Chinese pop music's 'deeply local' Canadian story shines in Vancouver exhibition

A new exhibition on Cantopop and Mandopop music in Vancouver is a Canadian story, says curator Melissa Karmen Lee.
The Dream Factory exhibit, which opened on May 28 at the Chinese Canadian Museum, pays tribute to the golden age of Chinese pop music "through the lens of Chinese Canadian identity, migration and memory."
Its stories are anything but foreign, said Lee, who is also the museum's chief executive.
"It is a deeply local story about how many of these Cantopop stars [and] Mandopop stars made Vancouver their home. They lived here, they worked here, they grew up here," she said.
"They all deeply considered Canada a part of their identity, and we're so pleased to feature that in this exhibition."
Cantopop and Mandopop refer to Chinese-language pop music in the two most widely spoken tongues in the community, Cantonese and Mandarin.
The exhibit, running through May 2026, features a collection of music from the genres between 1980 and 2000, when stars such as Leslie Cheung and Anita Mui wowed fans globally.
But Lee said many outside the community didn't realize that such giant stars were living among them in Canada.
Lee pointed out that Cheung — a singer and actor who became known to Western audiences by starring in movies including Farewell My Concubine and Happy Together — lived in Vancouver in the early 1990s.
A park bench that honours Cheung in the city's Stanley Park is a pilgrimage site for fans of the star, who died by suicide in 2003.
Lee said singer and actress Sally Yeh grew up in Victoria before reaching stardom.
The Cantopop and Mandopop genres are intrinsically connected to Canada's large Chinese communities, especially in neighbourhoods in Metro Vancouver and Toronto where their songs were ubiquitous at Chinese malls, restaurants and karaoke bars.
Vancouver native Stephanie Kong, who designed a wedding dress at the exhibit that was inspired by Mui's 2003 farewell performance, said Cantopop music saturated many of her childhood memories.
"Growing up here in Canada, that was definitely a part of my childhood," Kong said. "Going to Parker Place [a mall in Richmond, B.C.] and waiting while my parents were in those music stores buying LaserDiscs, and I would be like, 'What's taking so long?'
"Because I didn't quite understand it … So it's funny that it comes kind of full circle, coming as an adult and getting a new appreciation for what I've always kind of — for the lack of a better word — just dismissed when I was a kid."
In addition to costumes inspired by Cantopop and Mandopop in the exhibition's main room, there's a large screen blaring hit songs, a separate room featuring artwork using LaserDiscs, a stage set up for karaoke and listening stations for popular songs.
On one wall, original sheet music for famous Cantonese movies from Hong Kong composer Joseph Koo are displayed. Koo lived in Richmond before his death in 2023.
'A preservation of culture'
Lee said Cantopop culture seeped deep into many parts of Canada. She said Cheung's 1986 song Monica was anecdotally regarded as responsible for a large number of Chinese Canadian girls bearing the name.
"They listened to Cantopop in Vancouver, in Toronto," Lee said of immigrant waves to Canada. "They made this very Asian music part of this global Chinese diaspora community.
"So, part of the popularity of Cantopop and Mandopop across the globe was because of these overseas Chinese communities that made it really great.
"Immigrants that came in the '60s and the '70s, they brought over their own culture and … made it a uniquely Canadian experience. And so, it's a preservation of culture, but it's also an evolution of something that is Asian into Asian Canadian."

'It was about keeping something going, and creating familiarity,' Busby said. 'And about maintaining dignity through the process of his decline.' She began by painting the walls of his room in a care home the same white as their home. Then, when he moved to a new facility, she began a text-painting on the wall of his bathroom that read 'I Wonder,' a phrase that he often repeated. After Kennedy passed away, she began working on what would become I Wonder: Art + Care + Dementia. I Wonder: Art + Care + Dementia is among the books that will be on display at this year's Vancouver Art Book Fair (VABF). The books range from photocopied 'zines to DIY zines to elaborately bound museum catalogues. Along with a chance to peruse and purchase these volumes, visitors can engage directly with the artists, editors, and publishers behind the books. 'I think what's exciting about the fair is that, though the work is grounded in visual art, that extends many places,' said Jonathan Middleton, co-manager of VABF. 'The interests of a large museum and someone photocopying a zine aren't always the same. But there's a lot of crossover there, too.' The fair features over 100 local and international exhibitors. Among these are 29 new participants, including Odd One Out, Hong Kong's first illustration, graphic arts, and printmaking gallery; Now Place, a San Francisco-based art space and independent publisher that empowers emerging artists from the Asian diaspora; and Nothing New Projects, an independent risograph print and publishing studio based in Ottawa. Vancouver-based artists launching new publications include Hazel Meyer, whose A Queer History of Joyce Wieland is a culmination of the author's years-long research into the legacy of the pioneering Canadian artist. 'Content-wise, on one end of the scale you'll find exhibition catalogues or monographs or anthologies of more theoretical writing about art, maybe mixed with illustration,' Middleton said. 'And on the other side of the equation there are artists who are expressing their ideas and personal experiences and politics. The zine movement, for example, has a very long history and connection to activism. And there is a long history of artists using the book as a medium, as they might use canvas or clay or video.' Middleton credits the New York Art Book Fair, which was first held in 2006, with launching 'this global movement.' The Vancouver Art Book Fair, the first of its kind in Canada, launched in 2012 — two years before the closing of Oscar's Art Books, an emporium of visual delights missed by many longtime Vancouverites, including Middleton. 'I was hired there as a student, and my job was to put their entire stock into inventory. There were thousands and thousands of books. That was a very unglorious way to learn about art books.' Busby says that for her, an art book is one in which every aspect of the design and contents add to the final product. 'For example, I thought very seriously about the cover of I Wonder: Art + Care + Dementia. It's a bit of a puzzle. It's a photo of green tape on the wall. You have to get into the book to understand what it is. However, I'm very big on giving clues. I don't want people to look at the work and go, 'What the heck is this?''

HRZN Fest coming to 'very underutilized space' in city's west end, organizer says Tucked away at the eastern edge of Springbank Park, the Guy Lombardo Pavilion isn't exactly top-of-mind when Londoners think of an outdoor music venue. Joel Richer aims to change that with HRZN Fest, a new two-day festival of music and food set to happen Aug. 8 and 9. "We felt there was an opportunity to bring something new to the festival market that Londoners hadn't seen before," he said. "That beach club vibe with great music, great food with a Mediterranean feel to it. It's a very underutilized space in the city." Richer is co-owner of 4est Brewery and also owns Bulles et Bières, which sets up mobile bars at events. In working at various festivals and events over the years, he felt London could use a new outdoor music festival in the city's west end. Guy Lombardo Pavilion, an open-air covered patio almost 5,000 square feet in size, struck him as the perfection location. The pavilion is part of Springbank Park but with vehicle access off Wonderland Road, not the park's main entrance off Commissioner's Road West. "It's a fantastic venue to put something on like this," said Richer. He said the visitor experience at HRZN (pronounced "Horizon") will be unique, with DJs on both nights, multiple drink stations and light installations he promises will be "very Instagrammable." There will be a cocktail bar, beer garden and a wine and cheese station. And while entrance to the event is free, there will also be private cabanas with bottle service at an extra charge. Although alcohol will be served, it's an all-ages event. Everyone will have to show ID upon entry and anyone 19 and older will get a bracelet allowing them to buy alcohol. On both nights, the event will wind up at 11 p.m. with a 4 p.m. start time on the first day and a noon start the second day. Parking at Guy Lombardo Pavilion is limited. Richer encourages everyone who can to avoid bringing their vehicle. "There's a big need and want for something like this," said Richer. "If it goes well we see this as a recurring event." Richer is also looking into using the Lombardo Pavilion for an Oktoberfest event in the fall, complete with picnic tables and Bavarian food and beer.
