Takht Patna Sahib declares Sukhbir Badal ‘tankhaiya': Accused of ignoring summons; role in religious row
NEW DELHI: Takht Sri Patna Sahib, one of the five main Sikh religious seats, has declared
Shiromani Akali Dal
president
Sukhbir Singh Badal
a 'tankhaiya'. The term refers to someone found guilty of religious wrongdoing.
The decision was announced by Jathedar and head granthi Giani Baldev Singh in Patna on Saturday.
"Sukhbir Singh Badal is declared 'tankhaiya' for being found guilty of ignoring the orders of the 'Panj Pyare Singh Sahibs' of Takht Sri Patna Sahib," the directive said.
According to Takht Patna Sahib's directive, Badal was a conspirator in the recent conflict involving different Sikh religious authorities. He was summoned three times but did not appear.
The directive stated that his absence clearly pointed to his involvement in the controversy.
The dispute began on May 21, when the Akal Takht barred Takht Patna Sahib Jathedar Giani Baldev Singh and another granthi from performing their religious duties. Takht Patna Sahib responded by declaring the Akal Takht Jathedar and Takht Damdama Sahib Jathedar 'tankhaiya', and also summoned Badal for his alleged role in the matter.

Reacting to this, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami criticised the decision to declare Badal 'tankhaiya'. He said it was beyond the jurisdiction of Takht Patna Sahib and could create confusion within the Sikh community.
Dhami stressed that while Takht Patna Sahib is highly respected, only the Akal Takht has the authority to decide on issues concerning the wider Sikh community.
He warned that undermining the Akal Takht could cause serious damage to Sikh traditions and unity.
He called for resolution through mutual dialogue and said the Sikh community's energy should be directed towards collective growth and the promotion of Sikh values, not internal disputes.
Badal was earlier declared 'tankhaiya' by the Akal Takht in Amritsar in August last year, and later in December was given religious punishment for mistakes linked to the Akali Dal government's rule in Punjab from 2007 to 2017.

‘Not an iota of evidence': former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar claims innocence in 2 cases linked to 1984 riots
Former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar told a Delhi court on Monday that he was innocent and was being implicated falsely in two cases in which two men were allegedly killed and another person was set ablaze during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. 'I was not present at the spot… The investigating agency did not conduct a fair Investigation. The aim was to implicate by introducing fresh and unsubstantiated allegations,' his counsel told Special Judge Dig Vinay Singh of the Rouse Avenue court. 'Initially, I wasn't even named by any of the witnesses. Decades later, I was named. The case against me is false and politically motivated.' The First Information Reports (FIRs) in this connection were filed in February 2015 by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) based on complaints of violence in Janakpuri and Vikaspuri. In Janakpuri, Sohan Singh and his son-in-law Avtar Singh were killed on November 1, 1984, while in Vikaspuri, Gurcharan Singh was allegedly set ablaze and sustained severe burns, remaining bed ridden for three decades. In August 2023, a Delhi court dropped the charges of murder and criminal conspiracy in both cases but charged Kumar with the other offences in the chargesheet, including rioting with deadly weapons, promoting enmity between different groups, and attempting to commit culpable homicide. 'I couldn't even have dreamt of committing this act. There is not even an iota of evidence against me,' he said, adding that he had organised blood donation camps and peace marches to bring harmony during the riots. Arguing through advocates Anil Kumar Sharma, Anuj Sharma and Apoorav Kumar Sharma, Kumar stated before the court: 'My lie detector test was conducted. I voluntarily participated to prove my innocence.' Sajjan Kumar is currently lodged in Tihar jail after the Delhi High Court sentenced him to life imprisonment in 2018 in a case related to the killing of five Sikhs at Raj Nagar Part I in Palam Colony on November 1-2, 1984, and the burning down of a gurdwara in Raj Nagar Part II. On August 30 last year, a Delhi court ordered framing of charges against Kumar in a case related to the killing of three Sikhs during the riots near Pul Bangash Gurdwara.

London police chief calls for 'mega' forces to cut costs
London Metropolitan Police commissioner Mark Rowley (Image:@metpoliceuk) The commissioner of London's Metropolitan Police Mark Rowley on Sunday called for major reforms to the United Kingdom's policing model, saying it "hasn't been fit for purpose for at least two decades. " The call comes amid falling public confidence in law enforcement in Britain and as police forces struggle to overcome years of austerity. What did Mark Rowley say? Writing in The Sunday Times, Rowley called for the 43 police forces in England and Wales to be shrunk into 12-15 regional forces. The Met chief said some of the forces were "too small to operate," while governance, leadership and support functions had become "ever more expensive." Rowley complained that investment in new technologies to aid law enforcement had been "politically deprioritized" in favour of maintaining a high number of police officers, which he said made it harder to keep up with modern criminals. "It [That policy] hinders the effective confrontation of today's threats and stops us fully reaping the benefits of technology," Rowley added. The Met chief said larger regional forces would make better use of limited funding, required due to the state of Britain's public finances. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Gold Is Surging in 2025 — Smart Traders Are Already In IC Markets Learn More Undo Rowley also called for the creation of a national policing body and better use of police staff, including more specialist support. Unlike Germany and France, the UK doesn't have a national police agency, although the national crime agency (NCA), which has responsibility for tackling serious and organized crime, does operate UK-wide. England and Wales have 43 police forces, including London's metropolitan police and greater manchester police, while Scotland and Northern Ireland each have their own national police forces. UK police forces underfunded and understaffed The UK's police forces remained weakened by a decade of austerity following the 2008/9 financial crisis. Police funding was cut by almost a fifth nationally and police officer numbers were cut by 20,000. Although this number has since been restored, several police forces remain financially strained due to years of underinvestment. The national police chief's council warned last year that police forces were facing a £3.2 billion (€3.7 billion, $4.4 billion) funding shortfall at a time of rising operational costs. Despite the UK government promising to hike police funding by 2.3 percent above inflation each year in a recent spending review, police insiders believe the extra cash will plug gaps rather than fund new initiatives. Organized crime, knife crime a major issue The police funding crisis comes as the UK faces an increased threat from organized crime, including drug and human trafficking, immigration offenses and cyberattacks. Outdated police intelligence infrastructure means that UK police forces often struggle with the scale and sophistication of these crime networks, according to police leaders and government reports. Other worsening public safety issues are: knife crime, particularly among young people, often fueled by drug dealing, as well as the exploitation of children and other vulnerable individuals by drug gangs to sell narcotics. The government of prime minister Keir Starmer has also made violence against women and girls, including domestic abuse, sexual offenses, and stalking, a major police priority. However, public trust in policing is at historic lows due to the underfunding, along with high-profile scandals, such as racism, misogyny, and misconduct within police forces. In the most fwell-known recent case, Sarah Everard, a 33-year-old London woman, was kidnapped, raped, and murdered in March 2021 by a serving Metropolitan Police officer, who abused his authority to deceive her.
