Down power to victory over lethargic hosts Clare

RTÉ News18-05-2025
Down made a sensational return to the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship in Zimmer Biomet Páirc Chiosóg when brushing aside the challenge of hosts Clare in front of just 1,556.
Soaring to last year's Tailteann Cup honours, Conor Laverty's side clearly carried that momentum to Ennis as they physically bullied the home side into submission long before the final whistle.
Indeed, with the aid of the conditions, the Ulster side effectively had the job done by half-time as timely goals from John McGeough and Daniel Guinness were accentuated by two-point braces for Pat Havern and Danny Magill to soar unassailably 2-17 to 1-06 clear by the break.
With nothing to lose, Clare did finally bounce off the ropes in the third quarter but a five-point blitz from Mark McInerney could only lessened the arrears to ten at 2-20 to 1-13 by the three-quarters mark.
That home rally only seemed to anger the visitors though as with eight minutes, Down had stretched the gap to 17, highlighted by a well-worked goal from substitute Caolan Mooney.
The goal of the game unquestionably came in the opening half though as after John McGeough had ignited Down's challenge with a flicked major from close range in only the sixth minute, the visitors would complete the half with an even better strike.
It stemmed from a Clare error that was intercepted by midfielder Daniel Guinness to pick up possession in his own half and burst forward, playing a one-two with Odhran Murdock before striking to the left corner of Eamon Tubridy's net at 2-13 to 0-05.
A motivated Clare did pull back an equally eye-catching goal a minute later when Brian McNamara, Eoin Cleary, Mark McInerney and Alan Sweeney combined to play in Aaron Griffin to finish. However, it would be cancelled out by Pat Havern's three point haul including his 19th two-pointer of 2025 to ease 14 in front by half-time.
Despite the wind to come, there would be no reprieve of any real note for Peter Keane's side who now face an arduous journey of their own to Monaghan in a fortnight's time while Down have a potential group decider to come with neighbours Louth in Newry.

Sharlene Mawdsley steps out with All-Ireland winning partner at Tipp homecoming

Tipperary celebrated their All-Ireland win in style at Semple Stadium this evening as over 40,000 supporters turned up to cheer on their heroes at the homecoming. It was a very busy day for the men in blue in gold, a day which started with a visit to Crumlin Hospital as Liam MacCarthy was introduced to some brave little Tipp fans. The team then made the journey back home in the evening and rocked up to Semple Stadium at around 8.15pm following an evening of entertainment which included a performance from Una Healy. On stage, the team soaked in the adulation from the fans as they celebrated their win with friends and family. Adding star power to the occasion was Sharlene Mawdsley. The Tipperary native and Olympian appeared on stage with her partner, Tipp defender Mikey Breen, and the pair were captured in a lovely photograph showing the two of them holding the Liam MacCarthy Cup. For Sharlene, Sunday's win would have been a poignant one as her father passed away suddenly at the beginning of June. Mawdsley and Breen have formed something of a sporting power couple in recent times, with the sprinter going 'Instagram official' with the Tipp defender at the beginning of the Summer. Yesterday, Mawdsley took to Instagram in the wake of Tipp's win, sharing a photo of herself with Breen on the Croke Park pitch along with the caption "Proud of you every day, but that little bit prouder today."

Meet the new Shamrock Rovers striker who is a Tailteann Cup winner with Down

He is a Tailteann Cup winner with Down, but it's not his Gaelic football career that is on an upward curve. John McGovern has committed his future to the 11-a-side game and after a first start for his new club Shamrock Rovers he now has his eye on a European debut. McGovern arrived at the Hoops after an impressive campaign with Dungannon Swifts last year, when he scored 14 goals in 29 appearances. He could have signed for Rovers last January, but was determined to finish his Business and Information Technology studies in Queens University. A sporting all-rounder, with Collingwood Cup credentials too, he will travel to Gibraltar with the rest of Stephen Bradley's squad tomorrow ahead of Thursday's Europa Conference League clash. 'For me, whenever I was joining, it was the chance of European football as well, that there would be European football there as well,' he said of his decision to move to Rovers. 'So it's an exciting venture for me, playing in Europe for the first time.' But for a controversial red card, McGovern could have been heading back up north this week to face Cliftonville in Europe. Instead, it's their conquerors St Joseph's. 'Whenever you go into Europe it won't be easy or smooth sailing. 'Rovers have shown down the years that they deserve to be in Europe, they have worked hard and done well, that's why we are here.' A former underage international with Northern Ireland, McGovern could easily have opted to continue playing Gaelic football for Ballyholland GAC and Down. 'I balanced both sports from the age of five, I went back and always wanted to play for Down. 'Things were not going too well with Newry City at the time I was there, so I went back and wanted to keep fit and give it a crack at playing Gaelic. 'I went for six months and we won a Tailteann but I had to dedicate the final year to playing for Dungannon and Newry, and ended up here. 'Putting that focus on playing soccer has paid off.' While Rovers had come in for McGovern last winter, he also had contact from clubs across the water. An opportunity to play for the Hoops, he says, was too good to turn down. 'That was my final year in university so it was about getting a full season under my belt playing Premiership football and getting my university degree done, then exploring options,' he explained. 'So throughout the year I dedicated myself to playing for Dungannon and then my university. 'Stephen Bradley contacted me in January and tried to bring me in, the timing wasn't right then but I said I'd be hugely interested. 'Rovers are the biggest club in Ireland. You could go across the water, clubs in Scotland and lower league clubs in England were interested, but you look at the success Rovers have had since they were founded, league titles, FAI Cups and Europe most years, that was an incentive for me. 'I want to get better playing with better players at a bigger club so it was a good step for me so playing LOI was something I wanted to do.' Tipperary's All-Ireland heroes bring Liam MacCarthy Cup to Crumlin hospital

Tipperary's All-Ireland winning stars took the Liam MacCarthy Cup to Crumlin hospital today. The men in blue and gold were awesome in the second-half on Sunday, blowing Cork away to win their first All-Ireland title since 2019. Today, Tipp took the title to Crumlin hospital to celebrate their win with some brave little supporters. And the party continued this evening as Semple Stadium hosted a fabulous homecoming, with a reported 45,000 supporters turning out to welcome their stars home. One man who should have been a part of the celebrations is the late great Dillon Quirke, who passed away in 2022 during a club game. Speaking about Dillon, Tipp manager Liam Cahill said: 'Like today, I got a text from Dan, his dad, coming up the road to wish me luck. And I just said that Dillon will be on all our shoulders today, regardless of what happens in the result. 'And, you know, he should be with us today. But the legacy he's leaving and the work that he's doing to save lives across Ireland at the moment through his name and the foundation is just incredible. 'And today I never flinched at any stage on the line. Once he was across my chest, I knew that we would be battling right to the end. And I'm just so proud to have had an input into his life for the short number of years he was with us.'
