U.S. men's hockey team wins first standalone world championship since 1933
Tage Thompson scored the golden goal to give the U.S. its first major tournament title since the 1996 World Cup. Its last Olympic title came in 1980 with the Miracle on Ice.
Goalie Jeremy Swayman got the shutout.

For a time, the Olympics also counted as world championships, so the U.S.' Olympic medals in 1952 (silver), 1956 (silver) and 1960 (gold) are also world championship medals.
The U.S. was eliminated from worlds in the quarterfinals last year. The Americans were fourth at worlds in 2022 and 2023 and made the semifinals 13 times since the IIHF reinstituted a bracketed playoff round in 1992. They lost 12 semifinals in a row before beating Sweden in Stockholm on Saturday.
The U.S. team at these worlds featured two players from last February's 4 Nations Face-Off: Swayman and defenseman Zach Werenski, who led all players at 4 Nations with six points.
Many top NHL players miss worlds because the tournament takes place during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Others choose to rest after the NHL season.
The U.S. head coach at worlds is the San Jose Sharks' Ryan Warsofsky.
The U.S. has already qualified for the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics, where NHL players are expected to participate for the first time since the 2014 Sochi Games.
The U.S. head coach for the Olympics is the New York Rangers' Mike Sullivan.

Winnipeg Jets 2025-26 Betting Outlook
Exploring betting options for the Jets ahead of the 2025-26 season. The 2025-26 NHL season draws closer and closer with sportsbooks starting to roll out seasonal bets that fans can ride for a majority of the season. These kind of bets are known as futures and can be something like if a certain player will win an award like the Hart or if a team like the Red Wings will make the playoffs. There's several betting options for the Jets early on that fans may want to look at. We can further explore what's needed to make the bet hit and hopefully win fans some extra cash if they feel confident. Could Jacob Trouba Return to Winnipeg? Anaheim's Jacob Trouba enters the final-year of his deal and could return to the team that drafted him. First-Time Stanley Cup Winner (+550 - $10 Bet Wins $55 Profit, $65 Total) The Jets are on the verge of being a legitimate Stanley Cup contender with the difficulty of their division getting in their way. They routinely have to go against the top teams in the Conference every postseason and haven't caught a break yet. It may finally come in 2026 as they are regrouped with some subtle upgrades in certain places like Jonathan Toews and could give them their best chance yet. They'll likely need a couple bounces their way like injuries to star players and other series around them going longer than expected to wear down the West. Winnipeg has had a Conference Finals contenders for several years now just haven't had the road map to make it but you never know what can happen as there's new teams that break out and emerge in the final four teams like Carolina last season. It's only a matter of time for the Jets to get their chance and the hope is they take advantage. The best part about this bet is we also don't need just Winnipeg to win the Cup, we also get future bets on all the teams that have never won the cup before in the San Jose Sharks, Seattle Kraken, Nashville Predators, Columbus Blue Jackets, Vancouver Canucks, Minnesota Wild, Winnipeg Jets, Ottawa Senators, Buffalo Sabres, and the newly relocated Utah Mammoth. Jets to Make the Playoffs (-220 - $10 Bet Wins $4.55 Profit, $14.55 Total) The Jets are coming off a President's trophy win last season but the sportsbooks aren't treating Winnipeg like contenders once again as they are a step removed from being even money to make the postseason. They did lose key forwards in Nikolaj Ehlers and Mason Appleton but they did regroup with a couple meaningful adds in their place and will likely look like the same team next season. To put it into context, sportsbooks believe the New Jersey Devils have a better chance of making it to the postseason after not making it last season. The disrespect is mild but there as the Jets will have an easier strength of schedule this upcoming season compared to the Avalanche and Stars, who will be their main competition to win the Central Division. This bet doesn't necessarily work on its own as the profits for it aren't big but this could be used as a solid addition to a futures parlay if you wanted to take the Jets to make the playoffs with something else like the Toronto Blue Jays to make the playoffs in baseball or the Kansas City Chiefs to win the Super Bowl in football. You could also just put more money on this bet and earn back a better payout as a $100 bet pays back $45 profit. Red Wings Eye Sabres' Alex Tuch as Potential Top-Six Upgrade
Red Wings could explore a trade for Sabres winger Alex Tuch, who is reportedly on the trade block. The 2026 NHL Free Agent class has the potential to be the biggest in league history with some of the biggest names up for grabs. Barring a similar event to this year where all the top players re-sign, we could see a major shake up within the league. Most hockey fans look to biggest names like Connor McDavid, Jack Eichel and Artemi Panarin among others on the block and salivate at the idea of their team nabbing one of the league's best. For Detroit fans, there's a name to look out for in the bunch and could be dealt early on into the season with Buffalo's Alex Tuch. The 29-year-old Syracuse native is entering the final year of a seven-year deal with a very friendly $4.75 million cap hit per season for a winger that has produced 94 goals with 111 assists for 205 points over the last three seasons. Tuch has been rumored to be on the trade block for some time now and Detroit is looking to add a top six winger. Bookmark The Hockey News Detroit Red Wings team site to stay connected to the latest news, game-day coverage, and player features. His recent numbers have him ahead of names like Lucas Raymond, Alex DeBrincat and Zach Hyman. Detroit bench boss Todd McLellan and the rest of the coaching staff would need to juggle around the lineup as Tuch is a right-hand shot that wouldn't be able to take over the vacant left wing spot on the top line but could slide into the second line centre spot while Marco Kasper moves up to left wing. Tuch was drafted 18th overall back in the 2014 NHL Draft by the Minnesota Wild. He was later dealt to the Vegas Golden Knights as part of an agreement that they would select Erik Haula during the building of their team in the 2017 expansion draft. He would go on to have four solid years with Vegas, where he would produce 30-50 points and would also contribute in four different playoff runs. Detroit Red Wings 2025-26 Betting Outlook Exploring betting options for the Red Wings ahead of the 2025-26 season. The Buffalo Sabres, while in the basement of the league at the time, had a rising star that wanted out in Jack Eichel. He would go on to be traded to the Golden Knights with Tuch being one of the focal points of the return package to Buffalo. Tuch was able to return to the NHL team he grew up closest to and was successful throughout his youth in the early 2000s. During his first full season in Buffalo, he would score 36 goals along with 43 assists for just short of 80 points through 74 games. He would certainly be a difference-making player when put in the right situation and that could be in Detroit. He would get a meaningful role on a rising team with significantly better talent around him and could see top line power play minutes, making his upside close to his career-best year at 80 points. Tuch and the Sabres were recently involved in contract talks but if things go south, the Red Wings may be able to give Buffalo and offer that'll persuade them to deal him and start fresh with more NHL talent. This kind of deal would be rare as it would be inter-divisional but if it does happen it'll likely be at the end of the season in free agency or a deal could involved some of Detroit's young talent that are on the verge of making the jump to the NHL in Carter Mazur, Michael Rasmussen or one of their current main roster players like Jonatan Berggren or Elmer Soderblom. Canada's Gabriela Dabrowski playing with new perspective since cancer diagnosis
MONTREAL - Winning still feels great for Gabriela Dabrowski, but it's not the be-all and end-all like it used to be. Ever since her battle with cancer last year, swinging a tennis racket has taken on a new meaning. 'Tennis really feels like it's not the No. 1 thing in life anymore,' Dabrowski said. 'If it was taken away from me tomorrow? Yeah, I would be sad. But if I'm healthy, then to me, that's all that really matters. 'There are bigger problems in life than winning a tennis match.' Last December, the 33-year-old doubles star from Ottawa revealed months after the fact that she had undergone two surgeries to treat breast cancer following a diagnosis in April. With only a few close friends and family aware of her fight, Dabrowski captured a mixed doubles bronze medal for Canada alongside Felix Auger-Aliassime at last summer's Paris Olympics and claimed the WTA Finals title with her longtime partner, Erin Routliffe. When she returned from her surgeries, every serve and volley felt like a bonus. 'Everything was like, 'Wow, this is such a different feel than what I've had in the past, which was like, 'Don't waste any potential you have, maximize the sport, do the best you can,'' Dabrowski said in a video interview from Ottawa, where she received the key to the city Thursday. 'Now I'm doing the best I can because I want to, not because I have to, and that was a huge shift for me. 'Even though losses hurt, they definitely don't hurt as much as before, which is nice. And wins still feel great, and being able to share them with the people around me is the best feeling, because we have been through a lot. I know I went through a lot, but they went through a lot, too.' Dabrowski and Routliffe, of New Zealand, won the 2023 US Open and reached last year's Wimbledon final. They'll be among the top seeds in the National Bank Open's women's doubles tournament, beginning Sunday in Montreal, marking the No. 8-ranked Dabrowski's first action on home soil since going public with her story. Dabrowski still manages side effects from radiation, surgery and long-term hormone therapy, but credits her medical team for keeping her in top shape with how she eats, sleeps, trains and recovers. Planning ahead to better recuperate from jet lag, which 'hits me harder than it used to,' is another adjustment she's making on the gruelling, travel-heavy circuit. This season has been especially tough because Dabrowski has struggled with a rib injury since February, an ailment that has forced her off the court more than the cancer diagnosis a year ago. She and Routliffe won the Stuttgart Open in April, but Dabrowski later withdrew from several tournaments, including the French Open in May, before returning to action in time for Wimbledon. The second-seeded pair 'did better than expected' under the circumstances, losing to eventual champions Elise Mertens and Veronika Kudermetova in a tight quarterfinal match. 'I'm proud of my last couple of months, considering what I went through,' said Dabrowski, who said she's playing at roughly 80 per cent capacity. 'Really trying to balance the healing component with continuing to increase volume in the gym and on the court, but without doing too much to where I might impede that last sort of stage of healing. 'I feel like even though I'm probably not at my most prepared going into National Bank Open, I still have a week to get more training in the tank, and then maybe some practice matches with Erin … she'll be match fit and she can carry me. It's fine.' REUNITING WITH FELIX? Dabrowski is hoping to team up with Auger-Aliassime in the US Open mixed doubles tournament in August, although she's not certain she'll get the chance. They are among 25 teams on the entry list, though only 16 will play. Most of the top stars in tennis — including Aryna Sabalenka, Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner — have also entered teams into the revamped tournament, which will take place before singles action and feature a US$1-million prize. The eight teams with the best combined singles rankings will automatically qualify, and the USTA will select the next eight duos, meaning some doubles specialists, like Dabrowski, could be shut out of the doubles event. 'That lends itself to a definition of exhibition,' Dabrowski said of the format. 'I love that they've obviously increased prize money and all that, I think that's amazing. But at the same time, if you don't have any top doubles players in that draw, I don't think that it should be called a mixed doubles championship and you should win a Grand Slam trophy winning that event.' This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 25, 2025.
