He said the show's creative team would go from finding the script hilarious to watching the final cut and feeling dejected. "We'd have a read-through, with Jonny and I and Rab Christie the producer at the Comedy Unit, and Noddie Davidson the director," Differ said. "The four of us would have a great time, we'd p*** ourselves laughing reading it, and at Jonny doing the voices, we'd sometimes get another actor in to help out and we'd come out feeling full of it. "But when it came to filming, all the good had been sucked out of it. Advertisement "'You can't do this, you can't do that, I don't think people will find that funny'. "Or, 'Do you know what would be good...?' and they'd suggest something that you had to keep in. "The year we decided we'd had enough, I spoke to Jonny and I told him there's no joy in it. And he was the same. "The characters weren't coming through either." Advertisement Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

So far he's proved himself to be quite the troublemaker; trying to scam Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt), flirting with just about every man or woman he's crossed, and causing undue stress for his sister Lauren (Jacqueline Jossa) and her fiancé Peter Beale (Thomas Law). After discovering that his nephew Jimmy is visually impaired, fans saw a softer side to Oscar, who later volunteered to babysit his two nephews. Disaster struck when Mike let himself into the house, leaving a large kitchen knife jammed in the chopping board as a warning of what he was capable of. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video In today's episode, Lauren found out about the altercation. Louie, who had spotted Mike chatting with Oscar, asked if he was going to return again soon. A troubled Oscar was then forced to explain what had happened, and promised his sister that her sons weren't in danger. Later, after heading to the market for a shift, he spotted Mike and his mate Harrison lurking in the shadows. Knowing that it was high time this stopped, he pulled the lads to one side and tried to find a solution. Harrison swooped in from behind and punched him in the stomach, with Mike lifting a brick over Oscar's head. Luckily, Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) rushed to his defence, but the violence didn't end there. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Who's leaving Coronation Street?
