Kolkata: Commuters on Monday preferred the underground route as transport above the ground went missing since morning, forcing many office-goers to take unsanctioned leave. The Metro was a saviour when buses, mostly hired for rallyists, were unavailable and app-cab services were erratic.
Till 3 pm, the Blue Line, which is the city's transportation lifeline operating along the North-South axis, recorded a sharp spike with 386,033 commuters. Green Line 2, or East-West Metro's Esplanade-Howrah Maidan section, ferried 39,528 people till 3 pm. Howrah was the Green Line's most crowded station, earning Rs 3.1 lakh (cash) till 5.30 pm. "Compiling revenue generated from other means like smart card, UPI, and the Metro app, Howrah station earned around Rs 5 lakh till 5.30 pm," an official said.
The passenger count for Green Line 1, or East-West Metro's Sector V-Sealdah section, was 29,501 till 3 pm. The less-used metro lines were more crowded than usual. Till 3 pm, the Orange (New Garia-Ruby) and Purple (Joka-Majerhat) lines recorded 3,276 and 3,430 passengers, respectively.

Manual passage replaced automatic fare collection (AFC) gates. Separate accesses were opened for smart card users for faster movement. As passengers were trying to squeeze in, a few trains were briefly held up at Esplanade and Chandni Chowk stations because the compartment doors could not be closed.
RPF personnel were seen rushing in to help commuters board the trains. Escalators were turned off to prevent accidents.
"It was like a local train journey. The compartments were packed with rally participants. I had to get down at Esplanade but could not. I went to Park Street instead and walked back," said Pritam Saha, a Lake Town resident who boarded a train at Belgachhia.
Above the ground, the dearth of buses or any other means of commute gave daily travellers a harrowing time. "I waited for 20 minutes for a bus to Park Street, then decided to take the metro from Thakurpukur station to Majerhat where I waited for another 30 minutes for a bus.
Joined three others around 10 am for a shared cab ride to Park Street that cost us Rs 600," rued Goutam Maji, a private firm employee. App cabs were cancelling at random.
"At 8.30 am, at least four cab drivers cancelled rides to Esplanade," said Tanima Mondal, who was forced to opt for an app bike for twice the normal fare. Very few auto rickshaws were seen in the morning.
Buses from both the northern fringes (Barasat, Rajarhat, New Town) and the south (Behala, Budge Budge, Amtala, Sonarpur, and Baruipur) weren't available since Sunday evening. According to Titu Saha of the City Suburban Bus Service and Tapan Banerjee of the Joint Council of Bus Syndicate, it was the highest rally requisition in recent years.

Adani Group's Airport Business Expansion: The Adani Group is aggressively expanding its airport business, with plans to invest nearly Rs 1 lakh crore over the next five years. The group, led by billionaire Gautam Adani, operates seven airports in India, including the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai. The Navi Mumbai International Airport is expected to be added to this list by October this year. Investment Strategy For Next Five Years Jeet Adani, 27-year-old son of Gautam Adani and head of the group's airport business, told the Times of India that the company has laid out a five-year plan involving investments of Rs 95,000–96,000 crore across airport infrastructure and real estate development. 'The majority of this investment will go into the Navi Mumbai and Mumbai airports, as well as real estate developments in both locations,' Jeet Adani said. Adani Group New Terminals Plan Adani Group also has plans to build new terminals over the next four years in cities like Ahmedabad, Jaipur, and Thiruvananthapuram, while the recently built terminal in Lucknow will be expanded. A new terminal in Guwahati is already ready and expected to become operational by October–November this year. Jeet Adani clarified that the group has no plans to expand abroad for now. 'We see tremendous opportunities within India and don't want to dilute our focus. At the end of the day, it's about our management bandwidth and where we want to deploy capital. India is poised for significant growth over the next 10–15 years,' he said. He also noted that 26 airports in India have already been identified for development under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Investment In Navi Mumbai Airport Adani Group has merged Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) project. Instead of launching with a 1 crore passenger annual capacity (CPA), it will now begin operations with a 2 crore CPA. The airport is being developed with an investment of Rs 19,000 crore, and work on Terminal 2 has already begun.

VDA to build ramp for Divyang & elderly at Ravidas ghat in Kashi
Varanasi: The Varanasi Development Authority is set to install a ramp at Ravidas ghat, making it easier for elderly and Divyang individuals (people with disabilities) to board cruise rides on the Ganga river. Currently, the steep steps pose a significant challenge for these individuals, often forcing them to abandon their plans for a cruise ride. With the new ramp, accessibility and comfort will be greatly improved. VDA vice-chairman Pulkit Garg said, "We have finalised a proposal to construct a ramp at Ravidas ghat to facilitate people with disabilities and the elderly. Necessary approval has been obtained from the infrastructure fund for this project, which is estimated to cost around Rs 50 lakh. The work will be carried out by inviting e-tenders as per regulations." The new ramp will soon enable people with disabilities and the elderly to comfortably board cruise rides on the Ganga river, allowing them to participate in sightseeing, Ganga aarti viewing, and other religious activities. The ramp will provide direct access from the ghat to the boats, bridging a substantial height difference between the entrance point at Ravidas Park and the lowest step. This development is particularly noteworthy as Varanasi is set to launch a 50-seat air-conditioned electric boat for tourists at Ravidas ghat, enhancing the city's religious tourism infrastructure. The proposed ramp is being designed according to accessibility standards for people with disabilities, with a slope ratio of 1:12. Approximately 150 metres long, the ramp will be smooth, safe, and durable.

IHCL, Ambuja Neotia Group ink pact for 15 new hotels, focus on east, northeast region
NEW DELHI: Tata Group hospitality firm Indian Hotels Company ( IHCL ) and Ambuja Neotia Group on Monday announced an agreement for 15 new hotels, mostly in the east and northeast India, with the latter to invest up to Rs 2,000 crore. The 15 new sites identified to be developed are a combination of greenfield, brownfield and conversion projects and spread across West Bengal , Sikkim and Himachal Pradesh . These include a Taj resort in Sunderban, Darjeeling, Shimla and Rabong, SeleQtions hotels in Kolkata and Siliguri and a Tree of Life in Lataguri. A few select projects will also include Taj-branded villas in Darjeeling, Sikkim, Lataguri and Raichak. "Under this capital light arrangement, the total number of hotels (through the partnership with the Ambuja Neotia Group) will go from 28 to 43. What we estimate is 1,000-plus rooms will be added (by the new hotels) to an existing 1,500 rooms," IHCL Managing Director and CEO Puneet Chhatwal told PTI. IHCL has been a pioneer in building destinations like Rajasthan, Kerala, Goa and Andaman and Lakshadweep Islands, and it will now extend it to unlocking the tourism potential of the east and northeast with this agreement, he added. "It is also in line with India's ambition of developing the northeast," Chhatwal noted. With the expansion of the existing partnership, Chhatwal said Ambuja Neotia Group will become IHCL's "largest partners in all references -- rooms, hotels, revenue for us on that capital light arrangement". Ambuja Neotia Group is known for their luxury hospitality developments, showcasing the spirit of this region, he added. When asked about the investments, Ambuja Neotia Group Chairman Harshavardhan Neotia said, "I would think the investment would be in the region of around Rs 1,500 crore to Rs 2,000 crore". On the timeline for the new hotels to come up, Neotia said, "Realistically speaking, between five to six years is what we are hoping that most of this will get realised, unless something gets stuck because of some regulatory reasons". He further said, "All the lands on which we have signed properties are with us. Many of them are in various stages of regulatory approval. In a few cases, we are yet to start that process". Chhatwal said, "At least half of them would be less than five years". Neotia said the announcement follows closely on the heels of IHCL's strategic partnership with the Ambuja Neotia Group for Tree of Life, reflective of the strength and success of their ongoing collaboration. He further said, "Northeast, the unexplored region of India, has tremendous potential for bespoke luxury travel. The addition of premium room inventory this fiscal to Taj Chia Kutir in Kurseong as well as the upcoming Taj-branded luxury villas in Darjeeling, Lataguri and Gangtok reflects the growing demand from the segment".
