(Reuters) -Kalle Rovanpera fired up his challenge for a third world rally championship with a dominant win in the Canary Islands on Sunday.
The Finn led a Toyota sweep of the top four places, beating teammate and eight times world champion Sebastien Ogier by 53.5 seconds with championship leader Elfyn Evans completing the podium in third.
Japan's Takamoto Katsuta finished a distant fourth.
The win on the asphalt roads of Gran Canaria was Rovanpera's first since Chile seven months ago and lifted the double world champion from sixth to second overall after four rounds, 43 points behind Evans who has been in the top three in every rally.
Rovanpera won 15 of the 18 stages, including the first 12 in a row, and took a maximum 35 points from the Spanish rally, making its debut on the world championship stage.
"It has not been the best start of the season but... at least in these kinds of conditions we are back now," said the Finn.
Toyota extended their lead over Hyundai to 51 points in the manufacturers' standings.
Hyundai had Adrien Fourmaux finish fifth, two and a half minutes off the lead, with Ott Tanak and reigning world champion Thierry Neuville sixth and seventh.
Neuville dropped to third overall with Tanak fifth and Ogier sandwiched between the two.

Soccer-Real edge Juventus to reach last eight as Mbappe starts Club World Cup
Soccer Football - FIFA Club World Cup - Round of 16 - Real Madrid v Juventus - Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens, Florida, U.S. - July 1, 2025 Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappe in action with Juventus' Alberto Costa REUTERS/Marco Bello MIAMI (Reuters) -Real Madrid hit their stride at the Club World Cup on Tuesday, edging Juventus 1-0 to reach the quarter-finals thanks to a second-half strike from academy graduate Gonzalo Garcia as Kylian Mbappe made his tournament debut. Garcia, deputising for Mbappe after the France forward missed the group stage due to gastroenteritis, found the back of the net early in the second half to set up a meeting with either Borussia Dortmund or Monterrey. Mbappe made his much-anticipated appearance as a second-half substitute, delighting the partisan crowd who packed Hard Rock Stadium to near capacity in a demonstration of the Spanish giants' considerable global appeal. Juventus had early chances but gradually faded under the relentless pressing of Xabi Alonso's side and had goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio to thank for sparing them a heavier defeat. Barcelona's Ansu Fati aims to kick-start career in Monaco
BARCELONA have loaned Spanish forward Ansu Fati to Monaco for a season with an option to buy, the Ligue 1 club confirmed on Tuesday. Fati becomes Monaco's third summer signing, following England international defender Eric Dier and 2018 French World Cup winner Paul Pogba, both of whom arrived on free transfers. The three players will be officially presented to the press on Thursday. The 22-year-old Fati completed his medical with Barcelona agreeing a season-long loan with option to buy for 11 million euros ($13 million). According to a source close to the clubs, Barcelona will cover a significant portion of Fati's salary. However, the Spanish club will receive a significant profit on any potential resale. Born in Guinea Bissau, Fati made his professional debut with Barcelona at the age of 16. He played 123 matches for the club, scoring 29 goals, and won Spanish league titles in 2023 and 2025 and two Spanish Cup trophies. A Spanish international with 11 caps and two goals he played in the 2022 World Cup and was on the winning 2023 Nations League team. After a very complicated season hampered by numerous injury-related absences, with only 11 matches played and no goals scored, Fati will now attempt to relaunch his career in the Principality. He failed to excel during a loan spell in 2023-2024 at Brighton in the Premier League, with four goals in 27 matches in all competitions.

Cklamovski should explain his ‘internal struggles' statement, says Joehari
PETALING JAYA: National coach Peter Cklamovski has some explaining to do. Cklamovski not only made headlines after guiding Harimau Malaya to an emphatic 4-0 win over Vietnam in the 2027 Asian Cup third-round qualifiers on June 10, but for also making a statement on internal struggles plaguing the national team. And the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president Datuk Joehari Ayub now wants him to clear the air. What should have been a triumphant night quickly turned into a flashpoint when the Australian tactician used his post-match press conference to hint at behind-the-scenes issues. 'There are some things internal, maybe a bit of betrayal, some politics, some obstacles we are confronting on a daily basis,' said Cklamovski. 'If we didn't beat Vietnam, it could have turned ugly. They would've come after us, after TMJ (Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim), after me. Suddenly, I'd be the bad coach. The players would've been targeted too, all over a result.' When asked to comment, Joehari held firm, urging the coach to provide further clarification. 'You'll have to ask Peter himself,' said Joehari. 'From FAM's side, we're doing everything we can to support Harimau Malaya. 'That much I'm certain of. What he said could be speculative. He should be the one to explain.' The post-match controversy didn't stop there. Questions have also emerged over the eligibility of several mixed heritage players recently called up to the national team, namely Argentinian-born centreback Facundo Garces, Spanish-born defender Jon Irazabal, Argentinian-born winger Imanol Machuca, Brazilian-born playmaker Jose Figueiredo, and Argentinian-born striker Rodrigo Holgado. Online chatter cast doubts on their Malaysian lineage but Joehari quickly shut down the speculation. 'Every one of these players were thoroughly vetted by FIFA. That's not a body you can take lightly,' he said. 'If we were wrong, it would be a serious offence. But they were cleared by the world body and that was enough for FAM.' Despite the off-field noise, Malaysia's strong showing against Vietnam has put them in a solid position heading into the final phase of qualifiers. Still, all eyes will be on Cklamovski, not just for results, but for how he handles the alleged internal storm.
