Boston's Lucas Giolito Beats Nationals In His Return To Washington

Boston Red Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito made a memorable return to Washington on Friday and continued a monthlong surge in the process. The right-hander threw 7 2/3 innings in his first career outing against the team that drafted him, allowing one run in Boston's 11–2 victory over the Washington Nationals.
Giolito gave up four hits while striking out seven to earn his first victory at Nationals Park–an experience that was tinged with little sentimentality. 'Not really,' Giolito said. 'It's so long ago. Nine, 10 years ago I debuted here. I was definitely excited to come back because it's been so long… I'm not facing any of the same guys. It's a different team now.'
Giolito, Washington's first-round pick in 2012, reached the majors in 2016 and posted a 6.75 ERA in six appearances that season. But he hadn't faced the Nationals since they dealt him to the Chicago White Sox the following December as part of a package of prospects for outfielder Adam Eaton, who helped Washington win the World Series in 2019. 'I pitched very different back then–very long arm action,' Giolito said. 'I think every baseball player's career you have your ups and downs, you have your trials and tribulations, highs and lows, however you want to put it. It's been a long road. I look forward to many more, even the downs. When you come back from those it's probably more satisfying than being good all the time.'
Giolito went on to pitch seven seasons with the White Sox, with stops with the Los Angeles Angels and Cleveland late in the 2023 season before missing all of last year after elbow surgery. A hamstring strain kept the 30-year-old out until April 30 this season, and he surrendered at least six runs in three of his first seven starts. But in five outings since June 10, he is 4–0 with an 0.83 ERA. In that span, he has lowered his ERA from 6.42 to 3.66. He was sharp against the Nationals, scattering four hits and three walks while throwing a season-high 108 pitches in his longest outing since August 9, 2021. 'He didn't want to come out,' manager Alex Cora said. 'I appreciate that. He's a competitor. He feels like the more pitches he throws, the better it is for him.'

Wimbledon: Ben Shelton Pleaded for Extra Time Off for His Sister at Morgan Stanley. It Worked

Ben Shelton launched a public plea for his sister to get some extra time off from her job at investment bank Morgan Stanley so she could remain at Wimbledon to cheer for him. It worked. After advancing to face Italy's Lorenzo Sonego on Monday in the fourth round, Shelton spoke in an on-court interview in front of a crowd that included his sister, Emma, and his girlfriend, US national soccer team star Trinity Rodman. 'I've been playing well this week. It's not just been me here. I have a great team. My parents are here. My girlfriend's here. Also, my sister's here. She's been here for every match that I've played this tournament so far. She's been the lucky charm,' said the 10th-seeded Shelton, a 22-year-old American who has appeared in two Grand Slam semifinals. 'But she has work back in the US starting on Monday. She works for Morgan Stanley.' That drew some boos from spectators as Emma covered her face with her hands. 'If any of you all have some (connections) and get her a couple extra days off so she can (stay and) we can keep this rolling,' Shelton continued after his 6–3, 7–6 (4), 6–2 victory over Marton Fucsovics of Hungary on Saturday, 'that'd be great.' Sure enough, hours later, Emma posted a short video on Instagram in which Ben is heard asking her, 'You got the week off or what?' She jumps up and down with her arms raised and a wide smile, and Ben says, 'Shoutout Morgan Stanley.' The caption reads 'thank you MS' with three blue heart emojis and 'return flight: cancelled.' Ben Shelton, who won all nine sets he played in Week 1 at the All England Club, beat Sonego in the Australian Open quarterfinals in January.

Willy Adames had three hits and four RBIs to back a strong start by Logan Webb, and the San Francisco Giants beat the Athletics 7–2 on Saturday night. Webb (8–6) gave up two runs and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings to move to 4–0 in five career starts against the Athletics. Randy Rodríguez got the final out in the seventh, and Tyler Rogers and Spencer Bivens each pitched a scoreless inning to close it out as the Giants won for the third time in four games. Luis Severino (2–10) walked Mike Yastrzemski to begin the game, then hit Heliot Ramos with a pitch. One out later, he hit Matt Chapman to load the bases before Yastrzemski was forced out at home on Jung Hoo Lee's grounder. Adames singled up the middle for a 2–0 lead. Nick Kurtz led off the second against Webb with a double, moved to third on Shea Langeliers' infield hit, and scored on Tyler Soderstrom's double-play grounder to get the Athletics on the scoreboard. Chapman and Lee had two-out singles in the third, and Adames had a two-run single to make it 4–1. Ramos hit his 14th home run – a 416-foot leadoff shot to center field in the fifth – for a 5–1 lead, and Brett Wisely added a two-run double in the sixth. Kurtz added an RBI double in the sixth for the Athletics' final run. Severino allowed five runs and five hits in 4 1/3 innings and is still looking for his first win at home in his first season with the Athletics. He has given up 19 earned runs in his last four starts covering 18 innings. Key moment: Both of Adames' two-run singles came with two outs.

Kyle Higashioka was 3 for 3 with a home run and five RBIs from the ninth spot in the order in the Texas Rangers' 7–4 victory over the San Diego Padres on Saturday night. Patrick Corbin (5–7) allowed two runs on six hits in six innings to help Texas even the series. Shawn Armstrong came in and retired Xander Bogaerts on a force at third for his third save. Josh Smith hit the first pitch from Stephen Kolek (3–4), who allowed six runs on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings, to right field for his eighth homer and a 1–0 lead. Jose Iglesias drew a one-out walk off Corbin in the second, and Jake Cronenworth, who singled in the winning run in the 10th inning of a 3–2 win Friday, hit his eighth home run to put the Padres up 2–1. Jake Burger was hit by a pitch leading off the third, and Higashioka followed with his second homer to put the Rangers ahead 3–2. Wyatt Langford walked with two outs in the fourth and scored on Jonah Heim's double. Burger and Higashioka had two straight singles for a 5–2 advantage. Langford singled leading off the sixth, took third on Burger's single, and scored on Higashioka's sacrifice fly to make it 6–2. Luke Jackson replaced Corbin to begin the seventh and loaded the bases with nobody out. Jackson Merrill and Manny Machado followed with sacrifice flies to get the Padres to 6–4. Texas answered in the eighth with Higashioka's third hit–a two-out, run-scoring single for the final run. Machado went 1 for 4, leaving him two hits away from 2,000. Key moment: Higashioka's two-run homer in the third gave Texas the lead for good. Key stat: San Diego has won 14 of 15 games against Texas since 2020. Up next: The Padres haven't announced who will start opposite Rangers RHP Jack Leiter (4–5, 4.29) on Sunday in the series finale.
